The Romulans were all once Vulcans who decided to go their own way when the majority of the people decided to try to suppress their emotions. Vulcan emotions (as seen in the TNG episode "Sarek") are extremly powerful, thus the decision to supress them. Romulans are very passionate, and, one would say, have stronger feelings than humans, but there emotions are nowere near as strong as those of the Vulcans.
Did the Romulans eventually try to supress at least some of their emotions, or are theirs just not as strong after that long a seperation? (c.2000 years I beleive)
Also, do the Romulans not have telepathic powers like the Vulcans? Or do they just not use them?

It's not really a theory, romulans really were originally Vulcans (see TNG "Unification" 1&2 for one example). Perhaps the Romulans quit using their telepathic powers because it reminded them of their past on Vulcan. After a long time, perhaps the powers faded from disuse.

Or at least they lack the training and tradition to access those powers. Now that would be scary if they found them again and used them to go on the offensive, wouldn't it?

Romulans look a bit like Klingons I think, both aggresive species weren't they alies for a long time?

I don't think it was a long time, but for a while they were. It was between TOS and TNG I think, because of the changes in each races technology that we see from the different episodes. I don't think it was long enough for them to start looking like each other.
But a curious point. Their ribosomes are closer to Klingons than Vulcans. I wonder if their alliance with the Klingons had something to do with this?

Remember, this thread is not just about Romulans. Feel free to start new discussions.

Do you think they would want, for whatever reason, to genetically engineer themselves? Especially if they saw their Vulcan heritage as a weakness, they might not have many compunctions about doing it. For instance, they might want to do stuff like eliminate the whole disruptive pon farr cycle. After all, if you're going to go off and conquer worlds, the captain isn't going to just turn around the ship for one person (not in THAT mindset, I mean--I do know Kirk did exactly that).

I don't know. I suppose they might have, but we can't always use genetic engineering as an escape. However, I can see on other explanation for the differences between the two races. But would Genetic engineering rid them of their emotions and telepathic abilities?

I don't think it will, Vulcans do have emotions but they meditate to suppress them.

I ahve been looking on startrek.com, and found a very interesting theory. Their were two different species on Vulcan. These races were constantly at war with each other, both being extremly aggresive. But when one side (the Vulcans) decided to change their way of life and become passive, the other found no honor in fighting an enemy that did not want to fight. So they left Vulcan in gigantic generational spacecraft, eventually settling on Romulas. After a few hundred years, the Romulans decided to conqure their neighboring planet remus.
As for the different foreheads seen on Romulans, it is my theory that when they left Vulcan, some of the Romulans had Vulcan spouses, who did not accept the teaching of Surak. I think the smooth forehead is a dominant trait, so it never got wiped out of the Romulans, but there were not enough Vulcans for the smooth head to become a dominant feature.

Interesting theory, this puts a whole new light on the case...
