This is a beginning study of a Cardassian character who will appear in a story I'm working on. Please note the name on this rough draft is no longer the one I'm working with...it's Calena now, not Kalena. The other characters mentioned are part of my story as well, not any characters you missed on DS9.
I scanned this straight out of my sketchbook. You'll also see my self-critique with the drawing. I am definitely aware of many of the problems this preliminary study has, but I'm hoping this is worth trying again. :)

I like it!! I really do. Very well done. Alot of artist's that are just beginning have a hard time with people's faces. This sketch has great attention to detail without going overboard and the angle is proportionally correct. Beginners also have a hard time getting the angles of faces too...I think you did a great job with this one.
I do have a suggestion however, when you draw features on the face...for example lips...less line work is better for lips. The shadows on lips are more than enough to capture realism if that's what your trying to achieve. Check out the lips on this portrait, just the upper shadow for the upper lip and the bottom shadow to indicate the bottom lip.
Overall great work!

Thanks a lot for the advice! I especially like how you provided an example--that was very nice of you. :)
Probably the final version will be a bit more detailed than that one, and there'll be more attention to getting the ridges correct.
By the way, would you care to see the original photo that inspired it? It was actually a lady posing for a magazine ad--that helped me a lot with the angle and proportion. :)

Yeah! that would be cool...reference is far more important than what people think. Taking your own pictures is the best...but that can be difficult.

OK then, here's the reference photo. Obviously very un-Cardassian. ;)

Besides, I give the Obsidian Order a bit more credit for intelligence than this. Calena's character isn't an agent, anyway.
