What do peeps play around here or own? Or own but don't play? Let's find out

In the last 6 yrs I've bought just a PS2 & only in the last 3 months Xbox 360. I think the 360 is the best console at this time.

I know Ste was one of the 1st people on here to get an Xbox, was it in December 2005??

At the moment I'm playing:

Xbox 360

Dark Sector
Call Of Duty 2
GTA 4
Virtua Tennis 3

PC

Football Manager 2009
CM 4 03/04
CM 01/02 (Updated to current season)

Alex H - March 28, 2009 08:41 PM (GMT)
I used to play games a lot but only tend to play games with other people these days, and that's not very often either. When I do play it's usually Smash Bros. Wii, Fifa 2009, Perfect Dark N64 and Mario Football Gamecube.

I do see some games and want to play them, like Zelda, Okami, Fable, stuff on the DS and others...

P.S. Why do you play three different football management games? I used to spend endless hours on CM 99/00 and then 00/01 back in the day...

A good question with a interesting answer.

I try to learn as much as I can through managing etc though as soon as I get the sack especially on (FM) I try to play another version in where I can succeed without getting the boot ;) ;) At the same time read tips/guides in how to do well.

Some people have kept CM 01/02 alive here:

I was always crap at this since buying it in October 2001 but do all I can do is try.

Pete - March 29, 2009 06:19 PM (GMT)
I started playing X-Com Enemy Unknown again a few months ago - an absolutely amazing game initially released around 1994. I'm now playing the sequel (Terror From the Deep).

I also own a Wii, mainly for Wii Sports, Resident Evil 4, and the light gun games (House of the Dead, Umbrella Chronicles, etc.)

I must admit, I'm not really into gaming nearly as much as I used to be. I bought a PS3 a few months ago but I use it to for Blu Ray rather than games.

Nick - March 29, 2009 07:19 PM (GMT)
I own a macbook and play nothing.

Apart from real golf with real people.

But that's probably sadder than playing games on a console.

Discuss. :D

Sweet G 24 - March 31, 2009 11:41 AM (GMT)
I like Golf, I do watch it when I can, I got into golf back in late 1993. I've never played it but I got a decent simulation on the PS2 'Real World Golf' you get a small club etc

Nah its not sad Nick, just miserable    ;)

No.

Miserable is living below the poverty line with no hope of moving above it. To call golf miserable is totally the wrong word.

"W*nker" I could accept. "M*ddle Cl*ss" I could go for. "Tw*t" even!

But not "miserable", G. Are you losing your touch?

Golf is just my escape, like the screen in front of you. But I have the wind in (what's left of) my hair, the sun on my back and a song in my heart when I hit each ball.

And I couldn't give a fcuk!

Sweet G 24 - April 1, 2009 06:17 PM (GMT)
I've had no touches to lose nor would I use vulgar language

Thought it was a friendly forum

Wow, I guess closes this topic off

Nick - April 1, 2009 06:48 PM (GMT)
Of course it's a friendly forum. I was describing how I feel when I play golf. I guess you've the same feeling when you have your xbox etc. I don't have an offensive bone in my body.

I do question the violent games that parents turn a blind eye to, though. They do affect young children, no doubt about it.

It's down to responsible parenting though, in the same way that it should be with films. Games often get singled out for some reason.

For my part I own a PS3 although I tend to find myself using it more for all the multimedia stuff than I actually do for games - having YouTube/ iPlayer and so on, on a full size TV, is very handy. Where games are concerned, I like the "pick up and play" stuff but I just haven't got the time to be good at anything too "in-depth". I like being outside too much. This is why I've got a PS3 I think - there's a load of the quick puzzle-y stuff, which I always like, and for that stuff it's better than the 360. I would get a 360 if I was a several-hours-a-day gamer but... that's not healthy.

There are "casual" gamers on here though, aren't there? What was that weird trampoline-y game a while back that everyone was competing on? I forget.

Jayem - April 4, 2009 08:51 AM (GMT)
I've never had any interest in the Wii, so for a while it was between the 360 and the PS3. I waited to see how the game catalogues panned out and ended up getting the 360 as a result. Actually, I got it as a present but that's neither here nor there since I was saving to get it myself before my parents and grandma decided to join forces and get it for my birthday.

Couldn't be happier with my choice, I've had it a year and a half now and things have gone very much the way of the 360 in terms of games I want - things like Rock Band (and Rock Band 2) having several months exclusivity on the Xbox before eventually coming out on other consoles. Also, downloadable content for all sorts of things is better or more available - the expansions for Fallout 3 are only coming out on PC and 360, no idea why the PS3 is getting screwed on that but I know I'd be hacked off if I'd not chosen the way I did.

So... as for what I'm playing, erm, look for yourselves. Also, this for non-360 stuff.

Also, just bought Lost Odyssey so I'll be giving that a bit of attention at some point. I left all my stuff at uni when I came home for Easter 'cos my lift had his car break down and I didn't fancy lugging a console and a TV on the train.

Oh, I've also got a Nintendo DS, but I never play it. Got it the day they came out because I wanted the updated Mario 64, but it turned out to be a nightmare to control so I abandoned it pretty quick. Had a few games for a while but ended up trading them in for money off 360 games. All I've got left is Pokemon Pearl but I got bored of that quite some time ago.

Over the years I've had all sorts of things: ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Sega Master System, NES, Mega Drive, Playstation, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Playstation 2, various Game Boy things, PSP... the list goes on. While I'm home without the 360, I'm playing on the PS2. Good to get back to the old Final Fantasy series.

...I'm a bit of a gamer. :P

That wasn't as interesting an answer as I was expecting after you said it would be an interesting answer. :P

Perhaps if you stuck to one game you'd get better at it? After getting sacked by Stoke and restarting, I got to about 2015 on 00/01 and won straight promotions to Division 1 (as it was then) from the Conference and later won the Premier League 5 or 6 times in a row with Rushden & Diamonds. I only won the Champions League once in that time as I often lost in the semi-finals. One of my players had been with me ever since he was 17 in the Conference after I signed him from Triestina in Italy, for every season he was with me he won player of the year! I was gutted when he went to Napoli at about age 33/34. Rushden & Diamonds were a good club to start with back then as they had a lot of money for a Conference club.

As for the player, he was called Lorenzo Tramarin. I did search for him years ago but didn't find many results, I've just Googled him again and now there are loads of results, including one on Facebook! I'm tempted to ask if he is/was a footballer. I think you can tell I used to play this game a lot... :P

My favourite game of all-time though is probably Terranigma on the SNES. An amazing adventure/RPG where you even had to furnish your own house. :D That was a novel idea at the time...

moopymoogle - April 7, 2009 09:07 PM (GMT)
i do not own a console, just a mac - and the only game i play is World of Warcraft

[a post killer, if ever there is one!]

erm, but i also like retro games. Like, er, Rogue [DOS] which was a game from 1984 in which you ran around in little ASCII character levels, errr, SIAM Railway Simulations (especially controlling Paddington station with signals...) - i think i better stop there, to be honest, as anything more will be worse than these!

oh dear.

BUT, despite never having owned a console, i still loved playing the original Wipeout (futuristic racing game) on the Playstation, and Perfect Dark on the N64 in multiplayer mode - and also any incarnation of Mario Kart. Wii-wise, Wii Music is hilarious (as you can record your own supposed performances and play multiple instruments really badly), as is trying to ski, ski-jump and do the hula-hoop-but-without-a-hula-hoop game. Woo!

I guess I am a casual gamer in ways, I do play maybe 2-4 times a week but not for long hours on the Xbox but on CM/FM in can be long. In the old days going back 20 yrs I would play a lot. Sometimes I could play games for 6/7hrs easily.

Games are much more advanced now then ever, they are deemed to be educational to a certain extent as it does test the mind in how to solve things in a lateral way. I studied Psychology at Uni & did my MSc in it also I briefly covered impact of gaming in adolescents & children. I concluded that parents need to enforce how they discipline their children into what games they buy for them, as you know all games now carry certificates but we know they play these games at friends houses.

GTA has caused much controversy around the globe particularly in the USA where the gameplay has influenced identical crimes inflicted on people, this of course is not what the game is about. GTA took 3 yrs to make at a cost of 2 million dollars but though the negative publicity it actually made more for the game.

The Wii is more of a fun/family console its not for serious game play, there are only a handful of games that have received a rating of 85% or more in reviews, very poor compared to the 360 & PS3.

I like that scorecard you got there Jayem, GTA needs some attention though I have a SNES but not that game Terranigma

I would agree in what you say Alex H, I sort of stick to one for awhile then hop skip & jump into another. I do try to learn & get all the tips & tactical advice possible but I’m my own worst enemy even with all my wealth I can’t get certain things right, the true test would be to start at a low club & work all way the to the top, I think I know how my summer is going.

Lorenzo Tramarin I did google him, a lot of hits, maybe you should send him a message & ask him, you never know……

I think one of the best games I spent a lot of time on was Flashback on the Megadrive, loved it.

Jayem - April 10, 2009 09:50 PM (GMT)
I, erm, sort of, a little bit, bought a Wii today.

I'm only playing a handful of 360 games at the moment, I need something to distract me from them for a little while so I don't get completely sick of 'em... and Argos had a good deal on the Wii so I thought I might as well since my student loan came in early.

It's... actually a lot more fun than I expected.

Sweet G 24 - April 30, 2009 12:13 PM (GMT)
The wii is a fun/entrainment system, it's good that the games are they way they are but I wouldn't get one unless they made the interactiveness of it more sophisticated.

They need stronger titles to do this, not may wii games score well in reviews. Only a handful get over 75%

I do like wii Tennis/bowling & boxing. I'd like to try wii sports 2

If you own a PS3, they have today added a new service called Vidzone, which is completely free and apparently has 10000 music videos to choose from to start with.

I didn't expect there to be any Silver Sun videos, but there are. Five in fact.

Other things you will find on this service: one Paul Steel video (the only one, I think) and 15 Ben Folds videos. This is good.

I just have to say anyone with a ps3 or 360 has to get ghostbusters. it's so much fun and a great follow up to the movies. Love it :)

Just downloaded the new "Tales Of Monkey Island" game on PC. Been playing through it a bit, it's brilliant. As funny as ever and a great continuation of the old games.

Anyone who likes a bit of old style point n' click adventuring with some quality humour should give it a shot - www.telltalegames.com

Will it work on a PC with a modest spec? I bought a new laptop last autumn.

Answered my own question on this one by giving the demo a go. Basically if I turn down all the graphics settings it works OK.

I used to really love the Monkey Island games - unlike most games that say they're funny, these ones genuinely are - so I've paid up.

Here's a song for 80s gamers:
www.last.fm/music/MJ%2BHibbett%2B%2526%2Bthe%2BValidators/_/Hey+Hey+16k?autostart
Lyrics: www.mjhibbett.net/songs/lyrics/heyhey16k.htm

'Tis a good one too. I played 8 of the games mentioned. :D

I downloaded the Monkey Island demo a week ago. If I get around to playing it, it'll probably be the first time I've played a game on my own all year. The Curse of Monkey Island was very funny. I loved Murray, which was also the name of my driving instructor around the time.

In edits, I just remembered I bought the 3D game that came after The Curse of... but I barely remember playing it.

Jayem - July 16, 2009 02:15 PM (GMT)
Haha, nice - I've had the MJ Hibbett song on my iPod for... erm... *checks iTunes* since New Year's Day, apparently. Makes me all nostalgic - I'm not necessarily old enough to have been a big gamer in the 80s but that didn't stop me playing the Spectrum right up until the mid-to-late 90s... and even later in emulator form.

Anyway, he did a Commodore 64 version too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL9c6scfSNk

I seriously need to get their CDs. Like, now. Just got paid more than I expected, so that's a plan.

So, gaming:

I just got back to playing Skate 2 yesterday, after a couple of months off. Also, I bought Halo 3 this week - never played it before, or indeed any of the series, but I decided it'd be a good idea 'cos I'm really bad at shooters and someone told me that it would be a good place to start practicing. My biggest addictions, Guitar Hero and Rock Band, have been put away for quite a while now - just not been in the mood to play them lately. Same with Fallout 3, which I started again to get the achievements for bad and neutral karma before quickly realising I couldn't be arsed.

As for the Wii... yeah, that got abandoned pretty quickly. About a week, actually. That said, I've dragged it out again a few times over the past couple of weeks because, for some inexplicable reason, I can get it connected to the internet in my new flat despite not being able to in my old flat just a couple of blocks away, so maybe it'll get a bit more play. I'll have it in the lounge when the rest of my flatmates move in, but for now I'm temporarily living with a few people I don't really know and they've got their TV and PS2 out there.

If you like the original Monkey Island, they've just released a remake of it called "Monkey Island: Special Edition".

It's the first game with nice shiny new redrawn graphics and with a full voice over added. It's cheap too, you can get it on Steam for £6.99 - has barely aged either, still great fun.

Hope they give the sequel the same treatment at some point.

You can get it on Xbox Live Arcade too and play it in nice HD Widescreen for any 360 ownwers.

I need to hurry up and finish the new one before the second monthly instalment comes out. I gather it takes about three hours.

I'm about to start playing Prototype ;)

The inevitable has finally happened... my Xbox has died. I'm sort of impressed that it lasted as long as it did - nearly two and a half years. Unless I've been lied to by the entire world, it should still be under warranty for this particular manner of failure so I'm gonna get onto Microsoft in the morning.

But still, sad faces. Well, more like eye-rolling and "FFS WHY NOWWWWW". But y'get the point.

EDIT: Sad faces have been slightly reduced by the realisation that it's a good excuse to dig out the Wii from under my bed (for the first time since September!) and finish the one game I've got left. I've also got my PS2, which might not work after being dropped and tripped over countless times these past few weeks... but if it does, I've got every Final Fantasy game from 1-12, excluding the third. That'll keep me busy for a while.

Alex H - February 3, 2010 10:19 PM (GMT)
It might be worth looking up the Sale of Goods act and returning your Xbox to the point of purchase. The Sale of Goods act states something should be fit for purpose for 'a reasonable amount of time' and it's the shop that sold it that's responsible.

Jayem - February 3, 2010 10:45 PM (GMT)
Luckily enough, I'm covered by Microsoft - it's the famous 'red ring of death' caused by poor manufacture (specifically, weak solder joints on the graphics card that melt and fall off when it heats up internally). At one point the failure rate was so high (various sources claim anywhere between 20-50%) that Microsoft were forced to extend the warranty from one to three years... and I'm a good few months inside that. Thankfully the newer models (which I should get as a replacement) have much better heatsinks and run at lower power, so the failure rate has dropped dramatically.

That said, I have actually got a three year warranty thing from the shop it was bought from. It'd definitely be a quicker way of getting back to business but it'd also require me to send back everything, whereas Microsoft only need the machine which means I keep the hard drive with all my saves and downloads.

Alex H - February 4, 2010 09:06 PM (GMT)
Oh aye, I gathered that. It's happened to everyone I know who has one. I told my bro' to take his to the shop (it was after about 2 years) and they exchanged it for a new one and changed the drive so he kept everything. They said they didn't have to exchange it, but they were just saying that of course...it's definitely quicker than sending it back to MS.
