Title: Neo Wave
Description: Silver Sun's Pinkerton?
arcadecoma - October 17, 2008 04:25 PM (GMT)
Neo Wave is my favourite Silver Sun record and one of my favourite albums of all time. Seeing as it was vastly underrated upon release and swiftly swept under the carpet by Polydor it struck me recently that it was received in much the same way as Weezer's second lp... the only difference is that Neo Wave has yet to attract the recognition that it truly deserves.
I'm just glad I got to see the band on the Neo Wave tour in Edinburgh back in the day when it seemed people were celebrating the arrival of that record with the gusto that it warranted.
Thoughts?

I... would have to disagree actually. I consider Neo Wave to be Silver Sun's weakest album (which basically translates to 9/10 rather than the automatic full marks that the others got), whereas I reckon Pinkerton completely blows away anything else Weezer have ever recorded... or will ever record, if they carry on the way they're going.
Incidentally, I clicked the link in your signature and I would urge everyone else to do so. I'm listening to a ridiculous amount of that kinda thing at the moment, so I feel reasonably qualified to say it's awesome.
Philonski - October 17, 2008 06:01 PM (GMT)
Gah! Why do so many people say that Neo Wave isn't as good as the other albums? I completely don't hear it like that. It was my favourite for ages (although now I prefer the first one) and I still like it more than the last two. But like you say, Jayem, it's only a matter of degree...
I didn't notice that Pinkerton had got 'recognition' until earlier this year, when I expressed what I thought was the controversial view that, "Nobody likes Pinkerton but it's my favourite." The room was in uproar and everyone in the room said it was the best and everyone knew it. Oh really? OK then.
Gusto is a good word to describe the atmosphere at those Neo Wave gigs. *Sigh* [reminisces]

Ahhh, I like 'Ben' best - that's a really nice song. You might both be interested in the programmes we (well, Mr Philonski) made about Chiptunes a while ago:
http://www.mcld.co.uk/flatfour/chiptunes/ They covered music made on the ZX Spectrum, Atari, Commodore and Nintendo.

Yeah, the Neo Wave tour was great. All of a sudden they doubled their set length - and while the sort of music Silver Sun do lends itself very well to quick on/quick off/have some of that-type giggery, I was still happy they did.
There were keyboards and stuff weren't there? Or am I imagining that now?
arcadecoma - October 19, 2008 01:31 PM (GMT)
Hmm, yeah i think you may be right about the keyboards. I'm not certain about that though. They started with Cheerleading and ended with Trickle Down - flippin' incredible!!
Another Silver Sun show in Scotland is long overdue!
Cool, thanks for checking out my 8-bit shenanigans. I have a pile of cds that i'm desperate to get rid of so if anyone wants one then pm me your address. It comes with 3D glasses so that should be incentive enough for anyone :)

Pixie Pixie is my all time favourite SS track............... :D
arcadecoma - October 21, 2008 08:33 AM (GMT)
Awesome!!
I think Hey Girl Friend or Cheerleading would be my all time fave SS track.
I heard the awesome
Neo Wave demos recently and the breakdown in Hey Girl Friend really took me by surprise.

i've got the neo-wave demos and the japanese version. i love it. i cant say its weak at all. i think prohpet on the prairie kinda goes out there a bit and maybe wasnt the greatest choice.
its annoying to hear ways of love and why so blue left off the album because they're blistering pop tunes. the "other" version of sharks is brilliant. i remember using the lyrics to sharks in an english essay i did once (quoted of course). my teacher rather liked them but refused to believe they were from "some rock band".
and the b-sides that came with it! jessica is one of my favourite tunes, and disguise, reportedly by "Blak Sun". brilliant.
i love neo-wave. a quick flip through front row and it's on now. perfect.

Have I got the Neo Wave demos? Was it one of JB's bootleg series? I haven't listened to those for ages...

I just found this review on amazon by someone called Fingerbar Fiddleston "lord melbury"....
***** The greatest album ever made, 24 Sep 2004
I know that every review on Amazon gushes hyperbole about the particular release they make reference to. In this case it is more than justified. This album is without doubt the greatest album of the 1990's, containing as it does the most uninhibited, most concise, most ear-bashingly beautiful tunes this side of hell. If you are a fan of Slayer's Reign In Blood album and also The Beach Boys' Carl & the Passions album then you will like this album v much.
Do yourself a mischief and buy the bloomin' thing.
Wise words!

Neo Wave is a great album, its just the production and a slight change in the style of songs that made it a harder album to digest i think.
