Title: Nick's New Stuff
Description: I've Been Buying....
Nick - May 8, 2008 08:54 AM (GMT)
In no particular order, (and I'm sorry it's all mainstream stuff, I'm getting boring again)
James - Hey Ma. It's James. They do anthems. It's good. Saw them live. They didn't disappoint. 3/5, not for everyone, fans will love it tho'
REM - Accelerate. Return to form, classic REM stuff, I love this album 5/5
Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely. Dirty, sleazy rock album. Great! Messrs Benson and White should consider changing day jobs. 4/5
Delays - Everything's the Rush. I'm biased, I love Delays. Soaring harmonies, lush melodies. Silver Sun with synthesizers maybe? The car stereo's not sounded so good for ages.4/5
Pete & The Pirates - Little Death. Englisk punk-lite at its best. Not overlong, but full-on enjoyment factor. 4/5
Young Knives - First album. Hmmm, not my cup of tea, too strident. 2/5
So what have y'all been listening to of late? Make me some recommendations please! :D
Alex H - May 12, 2008 08:58 PM (GMT)
New albums from Delays, James, Mostly Autumn and Rogue Wave. You probably won't like Mostly Autumn, but might like Rogue Wave. I'd recommend the first album though.

Elbow, Death Cab for Cutie and an oldie by the Starting Line to ensure I qualified for free postage by those good people at Amazon.....
Elbow is a grower. I'll have to put it in the car on my return to work.
Death Cab - Lovely! It's my first foray into DCFC territory, and I like it.
Starting Line - again, first foray. For two quid you mustn't grumble. Emo angst personified, I guess.
Apologies for lack of communications, but I don't have much to say, really........

I love Elbow more than I could possibly express in words.

The new Feeder album arrived here yesterday, and it's actually sounding quite good (and the two extra tracks on the limited edition are possibly the best on the album).
Did anyone get the free download of Miss You from
feederweb.com?
Grant (frontman) says this is the first time Mark Richardson felt right in the band, with regards to when he was writing the songs, and that it has 'put the band right again.'

Weezer is on order - I'll post in the other thread when I've copped an earful!
I had Coldplay for Father's Day.
Errm, sorry, but I actually quite like it. I'll unsubscribe from the board immediately!!!! :(
Alex H - June 23, 2008 05:06 PM (GMT)
I heard Coldplay's new single last week, when watching a video created by the Creaky Board's frontman, who claims Chris Martin ripped off a vocal melody from one of his songs. They do sound quite similar, though the Creaky Board's dood did say he also nicked the melody, from The Legend of Zelda on the SNES.
I did quite like the Coldplay tune, compared to what else I've heard of theirs.

I just found out they're playing a few dates over here this month, will you be going to see them?
I wish I'd found out sooner as I would have bought the new album with a view of going to the Manchester gig. £20+ and 2 hours travelling is a bit much for a band I haven't heard much by though.

Weezer - a bit disappointed if I'm honest.
Fleet Foxes - Don't believe the hype, it's dull
Pendulum - In Silico - I shouldn't like this, but I do, it's ace!
We Are Scientists - I love this! Heavy rotation on the car stereo!
Nick - August 2, 2008 12:33 PM (GMT)
The Hold Steady - excellent! Believe the hype, it's very, very good!
Los Campesinos - Love this album, but I don't think it will be a stayer.

Just bought Mark Morriss's cd Memory Muscle. I'm downloading it onto my ipod to listen to on holiday, so no verdict yet, but iTunes calssify its genre as "Gospel & Religious"!
Should make interesting listening for this agnostic!

Mark Morriss - If you like the Bluetones you'll like this. Got tickets to see them at Lincoln Engine Shed, where they're supposed to be doing the whole of "Expecting to Fly" - Excellent!
Primary 5 - High Five Agree with Alex on this, too long waiting for Teenage Fanclub. This is good!
Daniel Wylie - Car Guitar Star. If you Like teenage Fanclub you like Primary 5. If you like Primary 5 you'll love Daniel Wylie. Glorious guitar based singer songwriter tunes.

Kings of Leon - I think it's a grower!

I like the record, but after a couple of listens it's possibly my least favourite so far. They seem to have pushed the button marked "epic" on virtually every track, and along the way they've lost a bit of their identity. They sound unique - nay, odd, or at least they did before. The rough edges have been smoothed out a bit...

'S funny, I thought the same about the new Zutons album, which also arrived yesterday. I' like it, but not ever such a lot yet. Still they're both in the car for the week, tough I have to admit I couldn't resist another blast of the Eureka Machines album on the way back from a course today.

Hooray! They'll be touring again in January and February. Meanwhile... this is how great they are live:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MrGDq3vSBsChris had had about two hours sleep after playing with The Sisters of Mercy in a completely different country the previous evening. And yet they were still this ace...

The return of an old time favourite, ladies and gentlemen, I give you...
Matthew Sweet - Sunshine Lies.
Ace return to form by a much underrated songsmith. Very reminiscent of Tom Petty in places. Not for everyone, but a powerpop fave returns to form!
Alex H - October 10, 2008 07:56 PM (GMT)
Ooooh, he has a new album out? I'll look into that.
The news is Teenage Fanclub have been working on a new album for a few months. :D As have Superdrag, who seem to consider Teenage Fanclub as their main influence. Here's a free new song:

So I loved the new Matthew Sweet album so much I treated myself to his compilation album with Susannah Hoffs called Under The Covers Vol. 1 for a quid off Amazon.
You won't find the meaning of life in there, but you will find some superb harmonies and guitar work on an album of esoteric covers. a quite sublime album, and one of the nicest I've heard in ages.
Four stars in anyone's book!
Alex H - October 15, 2008 07:37 PM (GMT)
Yep, I like that album too. :)
Nick - November 19, 2008 07:28 PM (GMT)
I have recently acquired the entire New Pornographers catalogue.
I suggest you all do, as soon as...
