I was reading an article in New Scientist today about 'Greenwashing' - a term I'd never heard before. It's basically when companies project they have a positive image towards the environment, something they do to try and conceal the damage they're actually causing. Most of us know these organisations do such things, but it cited examples like VW advertising their new Golf as "powerful and green" when infact it's CO₂ emissions are well above average for a car of its size, BPs 'beyond petroleum' campaign (they're actually encouraging people to drive more, giving them a clear conscience by saying the damage they cause can be repaired by the individual carbon-offsetting) and B&Q claiming to be green by selling solar panels, but at the same time advertising a big sale on patio heaters, air-conditioning etc...the sort of things that are contributing to global warming.

The guy who wrote the article also has a grudge against Chris Martin (which is never a bad thing). He's set up a website to expose organisations and people who 'greenwash' - probably just to promote his book. ;) He's even going to expose The Carbon Neutral Company and Responsible Travel.com...
