Title: A lovely way to waste a day... and money...
shadowmeow - December 31, 2003 02:02 AM (GMT)
Strolling along in the daylight crowd of people, a dressed-for-warm-weather Shanna munched on a hot dog. She was wearing white shorts (hoping no one would notice the day old fuzz under the tan) and a blue shirt that said 'Tae's Noodle House' on it in great bubble letters. She loved that shirt for some strange reason...
She spotted one of this practically-impossible-to-win-against-little-kids game booths up ahead. Pressing against the flow of people, she slowly wound her way there. Oddly enough, there was a sagaceous-looking old woman running the booth, and only one waiting competitor, a 7 year old boy. "I'll play," she announced, happy at the large grin spreading accross the boy's young face. She slid over the two dollars.
"3, 2, 1... go!" The old lady cried. And they were off, just the two of them. Shanna aimed her squirt gun at the center of the evil-looking clown's mouth and shot a steady stream at it. She won by a far cry.
"Here you go," the lady announced, handing Shanna a good luck four-leaf clover in a bottle on a keychain. Noting the depressed look on the young kid's face, she silently handed it to him. He grinned at her, and ran off to his waiting parents, still smiling.
"That was mighty nice of you," the woman announced. "'Ere, have one for yourself. One good turn deserves another, eh?"
Shanna was surprised. "But, I really didn't..." but the old lady had already shoved the keychain into her hand and sent Shanna away. Shanna shrugged, she had been in need of a new keychain, anyways...
She sat down on a surprisingly empty bench and began to fasten her keys to the new 'good luck' keyring.
Drathor - February 17, 2004 02:32 PM (GMT)
Greg occaisonally came to the amusement park to ride a few rides here and there, and play a few games. He knew that for the most case, the games were rigged, but occaisonally he won some pretty nice prizes. Greg, unlike Shanna, was dressed a little warmer, wearing blue jeans, a red sweater, and a black leather jacket with a wool insulator in it.
He had just happened to be passing by the clown-game booth when the game started, and decided to watch for a moment, having nothing better to do. After the game was over, he was about to walk away when he saw Shanna give the keychain to the little kid.
He smiled, a little surprised at the kindness that both Shanna and the game-lady showed. It may have only been a keychain, but people being nice like that seemed pretty rare. In fact, he thought it rare enough where he had to walk over to the bench and give a little recognition for it.
"Not very often you find people that nice.... even if it is for something as small as a keychain...," Greg said, smiling, "it's good to know there are a few generous people in this world."
shadowmeow - March 18, 2004 01:37 AM (GMT)
Shanna looked up at the presumably young man with interest. She heard the niceness in his voice, so decided to counter his praise with some of her own. "And it is even rarer to be praised by a stranger. One good deed gets another in return, I suppose," she mused. She looked up at Greg with reasonable friendliness in her big orangey eyes.
"The kid deserved it. I'm sure he's done more training than me, anyways," she said with a smile. "Oh, by the way, I'm Shanna Montgomery. And you are?" she asked, extending her hand."
Drathor - March 20, 2004 06:41 AM (GMT)
"Greg Thompson," Greg said shaking Shanna's hand, "nice to meet you."
"And I guess it IS rarer for a complete stranger to walk up to someone just to praise them for a good deed," Greg said shrugging, "but I tend to do things people would consider odd."
Greg looked over at the game booth, "Little kids do really seem to enjoy those games, don't they? Heh, I used to love carnival games..."
Greg looked over at Shanna again, "Well, anyways, would you mind a complete stranger sticking around a little bit just to talk? Usually pretty hard to meet nice people, so I figure, might be good to get to know you a little."
Greg shrugged again, "But, if you do mind, I'll just leave now."
shadowmeow - March 20, 2004 03:29 PM (GMT)
Shanna was highly amused by her new acquaintance's forthright and outgoing manner. She shook her head with a smile and patted the empty seat next to her. "No, I don't mind in the slightest. Greg... that's a nice name..." she mused.
Shanna glanced over at the fair booths hollering at passerbys that they'd give their kid a free teddy, even if he or she didn't pop the balloon, catch the duck, throw the ball into the hoop; whatever. Shanna enjoyed being amongst humans, and all their splendid glory and the naivity of their children. All children are naive at some point, she reminded herself.
Fearing she was ignoring Greg, Shanna looked off at the rides in the park. "Don't they look fun?" she asked, with a touch of sadness. "But big kids like us can't ride the rides 'till it's dark," she said, mimicking an annoying voice. "Sorry, I just miss the rides... riding them in daylight...." She cut herself short and turned back to Greg. "Sorry, you must think I'm some wierdo person now..." she said with a bright smile.
Drathor - March 21, 2004 07:57 AM (GMT)
Greg sat down, and laughed as Shanna asked if he thought she was weird.
"Maybe a little, but hey, people who aren't at least a little strange are boring... I have to agree though about rides being fun... though I sometimes feel like fainting afterwards if it is a rollercoaster," Greg said, calmly, "besides... if someone being weird bothered me, I would be a hypocrite."
Greg smiled slightly to himself. He always suggested to people there was something odd about him, but his personality often kept it pretty well masked. He looked around at the people, watching all the kids having fun. Kids were so easily amused... Though it applied to all species... heck, even cats. Give a kitten a ball of yarn, it will be kept busy for a long time.
Greg laughed silently to himself as he thought about it.
"I mean, how many people do you know who aren't afraid to walk up to complete strangers and make some sort of conversation with them... when they aren't drunk and acting like idiots that is..."
shadowmeow - March 21, 2004 02:46 PM (GMT)
"I mean, how many people do you know who aren't afraid to walk up to complete strangers and make some sort of conversation with them... when they aren't drunk and acting like idiots that is..."
Shanna laughed at this, and said. "Just me... although I don't know very many people, so I'm in no mood to jugdge. Maybe it's just a normal thing? So, it's settled. We're normal, and everyone else is wierd," she said with a wink.
After a few moments of staring wistfully at the rides, Shanna asked, "so what do you so, Greg? For a job, I mean?"
Drathor - March 21, 2004 03:31 PM (GMT)
Greg laughed when Shanna suggested they were normal and everyone else was weird. He was definately enjoying this conversation.
"I don't really have a job... I'm a pre-med student at Keaton... I've been trying to find a part-time job but haven't been able to find any that fit my schedule...," Greg said, shrugging, "My grandparents have been helping me out financially..."
Greg then looked up at the sky for a moment, thinking a little bit, before looking at Shanna again, "What about you?"
shadowmeow - March 21, 2004 03:43 PM (GMT)
"Yeah, me too," Shanna said bleakly. "I'm studying first-year Drama down at Keaton. Nice school, but a bit steep for someone who, like me, has no job. I've been looking for part-time work, but, you know... The last paycheck I got was for being in the traditional 'Hamlet' play as Ophelia. Good play, if you're into that. You know, love a guy, go nuts, pick bones for flowers and kill yourself. Aaaand get paid," she said with a smile. "Wasn't very much, though. Their Ophelia had broken her leg going mountain climbing, and I was available and I knew the lines, so..." she trailed off. "But I've been talking too much. What do you like to do, Greg?" she asked, diverting attention from her lack of profession.
Drathor - March 22, 2004 06:22 AM (GMT)
"Let's she... things I like to do...," Greg said thoughtfully, looking at the sky again, "well, I like to cook... like watching movies... occaisonally like going places just to watch people... I know, odd hobby, but it's funny what people do sometimes... and well... I like helping people when they are having problems... it would be nice if no one had any major problems, but hey, it's a good feeling to help someone through the pain they are experiencing, whether emotional or physical."
Greg then looked at Shanna again, "Drama huh? Some plays aren't too bad... I'm certainly no expert on them, but some of Shakespeare's plays are interesting..."
shadowmeow - April 9, 2004 11:33 PM (GMT)
Shanna listened to Greg's monologue with interest. Someone who could divert her attention from her craving cigarettes for so long had to be worth listening to. "You sound like a nice guy, Greg. Pity there aren't more people like you in this world...."
She shook her head and, seizing the opportunity to talk about her most beloved subject, Shanna said quickly: "If you mean 'weird' and 'old' by 'interesting', I won't disagree, but there's just something about the wording of his plays. It's not easy to memorize all the time, especially some of the longer passages. But the fact that it's all writen in iambic is neat, and really rhythmic. It just rolls off your tongue at times..." Did she just say 'neat'? Shanna blushed furiously with the realization that she was a bit overpassionate today.
Drathor - April 9, 2004 11:51 PM (GMT)
Greg looked slightly puzzled when Shanna blushed for no apparent reason. At least, no reason visible by him, but he decided to ignore it.
"Heh, I think if I knew more people like me, me and the other person wouldn't get along too well...," Greg said, smiling, "not 100% sure why I say that, just a feeling I get..."
"Anyways, the passages are only hard to understand because of the old english style to it... people did used to use the kind of vocabulary back then... or so I've heard. Can't be sure without having actually lived back then," Greg said, laughing slightly, "but yeah, Shakespeare's writings are definately kind of catchy... it's amazing how his plays have lasted so long...."
shadowmeow - April 9, 2004 11:59 PM (GMT)
"No indeed... if the world was full of nice people, we'd be faaaar too overpopulated." Shanna said that with a smile and a wink. "I guess maybe there's a reason to madness..." she giggled. "That sounded Shakespearian... And , yeah, I can't believe how popular he still is! At least he wasn't like VanGough, who never sold a painting while he was alive. But Vangough was a bit odd... cut his ear off and sent it to his lover, or something... I think Shakespeare was relatively normal in comparison to that."
(sorry, short!)
Drathor - April 10, 2004 03:23 AM (GMT)
"Vangough.. heard the name.... never heard anything about him until now... yeah, that definately isn't normal...," Greg said, blushing slightly at what Shanna said about nice people.
Though he also wondered about that at the same time. Odd thing was, he never had a girlfriend. Most girls he met thought him to be too nice, or just pretending to be really nice to manipulate them. It really confused him sometimes.
Bah... you need to learn to stop thinking so much, Greg thought to himself.
Greg scratched the back of his head slightly, then said, "Of course, who's to say what's normal? I mean, while most people would think only a lunatic would do that, maybe to him it was a sign of devotion... so really, what's normal is like beauty... it's just in the eye of the beholder..."
shadowmeow - April 12, 2004 03:09 AM (GMT)
Shanna acquiested to Greg's statement, though couldn't help but add: "so is being a stalker. Kinda creepy, if you think about it. But I suppose it could be beautiful... in an abstract kind of way. Just hope a guy never gets that obsessed with me!" she said with a light giggle.
Which isn't likely, considering I'm a smoking-addicted bitch 99% of the time. It'd take a really screwed up or reaaaaaalllyy tolerant guy to handle me. Not to mention sedate. Yeesh! Crap, now I want a cigarette. Shanna figured she needed to stop thinking about those kinds of things. So basically, stop thinking period!
"So, Greg, do you have a girlfriend? Or are you here all by yourself, like me?" Shanna asked.
Drathor - April 12, 2004 03:35 AM (GMT)
Greg shivered as he thought about it. He hadn't really thought about what Shanna just said about stalkers.
"I'm by myself... for some reason I have had a terrible love life... well... maybe not TOO terrible... more like... kind of empty..." Greg said in response to Shanna's question, "as for what you said about stalkers... yeah, guess you could say that... but that is kind of way on the negative side of that statement..."
Greg sighed slightly as he looked at the sky, thinking a little bit. Talk about relationships always put Greg into deep thought. He was always confused about how to word his experiences, so basically he pretended to most people that they never happened... though that was basically a fact at the same time.
shadowmeow - April 12, 2004 03:40 AM (GMT)
Shanna immediately apologized. "I'm sorry, Greg, I don't mean to be negative. I'm just not a very positive person by nature." Why was she apologizing again? Oh wait, yes, now she remembered: Greg was a nice guy. He seemed decent. The first honest guy she'd met in awhile. Hmmmm... maybe that made up for a little bit of her slightly jaded outlook on life. Maybe even more than a bit. God, men are irritating! she thought. Except Greg. He seems nice.
"Well, you seem to be a good guy. Wonder why.... ah well, not really my buisness. I have a nonexistant lovelife. All the guys I know are complete scumbags and dirty scoundrels, just out for cheap... well, I shouldn't burden you." she said with a smile.
Drathor - April 12, 2004 02:39 PM (GMT)
Greg laughed slightly, "Don't worry about it... Not many people I know are as optimistic as I am... I'm fine with that though."
Greg then looked at the ground quietly, thinking a little more, then said, "Unfortunately, most guys tend to be kind of burdens on society. I'm not sure why I'm different, but I am for some reason. Not that I really mind being different... but it has caused me some difficulties..."
Greg glanced over at Shanna, then looked at the ground again, and sighed.
"Maybe I was just too quiet as a kid and that's why I was having problems... with both genders... though the girls would just kind of pretend I wasn't there... while the guys were a bit more annoying...," Greg said, frowning, "though they learned pretty dang quick not to try to harm me physically... I normally don't like fighting, but I'm not so naive that I will completely refuse to fight if it becomes absolutely necessary."
shadowmeow - April 12, 2004 09:21 PM (GMT)
"Rough childhood?" Shanna asked softly. "Don't worry, you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." She ran a hand through her dark hair, highlighted by the sun.
Poor guy, she couldn't help thinking.
"I know what you mean... I was sent off to boarding school for awhile as a kid, but got chucked out because there were some awful girls who chose me as a victim... Learned the hard way that their leader was the Headmistress's daughter. Guess I got a lesson out of that, though. Don't go to boarding school!" Shanna laughed lightly. "Learned to fight, too. Comes in handy more and more now that I've grown older."
Drathor - April 12, 2004 11:10 PM (GMT)
Greg sighed slightly, "I'm guessing the headmistress's daughter told some lie, or at the very least, left something out... parents are a little too trusting of their kids sometimes... not that a little trust is a bad thing, but to believe your kid could never lie to you... that causes some real problems.."
Greg looked at the ground a bit deep in thought, then finally looked at Shanna again.
"But I guess that's just the way things go... I've kind of been thinking that society kind of goes in cycles... and that the reason that a lot of older people say things were better when they were a kid is kind of because of that... yet at the same time, things get introduced that alter the cycle that cause a bit of trouble," Greg then laughed slightly and smiled, "sorry... I think a little too much... I guess you could almost say I believe in fate... but at the same time, I kind of think that choices do matter as well... sorry if I'm boring you... I like to get a little too in depth of things sometimes..."
shadowmeow - April 15, 2004 04:19 AM (GMT)
Shanna smiled, oddly, she didn't mind Greg's one-manned conversations much. Normally, she would be the one in charge of conversation, but not this time... not today. Mellow days are good. Greg must be good for Shanna, then. A kind of anti-don't for her usual self-centeredness.
She smiled and let out a small laugh. "It's not problem, Greg. I think too much when I have the time. I don't think I know a single person that doesn't think too much... well, some of them don't think at all." She smiled sadly. "Sorry about that. I'm just a bitter old woman. ...and you're right. I think they are right, in a sense. Elderly people, I mean. Things probably were better in their day. Trust was valued, not like now... plus, they swing danced!" she said with a grin. "That's my secret passion," she said with a not-so-secret laugh.
Drathor - April 15, 2004 12:25 PM (GMT)
"Heh, if you're old, I'm a little pink monkey," Greg said laughing.
Greg looked up at the sky again, "You do bring up another good point though. Seems like people are a bit too willing to break promises and stab their friends in the back.
He looked at Shanna once again then said, "Pardon my ignorance, but what is swing dancing? Never really heard of it for some reason."
Greg laughed slightly as he said this.
shadowmeow - April 15, 2004 11:48 PM (GMT)
She giggled. To Shanna, it seemed impossible for someone to not know what swing dancing was. "Well, you see," she said, attempting to explain. "It's where the guy and the girl.... Oh ditch it. You know in movies based in the 1960's, and the go-dance-crazy scenes? That's swing dancing. I don't know how to explain it. ...I'd go for lessons, but I have no partner. No guys seem interested in any type of dancing, much less '60's type..."
Drathor - April 16, 2004 12:31 AM (GMT)
Greg thought hard and shook his head, "I think I MAY have seen that kind of dancing, but I'm not really sure... most of the old movies I've seen are John Wayne movies..."
Greg shrugged slightly, "And the aren't very many more recent movies that are based in the 60's... well, actually, Back to the Future isn't exactly recent, but I think that person ended up in the 60's... don't remember the dances clearly..."
He sighed slightly, kind of annoyed at himself. He really didn't like sounding stupid, but he wasn't afraid to say when he didn't know what something was or meant though either.
"Anyways... yeah, most guys are afraid they'll screw up really badly... me included..."
shadowmeow - April 18, 2004 08:03 PM (GMT)
Shanna offered a big grin, not really noticing Greg's miscomfort. She patted the top of his head in a mock-patronising way and said "no worries. Guys have self-consciousness issues. Mostly. Either they're overconfident, or not nearly confident enough. Especially when it comes to dancing," she said, lightening her speech a bit.
"I'm sure I could show you, but I'd probably look pretty silly dancing with myself in the middle of a carnivalground. You never know, though," she pretended to muse, grinning as she spoke. "I might get lucky and get money thrown at me! Probably only to stop me from dancing, but, you know..." she laughed as she said that, eyes smiling as she looked at Greg once more.
Drathor - April 19, 2004 01:29 PM (GMT)
Greg laughed slightly, "Yeah, would be odd for one person to do a two person dance in a place like this..."
Greg smiled slightly, "but if we really wanted to get people to throw money to get one of us to stop doing something, my singing would work best."
Greg looked down at the ground. Even he thought it funny once in a while that he agreed with most of the stereotypes for guys. He also thought it kind of odd that in many ways, there were some major differences between him and other guys. Maybe a side-effect of his magical ability?
Greg shrugged off that kind of random thought and looked at Shanna again, thinking a little. He was surprised that Shanna was so willing to talk to him. Most would have thought him a stalker or something. Who knows, maybe she did, Greg didn't know that. He was glad though that Shanna was giving him a chance, in any case.
"Anyways... guess I have to agree with you... my confidence level is usually pretty low... though I guess that's better then thinking I can jump over a few running helicopters on a motorcycle... that wouldn't be too pretty if I tried it and failed..."
shadowmeow - April 20, 2004 10:53 PM (GMT)
Why was Shanna feeling so liberal today? She'd already drenched Greg in her innermost feminist-crap talk, but he didn't seem to mind very much. Besides, it felt liberating. Was he just humoring her? Maybe. She didn't know, but Shanna was sure beginning to like this personal-annonymous relationship they seemed to have formed.
"Erm, sorry if I've made you feel uncomfortable, Greg..." she said, sitting back down again. "I'm not usually like this." Maybe that's not such a good thing, Shan. You'd scare him and half the populace away. She smiled wryly at her thoughts, knowing them to be true. Her usual cynic self, however, didn't appear in her speech. She wasn't even acting, oddly enough.
Shanna gave Greg an oddly appraising look after he had finished speaking. Maybe it was something about him... Oh God, did he know? About her... Was he hired by some professional wierdo-creature-magic-hunter-downer person? A stalker? No, that didn't seem to likely. He wasn't normal, either. Snake-sense told her that. Only one logical explanation then...
"You know, maybe you could sing, and I could dance and we'd earn double the income!"
Drathor - April 21, 2004 01:48 AM (GMT)
Greg laughed at that, "Yeah, good idea... either that or we would clear the area really quickly."
Greg smiled and looked at the ground again, "Don't worry about my slight discomfort... I'm always slightly uncomfortable... for one reason or another I always have a lot on my mind that I need to sort out..."
Greg stretched a little bit, but did not put his arm behind Shanna as many guys would do.
"If it makes you feel better though, I've always been calmer around women... please don't get the wrong idea, but I've always found women to be a little more understanding and honest...," Greg said, fairly quietly, but loud enough to be heard, "though I do realize that some are manipulative and such... just seems a little rarer though..."
He looked over at Shanna once more, still smiling a little bit.
"You know, sometimes I wonder if I was meant to be born as a girl, but when I really think about it, my personality would still be a bit strange," Greg said jokingly.
shadowmeow - April 21, 2004 07:56 PM (GMT)
Shanna grinned at Greg's last words. "Nah, I'm sure you're just fine as a guy!" and thought for a moment, grinning wryly with a twisted sort of lip formation. "But I have to disagree with you, Greg. Don't take this personally, please, but you can't have had much experience with women. With the very rare exception, all girls have a hidden bitchy-cold-heartedness to them." She tried to think of an example, but really couldn't. "Girls can be much more intimate as friends, but that hurts all the more if they'd ever betray you. If I was a guy," she said with a smile. "I'd either become a monk or go gay before I got a girlfriend."
Shanna paused, realizing she had been ranting. She blushed prettily, though unaware that she was blushing at all. "Sorry. Some subjects I just feel overly passionate about." At that moment, a group of teenagers walked past, laden with food of all kinds. Shanna's stomach grumbled, but she kept her sudden hunger quiet for politeness' sake.
Drathor - April 21, 2004 10:11 PM (GMT)
OOC: ((that post of yours got me thinking again... don't worry about it though, lol... been having problems with a friend lately *shrugs*))
IC:
Greg frowned slightly.
"Maybe you're right... but I don't know... most guys seem to be perverts, braggarts, jackasses, and many other things...," Greg said quietly, "I don't know... if you are right, I'd much rather take my chances with girls though..."
He looked at the sky slightly, "Seems to me that you're describing human nature more then anything though... pretty much everyone seems to have a split personality in one form or another... you're right that it hurts more when someone who seems really nice suddenly changes for the worst... b--"
He paused a bit suddenly, trying to think how to word what he was thinking. After a little bit he looked at Shanna.
"But I know for a fact that I just can't get along too well with other guys... I used to as a little kid... a little bit, but even then, I always felt a little more comfortable around girls... I can't really explain the reason, maybe there isn't a good explanation..."
Greg looked like he might have continued a little bit, but decided against it. He looked at the ground at the moment, then smiled just a little bit, "I guess we both kind of like to rant a little bit about certain things..."
shadowmeow - April 23, 2004 03:55 AM (GMT)
OOC: Meep! Sorry! Thinking's never good... serious side-effects! Lol, only joking... hope you and your friend are okay, though! ^^
IC:
Shanna thought for a second. Maybe Greg was right. Maybe there was something else. The call of the Human Nature? Well, hell, she didn't know. "Girls are soothing sometimes... but I'm sure guys can be, too." Shanna was only being fair, though her next words spoiled the mood. "If there are any 'knights in shining armor' out there." She realized this could have hurt Greg and hurriedly retracted her words. "I'm sorry," she apologized. "I'm just a bitter old woman trapped in a younger version's body."
A smile lightened her previous unhappy statement.
I guess we both kind of like to rant a little bit about certain things...
Shanna's stomach gave another impatient growl, this one quite audible. "And my stomache's going to go on a fuming tirade if I don't get more food into it soon!" she got up. "Care to join me for a hot dog?" she paused as her stomache growled irratably again. "...or four?" she laughed.
Drathor - April 23, 2004 12:10 PM (GMT)
"Sure, anyways, don't worry about apoligizing, I understand perfectly," Greg said, not at all annoyed by Shanna, "If you really mean something, don't hesitate to say it... even if it seems a little mean. I don't really take too many thing offensively... unless it is something done just for the sake of annoying me..."
He shrugged slightly, stood up and looked around for the nearest hot dog stand, "In any case, if something does bother me, I won't hesitate to let you know..."
Greg then noticed a hot dog stand not too far away, "I still don't think you're a bitter old woman though... there's a hot dog stand over there, you coming?"
Greg looked back in Shanna's direction as he pointed at the hot dog stand.
shadowmeow - April 23, 2004 11:37 PM (GMT)
I still don't think you're a bitter old woman, though.
"Well, that's good," she smiled. "At least one person has faith in me," she meant that to be lighthearted, but it turned into something more twisted and rather unfortunate sounding. Crap. "And I won't worry to speak my mind then. Same goes for you, too."
You coming?
"Yup!" she said and hopped off the bench, grabbing onto Greg's hand and pretty much pulled him to the hotdog stand. Yum. Her stomache gave a rumble of anticipation and pre-fufilment. Once again: Yum's the word! Shanna let go of Greg's hand and nodded apologetically. "Sorry, but I seem to have the insatiable appetite of a teenaged boy!" Rather impatiently, she waited as the person before them got their order.
Drathor - April 24, 2004 04:32 AM (GMT)
Greg was a bit surprised when Shanna suddenly grabbed his hand, but recovered quickly and managed to keep up.
"More like teenaged girl... for some reason I've usually seen girls eat a bit more then guys do... at least when they aren't anorexic," Greg said, shrugging slightly, "but maybe that isn't a very accurate observation... maybe it has been just the people I've seen. Hard to tell sometimes.... guess we should just say teenager, and leave it at that."
He smiled again, then looked over the price of hot dogs, then felt through his pockets and sighed with relief. He still had some spending money, thankfully. Not much though. A college student was always low on funds unless they had rich parents supporting them, or they worked like crazy.
shadowmeow - April 24, 2004 11:11 PM (GMT)
Shanna had barely heard Greg's gender equality statement. She was staring at the hotdogs with comic anticipation. Absently, she dug into her pocket with one hand and found a five dollar bill, something rare within itself. When it was their turn, Shanna immediately overwhelmed the vendor with her enthusiasm. "Hi,can Ipleasehaveacheesedogwithketchup?" she asked rapidly and stopped to take a deep inhale of air.
The poor man looked stupified. "Um, sorry miss, but could you repeat that, please?"
Shanna gave him an apologetic glance and hoped to Fate Greg wasn't laughing silently beside her. "Sorry. Can I please have a cheesedog with ketchup?"
"Sure thing," he replied and busied himself with her order.
"What will you have?" Shanna asked Greg in the meantime. "I've got money," she said mock-smugly as she waved the precious bill around like it was nothing. College students are poor. Money is a rare commodity!
Drathor - April 25, 2004 03:34 AM (GMT)
Greg scratched the back of his head nervously. He really preferred to pay for things himself, but wondered if Shanna would consider it rude if he didn't accept the offer.
He decided it best to be honest so he wouldn't be a hippocrite for telling Shanna to speak her mind, and not really speaking it completely himself.
"I can pay for it myself... I really hope you don't take this offensively, but I really like to pay for things I buy myself when possible... guess it is a slight pride issue... not sure," Greg said, a little nervously.
Not that Greg had a large ego or anything. There were just a few seemingly little things the just made Greg uneasy.

Shanna gave Greg a little grin. It was a man thing. This whole pride issue was something she could understand--to a point. She wasn't offended, and was secretely relieved she didn't have to relinquish much more of her hard-earned bill. Actually, she had found it on her early-morning jog, but that didn't matter...
"Well, if you're going to be that way..." she tried affecting an insulted tone, but broke down in a gigglefit half way through her sentance. She paid the rather confused vendor, and stared at her hotdog... all the yummy fatness she could possibly want just begging to be eaten.... but of course she'd wait for Greg to order. Her stomache gave a supremely unhappy low growl. Hurry up, she prayed.
"What'll you have?" the vendor asked his new customer, Greg.

"Cheesedog with ketchup and mustard please," Greg said, sounding slightly relieved that Shanna wasn't offended.
He looked over at Shanna as the vendor prepared his order, thinking a little bit. He was really surprised by Shanna. He never really expected that she would have talked to him much after he walked up to her.
Greg realized he was staring just a little too much, looked back towards the vendor, and payed him as he finished his order. He then stepped out of line, going near Shanna.
"Thanks for the offer though...," Greg said silently, still a little deep in thought.

Food. All rejoice in it's splendor... until Shanna realized Greg was watching her, that was. She stopped looking at her juicy fat-dog, thinking that perhaps it was rude and that she shouldn't be, well, so intense on it. Not that she'd know. Where Shanna was concerned, there's a fine line between rude and blunt. And hungry... oh please hurry....
The moment Greg stepped close to her, Shanna took a big bite out of her cheesedog and let out a low, satisfied moan of contentment. Good food. Cute guy. Great mood. Could this day get any better? she wodered silently, with a small smile on her lips.
"No problem," Shanna managed to say after she finally swallowed, having savored every bit of carbohydrate-drenched food she could have squeezed from the unfortunate food. "What's the matter?" she asked, suprisingly concerned at the distant look on Greg's face. "I hope I'm not that uncouth when I'm eating!"

Greg looked alert suddenly and looked at Shanna right in the eyes, "Oh, no no no, that wasn't what I was thinking about... I was kind of thinking... why it used to be so hard to talk to people..."
Greg then looked at the ground and sighed. He then looked at a few passing by people, then at Shanna again.
"I don't know... even though I hoped you were nice when I first walked up to you, and you definately turned out to be so... I kind of half expected you to just run away from me like I was some crazy stalker," he said honestly, then chuckled slightly, "guess I'm a little too analytical about situations sometimes... though there are some advantages about thinking about almost every situation... so its basically a double-edged sword.."
He bit of a small bit of his cheesedog, chewing slowly, but feeling a little more relaxed now that he got what he was thinking out in the open.
