Title: Petal by petal
Description: -Sammie

Violet is having a nice, long walk to clear her head. Granted, one wouldn't think that this crowded, busy street would be a good place to do one's thinking, but it suits Violet just fine. Even if she doesn't like crowds, and-
She really doesn't like crowds.
Excuse her while she ducks into the first quiet-looking shop she sees - it's a flower shop, incidentally - to wait for that suffocated-by-people feeling to pass.

SammieK - December 11, 2006 08:24 PM (GMT)
"Hi."

The girl is apparently alone in the shop - it's not really a super busy time of year, and the manager's gone to the bank.

"Can I help you?"

Danie - December 11, 2006 08:28 PM (GMT)
"Hm?" She looks up, slightly startled. She thought she was alone. "Oh. No, thank you. I'm just browsing."

She was looking at the lilies.
They're very pretty. Some of them are even her favorite color, purple.

SammieK - December 11, 2006 08:30 PM (GMT)
"All right. Let me know if you need help finding anything."

... mm, pretty.

It would be unprofessional to comment.

She resumes watering plants.

Danie - December 11, 2006 08:34 PM (GMT)
"I will." Pause. "Thanks."

She continues looking over the lilies, moves past them to some small potted plants. Among them are African violets, which she hasn't in fact seen before. But they're purple, and therefore pretty...

"What are these?"

SammieK - December 11, 2006 08:37 PM (GMT)
"African violets. They aren't too hard to take care of, but I wouldn't really recommend them for beginners."

She sets the watering can down and tilts her head.

"Do you garden much?"

Danie - December 11, 2006 08:42 PM (GMT)
"Um,...no. Not really," Violet admits.

She used to have plants in her dorm room every now and again, but they lasted only a few months, at most.

"I...dabble," she adds. "I'm not good at keeping plants alive for very long."

SammieK - December 11, 2006 08:44 PM (GMT)
Rosalli nods.

"Well, if you're good at following instructions, these guys aren't too difficult."

She nods affectionately towards the violets.

"What kinds of plants have you had before?"

Danie - December 11, 2006 08:49 PM (GMT)
"Oh."
Violet brightens. Instructions? She's very good at following instructions.

"Um..." Let's see. "Some ferns... one or two orchids. A cactus. Oh, and an ivy."

SammieK - December 11, 2006 08:53 PM (GMT)
Rosalli nods.

"Well, I can give you some pretty explicit instructions, and if there's anything unclear, you can always come back and ask us."

She grins.

"That's what we're here for."

Danie - December 11, 2006 08:59 PM (GMT)
"Really? That would be great."

She hadn't come in here with the intention of buying a plant,... but she likes plants, and she hasn't had one in a while, if you don't count cut flowers (because those don't last very long).

She fingers the petals of one of the flowers.
"...I think I'd like to try keeping one of these things alive again," Vi smiles. She gently picks up the plant in its plastic container and looks it over. "How about this one?"

SammieK - December 11, 2006 09:04 PM (GMT)
"Well, let's have a look."

Rosalli examines the plant.

"You want to make sure that the leaves look green and healthy, which these do, and that there's some buds on it that haven't flowered yet, which this one has."

She smiles.

"So looks like it's a good choice."

Danie - December 11, 2006 09:06 PM (GMT)
"Great." She smiles back.

Violet likes Rosalli. Rosalli is friendly.

"I'll take this one, then."

SammieK - December 11, 2006 09:18 PM (GMT)
"All right. Do you want some help picking out a permanent pot for it?"

Because you don't keep plants in the pots from the store forever, you know.

There's things that they need if they are to thrive.

Danie - December 11, 2006 09:19 PM (GMT)
"Yes, please."

...She didn't know you needed a different pot. The plastic ones worked just fine.
Well, she thought they did, up to now.

SammieK - December 11, 2006 09:22 PM (GMT)
"They're over here."

She leads the way.

"See, you want a shallower pot for an african violet, and a saucer that's wide and deep for watering. Those pots they come in are mostly just for transportation and stuff."

There is a rather large selection to choose from.

Danie - December 11, 2006 09:25 PM (GMT)
"Okay."

Violet looks over the selection, biting her lip.
It would be fair to say that she has absolutely no idea which to choose.

SammieK - December 11, 2006 09:29 PM (GMT)
Rosalli takes pity on her.

"The unglazed pots you have to water more frequently. The glazed ones hold moisture in better, and I personally think they're prettier."

She grins.

"And that's kind of the point, right?"

Danie - December 11, 2006 09:30 PM (GMT)
"Oh. Heh. Yeah, I guess so."

She picks one at random.
(It's glazed, and mostly blue.)

"Is this one okay?"

SammieK - December 11, 2006 09:33 PM (GMT)
Rosalli examines it critically.

"It's a little deep, but it should probably work."

She smiles.

"Now you need a saucer, and some pebbles."

Danie - December 11, 2006 09:45 PM (GMT)
"O...kay?"

Show her, please?

SammieK - December 11, 2006 09:52 PM (GMT)
Rosalli smiles.

And guides her through the process of selecting a deep saucer for the pot to sit in and helps her select a small bag of coloured pebbles and explains why all these are necessary.

The whole point is to help the girl keep the violet alive as long as possible.
