Keye is nervous. Very.
He has no peace offering, no please-forgive-me gift, because girls are easy, you get them flowers, but your (recently estranged?) twin brother, that's different.
So basically he's tried to neaten up and stand up straight and look calm and all that sort of thing.

And he knocks.

Then he backs well away, on the off chance that Benji goes ballistic at the very sight of him.

There are quiet futuristic shooting sounds emanating from the room.

"Come in, it's open!"
(Psheww, psheww! Blam!)

He's busy with a game, leaning back in his chair, facing away from the door. He's taking a several-hours-long break from anything even remotely resembling studying. There's nothing like pretending to blow things up to get your mind off boring classwork.

He does as he's told. He steps inside and then he stands there, saying nothing. He's drawing a blank, and the flashy lights are distracting him.

When the visitor doesn't try to engage him in conversation right away, Benji pauses the game and spins around in his chair to face him. His formerly drowsy expression turns into a sullen glare.

"What is it?"

Keye flinches.
"I...I j-just came to...to say I'm sorry."

Benji just looks at him for a few moments, then spins his chair back around (yay for spinny computer chairs).

"Oh," he says simply. "That's nice."

"Wait!"
He supresses an urge to inform Benji that he started it.

"Please. I mean it. I'm sorry."

"Okay. So?"
He glances over his shoulder at Keye, scowling.
It doesn't occur to him that he should apologize too. He was the wronged party, here - his nose got broken. So there.
"What do you want from me?"

"What can I do?"

Oh. Benji asked a question.

"I wanna know what I can do to make it right."

Benji blinks sullenly at him, his lower lip sticking out just a little.
No, he isn't pouting. Shut up.

"Stop being a total ass, maybe," he grumbles. "That might help."

"I'm trying!"
He takes a deep breath.
"I'm so sorry. I'll do anything to fix it. I'm t-trying, I'm trying n-not to be an ass, please..."

"Try harder."
Okay, that was mean.

Benji sighs - he doesn't hold grudges very well. It's just not in him.
"You broke my fucking nose." Growl. "You make it really hard to not think you're an ass, you know?"

"I know." He wilts. "I should just...give up, huh. If I were you, I wouldn't forgive me either."

"And that." Benji snaps, jabbing a finger at him. "Don't do that. It's fucking manipulative."
Grr, he's angry.
"That's not fair. You do some dumb shit, I get mad at you for it, and then you're all, 'Oh, guess you don't like me anymore, blah blah blah'. Or else you tell me it's none of my business." Glare. "Quit it."

"What?"
Blink.
He's sideswiped.

"I...huh? I d--I didn't know...I was doing that. I mean, I mean it--'cause people used to beat up on me and yeah, sometimes they'd say they were sorry, but they'd always do it again so I wouldn't believe it--so if I was you, I wouldn't believe it. That's...that's all I meant. I w-wasn't tryin' to manipulate you. I won't do it anymore."

"...Good."
Benji is somewhat appeased.
"...So what brought you here?" In his limited experience, people don't just randomly show up and apologize after having been told to go the hell away.

"...to say sorry?"
That's not being manipulative, is it?
Keye is having some trouble grasping this.

"I figured that."
A wry smirks pulls briefly at his lips.
"I mean, why all of a sudden? Why now?"

"C-can I sit?" he indicates the bed.

"I, uh...to tell the truth...it took me a little while to...y'know. Get up the courage."

Benji nods - yeah, go ahead, have a seat.

"Really."
He believes it, though it strikes him as strange.
"Well, okay."

...

"Sorry I yelled at you."

He sits down, running a hand through his hair and laughing listlessly.
"No big. S...sorry I...y'know. Punched you in the face."

Benji laughs and says, "That hurt."
He leans back in his chair, spinning from one side to the other.
"D'you usually punch people in the face when they piss you off?"
If so, he's going to have to be more careful.

"No." he tilts his head to one side. "You shoved me. It seemed like you were attacking me. So I got scared and mad and..."
Shrug.
"When all that stuff happens, yeah, I gotta say I usually do punch people in the face."

He laughs again, rather weakly.
"Okay, putting 'shoving' on my list of 'things not to do around Keye'."
It's starting to be a long list. His twin is complicated.
"Anyway, it's not like you're totally blameless." Oh joy, he's on the defensive. "Why'd you just up and disappear that night, huh?"

"I'm not, I'm not!" he waves his hands. "I need to work on self-control, I know it was my fault, that's why I c-came to apologize."

Oh, crap. That again.
"I, uh...I told you. Something came up. Listen, d'you, uh...well, it doesn't matter if you do or not, I guess. I, um...I saw my dad as...a ghost, and um...yeah."

"You...did?"
The skeptic in him is laughing cynically and insisting there are no such things as ghosts.
The recently non-skeptical, innish person in him is staring at Keye.
"For real? I mean, not... what the hell. Why?"

"Dunno why. But I went home with him."
Her. But let's not worry too much about details.
"I did leave you a note."

"Yeah, you left me a note." His tone couldn't get much drier if it was saturated in Saharan dust. "Very thoughtful of you. Disappearing in the middle of the night - when you were supposed to go see a doctor in the mornng - and you left me a note. Your thoughtfulness just fuckin' astounds me."

"I...I..."
Okay, now that he thinks of it, that was a little inconsiderate.
"I'm sorry, Benji. I'm really sorry."

"Yeah, well..."
Grumble, grumble, curse, grumble...
"Did you at least go to the nurse's office?"

"Um...no." he looks nervously at Benji.

"For chrissakes, Keye."
Benji groans and drags a hand down his face, shaking his head.
"Don't go making things easy on yourself or anything..."

"I was scared."
He stops himself from whimpering. Doesn't want to manipulate.
"I didn't want to go alone. And I thought y-you'd be mad at me for leaving."

...so he stayed away and made it worse.
He astounds me, sometimes.

"I was pissed off at your for leaving because you shouldn't have been wandering around, and I figured you were trying to skip out on going to the nurse."
Siiiigh.
"If you'd've asked, I'd still have gone with you."

"Oh."
He blinks.
He's ashamed of himself.
"I'm sorry, Benji, I didn't...know."

"No. Of course you didn't."
That's not sarcasm, by the way.
"But remember, okay? Just because I'm pissed off at you, doesn't mean I won't help you out."

"Okay." he nods slowly. "I'll remember that. And...and I won't hit you ever again, Benji."

Benji raises a skeptical eyebrow.
"I don't think that's a promise you ought to make."
And now, a grin.
"I mean, I can be pretty damn annoying."

"If you really need a smack upside the head, I might make an exception."
He grins.
Joking! It's good!

"Fair enough," Benji chuckles. "But don't break anything important."
Like his face. Or his hands. Or anything, really.
That would hurt, and he's something of a stranger to pain.
