Title: Work & Pleasure
Description: -For Amy-

Leah didn't usually blend her work life and private life. In fact, she loathed doing so -- it created faded lines of boundary, and she never knew when she was supposed to be working or having fun, and ended up feeling guilty for both at different times. It was a bad place to be, but there she was. Right smack dab in the middle.

She'd taken the time to at least look nice for the evening. Pressed khakis and a blouse, her wavy auburn hair pulled up in a high ponytail. She pursed her lips as she looked over the drink menu, feeling a bit lost.

She'd never been much of a drinker, and here she was, trying to figure out what in the world was the difference between Blue Caracao and Schnapps and... All those things that she wasn't even sure how to pronounce.

Finally settling on a fruity sounding concoction, she smiled to the waitress and leaned back in her corner booth, eyeing the place suspiciously before taking a small manilla envelope from her bag. Inside were pictures, letters, and a few small belongings. Things that would look irrelevant to most, but that would help her get a grip on this case.

Lounge singer at Faded by night, registered nurse by day -- a middle aged woman who had gone missing two weeks ago and every lead had turned up empty. Which was why Leah now sat, preparing to concentrate on the items in the envelope and the feel of this place.

Kali was sitting in the back, in the shadows, hidden from view of the general public. He didn't frequent Faded, mostly because the Unnish that normally drank there were wary of him. He was odd, an enigma that they felt they needed to solve. He much preferred Dark, where no one cared who he was, and the Unnish were overpowered by the Innish. At least there, no one asked him questions.

Yet here he found himself, watching the people moving around, watching the people getting drinks, watching the people sitting at tables. Watching, observing.

He took a long gulp of his Long Island Iced Tea, and sighed. What was he doing here? The Unnish didn't give one shit about a lone Druid, and he was supposed to be helping them with what? Solving some missing person case?

He wondered why he'd taken the job; until, that is, he stuck his hand in his pocket. His pocket that had quite a nice wad of cash in it.

Ah yes. That was why he'd taken the job.

He didn't need the money, but money was always good...

His eyes swept the room once more, taking in anyone who might be suspicious, when a slightly familiar looking head caught his eye. A young woman, dressed nicely but not too nicely. Hmm. Ahh, yes.

Audrey Leah. Kali chuckled, and ran a hand through his hair, getting it out of his face, before heading out of the shadows, carrying his drink of course. Reaching her table, he smirked, and cleared his throat. "I suppose it's my turn to bother."

Leah nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound of the male voice, and she quickly turned to find herself looking up at the familiar face of Kali. Wow. Well, she didn't exactly expect to be seeing him again, that was for sure. She'd thought about it, of course, but that really never mattered much.

She took a deep breath to slow her terrified, racing heart, then gave him a small smile.

"Hello again," she greeted, brightening a touch. She quickly and discreetly moved the envelope from the table and pushed it down into the seat beside her, not really sure of telling him that she was there to work.

What if he went on about her Sight again? Or what if he decided he shouldn't bother her while working? Why did that even matter??

She gestured to the table, offering him a seat. "I don't usually come here," she said, a bit loudly over the music. She shrugged, then turned to nod gratefully to the waitress as she deposited her drink on the table.

"You?" she asked, turning back and leaning forward to hear him.

Noting the envelope as he sat down in the seat next to her, Kali set his drink on the table and leaned back, folding his arms over his chest as he eyed the guests from this new vantage point. He didn't mention the envelope, of course. She obviously wanted to hide it.

"Are you asking if I generally come here?" He raised a brow slowly, surveying a likely looking suspect; a heavyset man, looking about fifty or so, and getting himself right drunk while heckling one of the entertainers. Hmm.

Turning his gaze to her, he shook his head. "No, I frequent Dark." Maybe she'd heard of it, maybe she hadn't. It had a bad reputation though, so if she had heard of it, he didn't know how she'd take the news that he spent his drinking hours there.

Taking another long sip of his drink, he watched her. "Why're you here tonight if you don't normally come here?" He'd leaned forward as well to speak with her over the music.

District83 - December 25, 2005 07:13 AM (GMT)
Dark. Wow. No, she definitely wouldn't have frequented there, even if she did enjoy the bar life. Too many of her own cases had started out in that place, and she'd luckily been able to procure an escort when going in.

Then he had to go being all perceptive and notice that she didn't come there often and yet was there now.

Ah. She opened herself up for that one, then, didn't she?

"Work," she replied, a bit loudly. She grimaced, shaking her head as she pointed to her ears and then to the loud band. She sighed and picked the envelope back up, shaking it a bit. "New case, tied in with this place, so... Coming to get a good feel."

She shrugged, putting it back down for now. She reached for her drink, and took a large sip. She smiled at first, appreciative of the simple fruitiness, then immediately cringed as the bitter vodka and sours hit her tongue.

How ironic that they were both there for work. Kali nodded to show that he'd comprehended what she'd said, but he didn't feel the need to reply, especially with the loud band playing.

He did so hate this style music. It was making him feel bitter, and he downed the rest of his drink, hoping that the alcohol would mellow him out a bit. He noticed her face as she drank her drink, and it made him smirk.

"I take it you don't normally drink either, hmm?"

That much was obvious, or, if she did drink, she didn't drink what she'd ordered. He chuckled, and shook his head, before his eyes did another sweep of the room.

"... felt anything yet?" After his sweeping gaze, he leaned closer to her, asking her quietly so as not to attract attention to them. After all, people didn't tend to enjoy being watched, especially not by someone working for the cops.

District83 - December 25, 2005 07:29 AM (GMT)
"No, I really don't," she replied, trying to smile despite her face being slightly screwed in disgust. However, she took another drink regardless. It was strange; the drink was bitter in aftertaste, but the wet sweetness of the initial taste had her going back for more.

Eventually, the bitterness didn't affect her. She had drank enough to know that much. Whether it was the layering of the drink or the dulling of her senses, she didn't know.

She set the glass down and listened, leaning in as he did. Had she felt anything? Not particularly. Just a strong pull. Which she then vocalized.

She shook her head, gazing the bar as well before looking back to him. "Just a pull," she replied, shrugging. "No distinct direction, at least not yet." She sighed, then felt at ease enough to pull out a few of the photographs. Most were of the missing woman on stage, and it was obvious now that where she sat reflected the exact angle at which the photos were taken.

pentupdragon - December 25, 2005 07:35 AM (GMT)
Well, well, well. Little miss Audrey Leah Psychic was working on the very case that Kali had been called on. Wasn't that... intriguing.

Taking the photos from her and studying them for a moment, he set them on the table and tapped them with his middle finger. "These are... of the woman that you're looking for?"

It was an obvious question, with an obvious answer, but he had to make sure.

Perhaps she could help him, or, if he played his cards the right way, perhaps she could help him while thinking that he was helping her.

District83 - December 26, 2005 02:44 AM (GMT)
She nodded, fanning them out a bit in front of her. "Mmhmm," she replied, affirming the nod in vocal form. "Just a few weeks in, not many leads at all."

She hesitated, knowing that telling outsiders about cases was a big no-no. Kali seemed trustworthy, but the fact remained that she'd only met him once and didn't know him at all.

She shrugged, and insteand concentrated on looking at the photos, glancing up at the stage occasionally. She was wriggling in her seat, rising up and straightening her posture, until she finally had to tuck her legs beneath her.

There. That was the proper angle.

Kali couldn't help but notice that she was wriggling around, and he realized quickly that she was trying to get the same angle that the pictures showed. Raising his eyebrow and leaning back in his seat, he watched until she got into the right position. She was twisted quite awkwardly, and he couldn't help but point that fact out.

"Why would someone take the pictures from that angle? It's such an awkward angle to look at..."

He took a long sip of his drink, turning to look at the stage as she was. He figured that she, knowing something about the case, might be able to help him out.

District83 - January 24, 2006 03:18 AM (GMT)
Leah shot a glare at him, then gestured to her own body. "Maybe an awkward angle for someone like me," she stated, nodding, "but for someone much taller? Not awkward in the least."

She was much higher than usual, almost with her knees in the booth as she tried to look at the stage.

Whether or not she felt easy sitting here with Kali, she wasn't sure. But she was still doing her work, talking idly with him, and drinking slowly. So maybe it wasn't too terrible?

pentupdragon - January 24, 2006 03:29 AM (GMT)
Looking slightly amused at the fact that she was now twisted and sitting quite oddly, Kali raised an eyebrow. "Does it help?" He meant, did it help that she was in the same position that the person who'd taken the pictures had been in. She intrigued him, she who was Psychic but didn't honestly realize it, at least not to the extent that she could have.

Gesturing to the stage, he added, "Feeling anything now that you're looking at it the way that the photographer did?"

He still couldn't get over the fact that she worked for the police. He wasn't surprised that they'd use her that way, but the audacity that they had, to use her psychic abilities while complaining about the Innish-- that amazed him.

He always wondered how the Unnish did it, honestly. How they lived with themselves, without knowing about the different species and magicks.

District83 - January 24, 2006 03:31 AM (GMT)
Leah frowned, her nose wrinkled slightly.

"No, no not really," she replied, sighing. She plopped back down and studied the pictures, trying her absolute damnedest to get a good feel, a good grab on an emotion, a connection, *something*.

Deciding that the problem was, in fact, not her, she looked back up at Kali.

"You're blocking me," she said, matter-of-factly.

Which made sense. He was distracting.
