Title: it brings out the best in the worst

Daniel entered the firmiluar book store. He'd spent a lot of time in the shop since his Junior year in high school, always studying vigorously, tediously, in college for his assignments. And even now, a man with two of his own well developed, carefully built businesses, a law firm and somthing else. Daniel continued to come to Jacobson's because it contained books from the three catagories that he dabbled in. Magic, Death, and Law. Law particuarily had a good variety and a large section.

Daniel was dressed for the on-setting Autumn, wearing a pair of dark kahki pants and a dark green button down shirt, a brown duster hanging finely from his shoulders. The brown of his jacket pulled the outfit togather and made the flecks of brown in his gray eyes stand out. Beneath that duster he wore carefully concealed, two weapons, a .27 Glock and a Magnum, the magnum was illegal to own but the glock was not. He had a carry permit to allow him to carry concealed. But it makes the Magnum no less illegal.

He carried a hard leather breif case to the back of the shop and set it on a desk, opening it and removings a pad of yellow paper, a pen, and a lap top. Daniel opened the laptop, turned on the power, but didn't log on as he walked away to the Law section of the shop. He's handsom and could pass for 21 rather then his 31 years. He runs two fingers over the spins of the books, searching and humming a soft tune. Daniel does not hum. So the fact that he is is a particuarily good sign and means he's in good nature today. Somthing about Autumn brings out the best in him.

Jacobson's counts as Violet's second home, if you count her dorm room as her first.
As most of her waking hours are spent reading, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

The girl was sitting on the floor, in the nook made by a bookcase that hadn't been pushed all the way to the wall. This happened to be one of the corners in the middle of the bookshop, so light was a bit scarce. What little light there was had a yellow tinge to it, like old newspapers.
Violet was wearing a long sweater that went down to mid-thigh, and a corduroy skirt that was only a few inches longer. Her knees were drawn up and her current book was settled on them - fairly close to her face, which probably can't be very good for her eyes.

"The gods of this world are all around us, inhabiting our spirits and" - ... no, not this one either. You'd think at least one of these people would know what they're talking about, instead of rambling on in New-Age babble...not that I'd know the difference...

Shit.

Her latest encounter with a magical being (a goddess, no less) had been the one to tip things a bit. Up until then, Violet had thought there wasn't any chance of more magical intrusions in her life. She'd gone for years without knowing anything of that sort existed.
But that was then, and this is now.
And if she's going to have to deal with this crap, she's going to be prepared.

Just as soon as she finds the right book.

His wandering took him nearly to her, his fingertips making an invisable trail over all of the books spines. Touching the book spines in his office could make some of those books actually sigh and attempt to worm out of their places to follow the finger. Nusances, unfortunatly, they held some of the most foolproof spells he's come across. Especially for one in his line of..ehem...business.

He paused upon reaching the end of the lane, two books safely tucked between his hand and his thigh, fingers clawed around the spine of the book in a relaxed fashion. The light was musky and he actually glanced around the area, looking for any source of the dull light in that corner. He stopped humming.

"It's much more comfortable, and the lighting is better at a table." A stray comment. What? Socializing? Daniel must be in a very good mood.

The girl set her current book down on the floor (rather than just toss it across the room in frustration) and selected another from the small stack of five or six other ragged, dusty tomes. She'd just opened it, releasing a puff of dust and an odd acrid scent, when Daniel spoke. Not certain that the man was talking to her (even though there was no one else around for him to be talking to), Violet glanced hesitantly at him. She still couldn't be sure..., but it couldn't really hurt to answer.

"Um... yeah. Yeah, probably," she said, feigning a smile. "But it's quieter down here."
Not that anyone could ever say that any section of the bookshop was actually noisy.

"Who would have thought that a dark, empty corner would be so quiet." So he's a little sarcastic, but he's still talking at all, which means he's still in a very good mood. A charming smile cracked one corner of his lip, dimpling, the family smile. His sister had it too, not that either of them took pride in inheriting that smile from their parents.

"Really, the lighting is going to ruin your eyesight." He touched the reading glasses he had settled in pocket of the duster. "College years and dark corridors taught me that one."

He should have believed people when they warned him but no, he was now doomed to wear reading glasses for forever.

Violet blinked mildly up at him, then turned back to her book, mumbling, "I'll learn the hard way, then. Bet I'd look good in glasses,... and there's always contact lenses. Laser surgery. Whatever."

She's trying to be funny.
She is failing miserably.

The Ultimate Lurker - November 8, 2005 09:51 PM (GMT)
He lets her know she's failing miserably by not laughing. In fact, he lets his smile just slide away as well. Your that unfunny. He hovered for just a moment, one slender eyebrow raised up into an arch, and then turned on his heels. "Have it your way then," and he's moving slowly back down the isle, two fingers tracing the spines of books.

"Oh, I will."

And she's immersed in a book again, curled up in her dark, quiet corner that wil probably take its toll on her eyesight. She doesn't make an attempt to get the man to stay - she hadn't really appreciated what she now termed as an 'intrusion' in the first place.
