Title: Mrs. Manners' RP Etiquette
Description: How NOT to face Jack's wrath!
Paris - December 14, 2003 12:32 AM (GMT)
Well I know two, so everyone else who has a certain RP etiquette statement that everyone else needs to know, post it here! Please...
Very well, Mrs. Manners says...
Don't eat the boards, god knows I've done it (God being Jack). It's usually because we're used the Neopets speed typing and response... Not anymore, no need for speed.
What is eating boards? Well for example: If three people are in a roleplay and if only two people are online and they get bored so they roleplay on the same board leaving the other character to do absolutely nothing (I'm talking cardboard cut out here) that is eating the board. It no fun for that third person to come and find that he/she missed out on all the action. (Sorry bout that Left Arm)
How to avoid eating boards. Start a new RP with that person on a different board. Set it up by PM, have one of you start it and go nuts. Then you don't have to worry about that third or forth person until they get back. Also it's a good way to practice and develop characters with two person RPs.
Don't Be a Complete Know-it-all I know, I know, we all want to be on top of the action with extra senses and stuff but there are some people who want to be mysterious. If your character can sense auras and sniff out classes you gotta make mistakes, have something it doesn't work with or make it not perfect. Be oblivious, be so wonderfully ignorant! That's what you want other people to be towards your character right? Surprise and mystery is way more fun then "la, la, la, hey I know what you are, you're an innish... I am too! Isn't that great? Hey where are you going? Wait for me, we gotta be friends cause I'm innish tooo!!!"
Note: Innish people may be innish without magic... So how can you sense that?
Ok that's all I've got, your turn!

If some people have been roleplaying in a board for a long time, do not join unless asked to.
Likely, these people are deeply involved in plot by this time, so it's rude to interrupt and try to add your character to the mix if they didn't ask you to. For example, if one character is killing another, and they are on their fifth page of posts, it's a bad idea to walk in with a "Sally wanders along the forst path. She hears some noises and decides to investigate..." or whatever the case might be.
I would also like to re-iterate the "Don't be a know-it-all" point above. If I see you doing this, I will smack your ass down, 'scuse my french. ^_^ It is godmoding and Not Allowed, unless you have a really good excuse. (If someone does this, just tell me so I can speak to them about it.)
Skirr - December 14, 2003 01:09 AM (GMT)
Gah! I hate both of those so much! Paris, you are probally talking about the same board I got eaten off... So I feel your pain. Also, about the knowing everything:
If someone SAYS it, then you KNOW it. If they post it but don't mention their character showing it, then YOU DON'T KNOW. If I said, "The fifteen year old was sad, but his expression showed nothing." then you wouldn't reply, "I am sorry, poor teenager... What is wrong?" because that kills the plot, if any, behind the starting persons reasons. Also, PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS. I said, "The boy sat in the miday sun" and someone replied, "Are you lost? What are you doing out so late?" The lost part got a topic going, but it just made them look stupid otherwise.
So two things: 1) SAYS=KNOWS! 2) PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL!
I am done...

Don't take it personally if a character hates the bejeezus out of your character. Seriously. Your character's probably annoying. Most of them are to certain types of people. And, hell, it's probably nothing personal against you. I have a bunch of characters that have all taken out war quests on characters whose muns I didn't have a thing against. If your character is annoying my character, he will yell at you. So will most of the rest of 'em. Don't be a whiny brat and be all "Ooo noo! You're a MEANIE!" That's just lame, and will make me want to strangle you through your monitor.
Ha. I'm in a bad mood. 'scuse me while I go smite someone.
Kitty - December 14, 2003 08:38 PM (GMT)
*snugs glowstick's sig..*to true.. on both the sig and what was said

Hee. But it was true - everyone does want to kill Grace. S'kind of cute.
"Hi! I'm Grace! AAH ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT RUN AWAY"
She's prob'ly the only character to get a designated Attempted Killer, too.
Lady Delirium - December 17, 2003 01:18 AM (GMT)
Two, she currently has TWO.... And Mina killed Kenna... WHY ARE MY CHARACTERS SO KILLABLE?????
Chibirusia - December 23, 2003 11:05 PM (GMT)
Chibi's RP pet peeve:
MARY-SUES
I HATE mary-sues!
If I see one more blond, blue eyed girl that can dance with animals, has a sprit that is holy and white and pure as snow, and is more beautyful than love and lust herself, AND is running away from some unknowed bad guy becuase they did something good and the bad-guy-person is evil and just didnt like it....
I WILL KILL SOMETHING.

=hopes it's not too late=
Don't keep something from a fellow roleplayer if their character SHOULD know it. If you're roleplaying with someone, and you somehow introduce something to the roleplay that they should recognize/know about, tell them about it. For example, if your character is holding up an ancient relic to a history professer, and you don't tell their roleplayer what it is, you're making their character seem stupid, not to mention giving the roleplayer Hell trying to remedy the situation. This has happened to me too many times to count. If someones character SHOULD know about something, tell their roleplayer that, and don't make them jump through your hoops to avoid complete stupidity on the part of their character, or even issues with their powers, such as walking with them by a place with some kind of aura that's very powerful. If their character should have sensed it... well, the roleplayer will have some serious dificulty explaining why they didn't, and even have to make permanent changes to their character. Even if their character shouldn't know ABOUT it, they may be affected by it somehow. Stick on the safe side, and tell the roleplayer. Please?

Eh... I had someone do that to me awhile ago, and I just remembered now, it was sooooooo bloody annoying. Grrrr... x__X
||| - June 11, 2004 03:27 PM (GMT)
Yeah. If I'm playing with an empath or telepath, for example, I'll talk more about my character's feelings or thought.
Really, it's communication. Communication and working together so everyone has fun/stays true to character/etc.

Hee... 'S a teensy bit off topic, 'cuz I don't believe we COULD 'ave any 'ere, (is 'aving fun with 'er 'postrophe) but I absolutely despise the warrior women...'pecially on the Medieval-type rps.
I'm currently writing a satirical short story about a princess who DOESN'T want to go out and kill people and rather enjoys sitting a home reading books and sewing.
Perfect princesses are annoying enough...but when they like to kill people with their abnormally, impossible to lift broadswords and; they enjoy wearing black leather and chainmail that HAS to be uncomfortable for a guy, and even more for a girl with a tiny waist and a rather heavy upper torso.. That's just frighteningly evil.
Guess it's a bit like the Mary-Sue thing, 'cept warrior-style.
Adrian Spearmint - June 17, 2004 11:57 PM (GMT)
I'm grudgingly prepared to overlook 'postrophe but I'm afraid 'pecially simply doesn't cut it. 'specially, please. That goes for the rest of you too. Repeat offenders shall be punished to the full extend of the law.

--shuffles feet cautiously then falls at his toes, in tears, mind you-- I'm so SOWWY!!!!!! --sob sob, cry cry, weep weep, etcetera etcetera--
Anargyros - June 23, 2004 11:43 PM (GMT)
Also, and this one doesn't so much apply here as it does in RP organizations that tend to have RPs of four or more, but it's selfish to refuse to initiate contact with other characters. Sure, sullen, sulky and uncommunicative characters are fun -- everybody loves to play them! -- but it's a bit of a pain when four people are doing it, all in the same scene, so you get thirty consecutive posts of "Mitzi took a deep swig of her cosmo and stared at the bar with loathing." RPs only work when one is doing one's best to take care of the other RPers, just ask Keith Johnstone.
Don't be a schmuck! Initiate the interpersonal contact! Or all the former improvisors who've turned to RP will have to beat the hell out of you.

People should also try to significantly separate paragraphs. This is especially important when a post is on the long side.
It gets really difficult to read a post if a person doesn't make a distinction when they type things out. It's very easy to lose one's place in a whole jumble of letters and words if there isn't the occasional space between the lines. It gets really frustrating if you're reading through something and you lose your place.
I know people(myself included, at times) who will ignore something altogether if it isn't easy enough to read. This leaves a lot of good writers in the dust because some people might not want to take the time to sift through it all. Either that, or it gives them a headache.
Alright, so, I've put my two cents in...
||| - July 24, 2004 08:00 PM (GMT)
That's a really good point-- more of a writing tip, but still a good one. Paragraphs make -anything- easier to read... and give the thing definition. S'just good writing to use 'em. ^^
