Title: Ancient Memories
Description: -for Kerri-

Lying up in bed after supper, Callie was staring at the ceiling. She’d been quite tired today for some reason and so taking an afternoon nap was sounding pretty good. Charlie’s help with changing nightmares was allowing her to get more sleep than she used to which was good. Slowly she drifted off to sleep.

A young girl around the age of nine was crouching down inside a rackety looking wooden closet and peeking through the crack. In her limited vision she could see a dim candle lit room where a man around the age of thirty lay in a bed. The room looked ancient and the soft rushing of an ocean tide could be heard just outside. Moonlight shone in through the one window helping light the room a bit more.

The man was sweating profusely and breathing heavily. He’d come down with a horrible sickness and no doctor could cure him as they were not permitted into the home. A woman that looked to be around the same age as the man was holding his hand and sitting next to him on the bed. Her brows were furrowed and would make anyone do a double take as in that instance she looked almost exactly like Callie except for her hair was to her waist and brown.

The girl was watching silently.

This was not where charlie had meant to wind up. He'd meant to find Callie. Strange. He willed himself out of the fringes of the dream. Then he tried what he'd originally set out to do again, and again, and again.....It seemed he was meant to be here then, and who was he to argue with the fickle whims of the dream planes. He remained intangible to observe.

(Boring, but it's what I could come up with....cease pouting)

Indeed the little girl was hardly recognizable as Callie. Nobody saw her grow up except for her mother and no pictures of her as a child were ever taken since cameras were not around and there was no way they were going to pay for a portrait to be drawn.

Leaning up against the closet too much the doors opened and out fell the girl onto the creaking wooden floor. The woman sitting on the bed turned to see her.

”Calypso leave the room.” The woman told her in a stern yet gentle voice. The girl got up at patted dirt off her holey brown dress, a rope tied around her waist to act as a belt to keep it from off the ground.

”No she can stay.” The man said and then patted the bed beside him for her to come here. She looked to the woman for a moment for confirmation that it was alright and when she nodded, the girl slowly walked back to the bed and sat down on it.

”Are you going to be alright Edward?” The girl’s brows furrowed as she held his hand. She frowned even further when he shook his head no.

”Little brother, don’t leave me.” She was starting to cry now. It was awkward hearing it come from the child that the older man was considered her ‘little brother’. But he was. He’d been born after her however aged the same as any normal human since he was not a girl.

”I don’t think I’m considered your little brother anymore Calypso.” He reached up to wipe the tears from her cheek though it returned to his side rather quickly. He was extremely tired and weak. His breathing was erratic and held a high fever. Edward turned to the other woman who was, of course, his mother and Callies. The wretched woman that had tortured Callie for the past 100 years. She looked like a descent mother in this memory which of course she was for the most part at the time. ”Could you leave us alone for a minute?” It was a request not a command; however she nodded and reluctantly left the room before kissing him on the forehead.

”Calypso. Go over to the closet and grab my coat.” She looked at him for a moment before heading over and pulling out none other than the black leather jacket that Callie always had kept with her. Sitting back down on the bed she draped it over his legs.

”Why do you want it?” The little girl commented. It hardly seemed like he could get out anytime soon for he was on his death bed.

”I know mother is going to get rid of all my things when I’m….well when I’m no longer around. I also know that you have always liked this coat more than the others I’ve had.” The little girl just blinked in puzzlement. ”When you get old enough you’ll finally be able to wear it rather than it dragging behind you all the time.” He said chuckling which quickly turned into a horrendous cough.

”Don’t talk it’ll only make it worse faster.” She pleaded with him, but he only shook his head after the coughing finally ceased.

”It doesn’t matter anymore now.” He spit out on a handkerchief what he’d just coughed up which was definitely blood.

”I don’t understand what you’re trying to say.” Confusion was definitely evident on her face.

”What I’m saying is don’t let go of it. Tell mother I gave it to you and no matter what don’t let her take it from you. That way you’ll always have something to remember me by.” He brought a weary hand up to her face and caressed it gently wiping away more tears that were starting to fall from the girl. ”Come here and give me a hug before I call mother back in. It’s time for you to go to bed anyways.” She leaned over and gave him a hug, remaining there for several minutes before he finally told her she needed to go to bed. Grabbing the coat off the bed, their mother came back in at that time. The man told her that Callie could keep the jacket and to please not take it from her. Reluctantly the woman respected his request and would never try and take it from her; however she did tell her to keep it out of her sight eventually, not wanting to see it anymore.

However she didn’t go to bed, but instead stood right outside the battered door and listened a little while longer as she held her brother’s jacket closely to her chest.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 04:10 AM (GMT)
Strange, she must be dreaming a memory. Well at least the stories of siren's eating their male young weren't true.....but why had she given him the coat.....he didn't need anything to remember her by, he could visit her here afterall. Perhaps it was more for George?

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 04:22 AM (GMT)
When she heard someone walking towards the door she quickly got up and walked down the hallway and darted into her room, falling onto the bed quickly and closing her eyes. A figure stood in the doorway for a moment. Her mother quietly walked over and kissed her on the forehead before heading back out into the hallway and closing her door behind her.

As soon as the door was shut she turned to look at it before sitting up in bed. Fingers ran over the jacket that still smelled like him. Quietly she put it away in a drawer and then got under then got back in bed just staring at the wooden ceiling. Eyes watched a spider crawl around for some time before falling asleep.

The dream sequence shifts to the next morning where the girl is being comforted by her mother as they sat on her bed. Callie was crying horribly into her mother’s chest with the news that her brother had died during the night.

Dream shifted again to where she’s sitting on the beach, but definitely not the Bayfield beaches. The water is clearer and more turquoise shaded. Feet are squished into the sand as she looks out over the water, the breeze blowing her hair out of her face. A ship not far out with white sails continued on its way to the main island. Ships hardly ever docked on the island where she lived.

A girl stood there watching the young girl sitting on the beach. It was now day Callie and her face was saddened as she looked at her younger self. This memory had not entered her dreams in a long time. She stood there for a while watching it before she finally used Charlie’s teachings to shift the landscapes, taking the memory away and a forest setting appear as she sat down on the grass, leaning against a tree and wrapping her arms around her knees as they were brought up to her chest.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 04:31 AM (GMT)
Ah now things were making a bit more sense, she was practicing sifting through her memories.

"I was looking for you." Charlie said stepping out ot the trees.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 03:08 PM (GMT)
Callie looked up to see Charlie stepping out from behind the trees. A smile was expressed on her face.

”You were? Why’s that?” She patted the ground beside her if he wanted to sit down as well.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 06:22 PM (GMT)
He did sit. "Just checking up, wasn't sure, how you've been sleeping." He told her softly taking her hand.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 07:24 PM (GMT)
”Better than I used to. I don’t have control over how they start out, but I’ve been getting better at changing them when I want to. Of course it’s harder the more frightening the images are.” She really had to focus when something horrible was occurring. Most often the dreams started out quite violent, but this one was a relatively happy memory besides the death of her brother.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 07:28 PM (GMT)
"That will get easier, you'r mind will need time though, time to ger used to realizing it's transitioning into dream state, the longer you are off all the drugs you were being dosed with the easier that should become." he told her.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 07:32 PM (GMT)
”I hope so.” She said squeezing his hand gently. ”So how much of that dream did you see?” Callie was interested to know.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 07:37 PM (GMT)
"Well where did you start out and I'll tell you if I missed or not." he answered.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 07:39 PM (GMT)
”It started with me hiding in the closet. I wasn’t sure if my mother wanted me to be in there or not. But….I just couldn’t go to bed without seeing him.” She sighed and looked away from Charlie and at the trees that surrounded them.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 07:42 PM (GMT)
"I saw most of it then, kept trying to leave and reorient though, at first I though I kept winding up in someone else's dream, took a bit to figure out it was a memeory." Charlie told her.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 07:46 PM (GMT)
She laughed as he said he kept trying to leave. ”Yeah. I usually don’t have many dreams of when I was little. They are pretty scarce. Most of them….well, you know what most of them are about.”

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 07:52 PM (GMT)
He nodded. "How are things?" He asked her.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 08:04 PM (GMT)
”Good. How have you been doing?” This time in her dreams was probably the only times she really got to see Charlie and talk with him for a while. It was really nice.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 08:13 PM (GMT)
"Same old thing, work and sleep, drudgeing through dream, and other than that nothing new. Still fixing that upright piano." he says. He makes no mention of his demon research there are some things Callie doesn't need to know after all. In fact no one needs to know them except for George and Charlie.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 08:16 PM (GMT)
”How’s the piano coming then?” She’s looking back at him now instead of eyes wandering around the forest.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 08:20 PM (GMT)
"We've manged to track down replacement keys for the missing or broken ones. Got the whole chasis stripped, put new coasters on it, ordered new pedals, so it's coming. " He said. "I went and bought new slippers, George even wore them out of the store."

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 08:23 PM (GMT)
”Really? I can’t believe he did that.” She said laughing. George never did like the ducky slippers for some reason. It surprised her. ”Yours stay right next to my bed. Maybe that’s why I’ve been sleeping better.” Once again a smile was offered on her face as she looked at Charlie.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 08:43 PM (GMT)
"You didn't believe me about their special powers? Have I ever lied to you?" He has but she can't know he has, the one lie, no Callie you didn't kill your mum, she died in the hospital.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 09:38 PM (GMT)
”No you haven’t.” She was very trusting which was another thing that could get her into trouble if she ran into the wrong person.

”How’s Mr. Jenkins doing? And George?”

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 09:41 PM (GMT)
"They miss you, you should visit Mr. J sometime. He didn't really get to see you last time you know." Charlie pointed out.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 09:43 PM (GMT)
”I’m sorry. I didn’t want to keep Cecily all day though. Hopefully I’ll come back by soon. Maybe tomorrow I’ll come in with Erik as he goes to work and stop by for the day.” She hoped she could. It would be nice to spend a whole day with him again.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 09:45 PM (GMT)
"That would be nice."It's good she mentioned it, he could hide all the demonology books before she came over.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 10:02 PM (GMT)
”It would.” She stretched out her legs against the grass as they were cramping in the position she was currently sitting.

”Charlie. Do you understand from that memory why I gave you the jacket?” It was bugging her curiosity to know if he had.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 10:07 PM (GMT)
"Uhm to be honest, not completely, I mean I kinda thought it was to remember you by, but I still see you all the time, and to be honest you'll likely outlive me." He told Callie.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 10:16 PM (GMT)
”I gave it to you, because it belonged to my brother. And you remind me of him in more ways than one. Both of you took care of me and were there for me when I needed it most. I feel like you should have it.” She hoped that made sense to him.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 10:43 PM (GMT)
"Oh" he said, and this being a dream the little light bulb appeared over his head.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 11:26 PM (GMT)
She laughed at the appearance of the little light bulb. ”I take it you understand now.”

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 11:37 PM (GMT)
Charlie looked up and smiled. "Yeah." he said. he pulled down the lightbulb, twisted the bottom of of it and fire flies streamed out. He laughed. Then the lightbulb was gone.

foreverchanging - August 17, 2005 11:46 PM (GMT)
She watched the fire flies fly off into the forest and out of sight. Using Charlie’s teachings she thought about a cat and out popped one from behind a tree which proceeded to trot over to her and lay down in her lap, curling up and purring. She petted the black cat gently as she looked down at it.

”I’ve always wanted a cat. They’re so pretty.” She stated to nobody in particular as she looked down at it.

K-Squared - August 17, 2005 11:50 PM (GMT)
"Well that looks like a cat to me."he teased. He reached over and scratched it's head. It purred and emitted satisfied rumbling.

foreverchanging - August 18, 2005 12:03 AM (GMT)
”You know what I mean.” She stuck her tongue out at him. ”I mean a real one not one in my dreams. But oh well. One can’t have everything now can they?”

K-Squared - August 18, 2005 12:05 AM (GMT)
"Probably not all at once at any rate." Charlie answered amused. "I have to go soon, I'm glad you're getting more control." He told her.

foreverchanging - August 18, 2005 01:13 AM (GMT)
”Couldn’t have done it without you.” She said smiling as she looked back up at him from the cat. ”I’ll see you tomorrow hopefully.”

K-Squared - August 18, 2005 01:34 AM (GMT)
"I hope so. Love you. Going now." he said softly before fading out.

foreverchanging - August 18, 2005 01:38 AM (GMT)
”Love you to.” And with that she watched him fade out of her dreams.
