Title: Cherry Garcia and the Siren
Description: Lost Cries
CryingTaxi - August 14, 2005 11:48 PM (GMT)
Serenity O Smith stood in her living room with only a white tank top and a pair of boxers to protect what little modesty Karen had been able to instill in her. The brunette siren ate a pint of Cherry Garcia as she moped up the stairs. The plastic spoon she consumed it with had been a gift from the nice man at the gas station where she'd bought her yummy, Garcia. He'd given her the spoon and her Iced Cream, when she gave him her green paper, that man had thought the money with the fives on it was equal to her pink stuff. My these new humans were odd.
The upstairs held only her bedroom and her bathroom, both of which had windows that looked through the foliage around them and out onto the bay. Serenity sat in the window seat looking out over the bay as she completed her dinner of Cherry Garcia. She was truly sad that Karen was gone. It broke her heart to think that that the poor lady who'd helped her in New York would never get to live in this house she'd bought. Stupid, grey dog-box, she'd told Karen it would eat them.
Serenity sat steaming for a moment, before she really sensed the soft melodies floating to her. The whales sung out there, the songs caught a part of her and rung it, the echoing calls so familiar she was almost obliged to call back. It'd been so long since she'd heard the whales, Karen hadn't taken her to the ocean in New York.
The brunette pushed open the windows and scaled out onto the trellis that adorned either side of her window, the roof was easy to grab from there and Serenity crawled up the shingles easily. The shallow pitch of the roof made her visible to all who lived on the waterfront road with her, they would see her lengthy waves, her petite figure, and the way her arms wrapped around her legs sullenly. They wouldn't see her sea-green eyes sparkle at her bay, or the heart-shaped face that was flooded with salty tears, but they would all know that it was those pale rose lips that began her song.
Though truly a song must have words, Serenity's "melody" did not. It was a wordless wail that wound it's way into a soul, bringing tears to the eyes of the woman watering her grass behind the sorrowful siren. It was not the powerful cries that had once driven sailors mad in the Mediterranian, nor the whispers that had pulled children from their sleep in Ireland and Scotland. Merely an old thing that missed her friend, her poor mentor, her Karen.
K-Squared - August 15, 2005 04:55 AM (GMT)
Sinister has been walking a long time. He had not wanted to bother his blind friend Em, not to mention the man had been somewhat distant since his release from the hospital.
Today there were no classes to occupy Sin, nothing of any importance at all really, until 9 pm at night, when he must take Shelly's phone call check-in.
The little cherubic boy walks barefooted in the sand. He still loves the way it squishes between his toes. In one hand he carries his sandals, the other a bottle of water. The waves in the bay crash and pound rather loudly today.
He is merely walking along lost in thought when he hears that sound....what is that sound? It's so sad.
CryingTaxi - August 16, 2005 06:16 PM (GMT)
Serenity's ghostly song carried on for several minutes, her voice had not been used of late and it ached her to sing for long. She closed her eys and let the last notes of her melody escape from her thin throat.
She wrapped her arms around her legs and let her head rest on her knees. Had it heart this much when Chorus had been killed? Or when Symphony had killed herself after her husbands death? Why should this one woman hurt her so? Her voice squeaked in another little cry, listening to the whales sing back to her.
She lifted her tear-stained face, and looked down at the bay. Someone watched her from the beach, it was a young person. She smiled, she wanted to wave, but she knew the children in the newest York didn't like people waving to them.
K-Squared - August 16, 2005 06:32 PM (GMT)
After a time he does locate the source of the sound. Now how had that woman gotten up there? Furthermore, how had she been able to produce such a series of algorythyms, many of the sound groupings she'd produced were not capable of being produced by human vocal cords. (poor unnish boy)
Of coarse the tune had evoked sadness, terrible aching sadness. For the first time in a very long time he had thought of the day his mother never came home.
From the beach he cannot see her smile, or her, tears. It is likely she cannot see the boy's tears either. Sinister however is an endlessly friendly little boy, he hasn't had that much contact with the outside world. So he does wave, having no thought for there to be anything wrong with him doing so. Such is the nature of innoncence.
CryingTaxi - August 17, 2005 12:03 AM (GMT)
Serenity waved back, cheerful there was a friendly person here. She hadn't communicated with many people here in Bayfield, it was new and she would rather be around only the people she had to here in Bayfield.
Serenity slid down her roof, letting her legs hang over the side of the roof closest to the bay. Her bare legs were tanned and muscular, despite her lack of exercise and recent diet of iced cream and gas station food. She let herself fall the short six feet from her roof to the small window garden below, she kept her balance by clutching to the trellis with her left hand.
She looked down to the boy who stood only down the hill from her two story house, he seemed nice enough. She looked at the trellis beside her, trying to decide if she could scale down the thing then jump to the gutter drain that ran down the side of the building.
K-Squared - August 17, 2005 12:37 AM (GMT)
She returned his wave.
He watched her climb down very nimbly. At least that explained how she had gotten up there. Unusual behavior foran adult, but not completely strange. She seemed to be very dexterous. He wasn't sure what she was going to do next. He watched rather curiously in wonder, he's never seen an accrobatic exihibtion of any sort before.
CryingTaxi - August 17, 2005 12:51 AM (GMT)
From her perch on the window garden Serenity threw herself over onto the trellis. Her agile body carried her down the wall to the garden, where she crawled out of the hedge that surronded the backside of the house.
Brushing herself off Serenity barefooted it over to where the boy was, her momentum carried her down the hill, aided by her nimble feet. She stopped and ducked behind a tree then looked from the other side towards the boy smiling foolishly.
Her brown hair now carried a few stray branches from her struggle with the hedge, and the slight humidity of the day made the luscious waves curl and frizz slightly.
K-Squared - August 17, 2005 01:00 AM (GMT)
Her behavior does seem a bit silly to Sinister. He smiles though. He has since brushed away his tears from the song. Still it had been fascinating to watch, almost like Hollywood movie stunts.
"Hello there." he said warmly, though not too loud.
CryingTaxi - August 17, 2005 01:07 AM (GMT)
Serenity looked at him startled he'd talked to her, then signed the word for hello. She grinned, and in one quick movement she stepped out from behind the tree and waved at him.
Serenity's happiness knew no bounds, she was a people-siren, make no false impressions. She enjoyed being around new people, and learning these modern ways.
K-Squared - August 17, 2005 01:14 AM (GMT)
"Sign language, I don't know it, but it seems you can understand me well enough." It occured to him she must have been listening to whatever that sad music had been. She knew sign language, and she seemed to be able to hear him. this led him to think she was mute.
She certainly seemed chipper enough. "Can you write?" he asked her.
CryingTaxi - August 17, 2005 01:31 AM (GMT)
She looked at him and tilted her head, this silly boy obviously didn't know her sign language.
When she heard the word write her head shook up and down with her excitement. She had learned to write at the church in the New York, she picked up a stick and wrote Hello into the sand on the beach.
She jumped back letting him see her masterpiece, Serenity held the stick with both hands as though it might jump away, and her constant rocking on the balls of her feet seemed to point out that it was trying it's hardest.
K-Squared - August 17, 2005 03:28 AM (GMT)
"Ah yes I see. Well I'm Sin, What's your name, can you write it?" he asked, his voice is warm but patient. She seems very excitable. Perhaps she doesn't get out much either.
CryingTaxi - August 17, 2005 04:32 PM (GMT)
Serenity brushed her previous words out with her foot, and set to spelling her name. She quickly scribbled her name into the moist sand, Serenity.
Her name had been hers since the beginning, she had been the calm benevolent sister, if any of them had had a benevolent bone in their body at that point.
K-Squared - August 17, 2005 06:26 PM (GMT)
"Serenity," he both said and read it. "That's a lovely name." he told her looking most serious as he said this for such a youngster. "Did you want to walk with me for a while? I was just walking and listening to the waves. "
CryingTaxi - August 18, 2005 03:37 AM (GMT)
Serenity nodded and began skipping down the beach, letting the waves tease her feet with every step. She looked out at the water, several small boats floated by three of them had billowing white sails that crackled and blew in the uneasy winds over the bay. She stopped in a jumping step and waved to them, then hurried along the beach, skipping cheerfully.
K-Squared - August 18, 2005 03:58 AM (GMT)
Sinister just walked along fascinated with her antics. He got the impression this woman was not from around here. He sipped at his bottled water and walked in the edge of teh water lettign the ocean gently lap at his feet. He wondered what the folks on the boat made of his cheerful new aquaintance, who almost seemed to be out for a frollic.
CryingTaxi - August 18, 2005 04:07 AM (GMT)
Watching the boats made Serenity remember older times when she'd jumped from rock to rock calling to sailors, she closed her eyes cheerfully and skipped a few steps opening her eyes just in time to leap over a green glass bottle in her way. She had leaped over the thing like a startled cat and crouched on all fours on the opposite side watching it as though it were some kind of evil monster. She looked at her new friend then stood up indignantly, It hadn't scared her at all. She'd known it was just a bottle.
K-Squared - August 18, 2005 04:15 AM (GMT)
He watched her reaction to the bottle. She was definitely not from around here. He picked up the bottle and carried it to one of the trashcans near the board walk. Then he walked back to her. He didn't really fault her reaction, litter could be disturbing.
CryingTaxi - August 18, 2005 04:25 AM (GMT)
Serenity walked along the beach for a little while longer, only a few steps ahead of the boy. She liked this boy he was friendly and could be quiet, not like the boys she'd met in the New York. They were idiots, with their gaudy jewelry and stupid words like 'gangsta' and 'braud', She was not broad, she was very slender.
Serenity paused and turned around with a jump to look at Sin, she smiled the pointed out at the bay. Signing the word Swim.
K-Squared - August 18, 2005 04:31 AM (GMT)
He looked at her with a reserved smile. "You want to go out into the water then? I suppose, so long as I'm not swimming alone it's alright to." he said. He did enjoy swimming, it was very relaxing, especially in the ocean for some reason. Em wasn't quite up to going swimming with him yet, so he hadn't been in a while.
CryingTaxi - August 18, 2005 04:37 AM (GMT)
Serenity nodded and smiled at him calmly, then in a few running steps she dived into the bay, disappearing under the green-blue surface. She was in her element in the water, her entire body seemed to streamline when she was in the ocean.
She was a good 53 feet out into the bay when she came up for air. She burst through the surface and shook her head, like a wet dog.
K-Squared - August 18, 2005 04:46 AM (GMT)
Sinister simply waded out till he ws deep enough to swim along the surface. Then he swam out towards her. He wasn't as graceful as her, but he wasn't too ungainly for a pudgy boy either. It didn't take him too long to swim out, though he was a bit nervous, he didn't usually go so deep.
CryingTaxi - August 18, 2005 04:51 AM (GMT)
Serenity waited for him then dived again, she stayed under the surface for about three minutes before she resurfaced. She brought with her a small golden metal object, to her curious eyes it was some great treasure. In all truths she knew it was only a compass, but it excited her enough for her to swim violently back to shore after showing it briefly to Sin.
K-Squared - August 18, 2005 04:58 AM (GMT)
He swam halfway back and then let the waves carry him into the shallows. After he was only chest deep he waded in to see what new antics Serenity would be up to.
CryingTaxi - August 18, 2005 05:04 AM (GMT)
Serenity sat on the sandy beach and held the antique compass upside down, she watched the needle waver for a moment before it settled back to a solid point. She put it down and watched it spin, while she waited for Sin to join her on the beach.
K-Squared - August 18, 2005 05:08 AM (GMT)
Sin sat down and stuck his toes in the gooey wet sand happily. "You can stay under for quite a while." He commented and closed his eyes to just soak in the sun. The warm sea air felt good. It wouldn't take him long to dry out. He wriggled his toes in the sand a bit more. Soon he would have to find something to eat though, which meant shortly he'd have to head back the way he came, if there was nothing around here. As if on cue his stomach gave a low growl.
CryingTaxi - August 18, 2005 05:11 AM (GMT)
Serenity dropped her compass and stared at Sin's stomach before poking him. She was constantly eating so she'd never heard sounds like that before. Her extremely fast metabolism demanded food all the time and now.
K-Squared - August 18, 2005 11:50 AM (GMT)
"So you think my stomach is noisy?" he asked after being poked. He should'nt lay out here too long anyhow. Swimming had probably stripped all his sunblock off and he didn't have more with him today.
He got up. "I'm hungry, anyplace around here to eat?" He asked Serenity.
CryingTaxi - August 18, 2005 04:35 PM (GMT)
Serenity stood up and waved for him to follow her, she walked down the beach heading for her own house. She had a lot of chips and Tv dinners, not to mention the Cups-O-Ramen. That should be more than enough to satisfy whatever lurked in Sin's belly.
K-Squared - August 18, 2005 06:03 PM (GMT)
Sinister does indeed follow after pausing to pick up his sandals and bottle of water. EH seems to have made a new friend. Now he has a blind man and a mute woman for friends, he ponders this as he walks. Wondering what he'll be eating, his stomach rumbles more.
CryingTaxi - August 18, 2005 07:43 PM (GMT)
Serenity pushed open the door to her house once they'd arrived, and made a beeline for the kitchen. She went the cuboard and found two cans of spaghettios, she turned and looked at Sin, offering him a can.
K-Squared - August 18, 2005 08:00 PM (GMT)
"Cool, good stuff." Sin said grinning from ear to ear. He stood in her kitchen and looked at the sand they ahd both tracked inside. "I'll help you clean up the sand." he said. To Sin spaghettios are almost as good as ketchup.
CryingTaxi - August 19, 2005 12:07 AM (GMT)
Serenity pulled a can opener out of the drawer and opened the two cans, then set them on the counter while she dug threw the drawer for a spoon. She pulled out two plastic spoons and handed one to Sin before going to the pantry to get a broom.
K-Squared - August 19, 2005 12:11 AM (GMT)
This was like dorm life. He ate the stuff right out of the can. It would be better hot, but when you're hungry, you're hungry. He looked around while he ate. There was something missing here, that he couldn't quite put his finger on.
CryingTaxi - August 19, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
Serenity walked into the living room, where the only furniture was the big plaid couch. She jumped over the back of the couch and pointed to her bookshelf, where almost 250 books sat in perfect order.
K-Squared - August 19, 2005 12:23 AM (GMT)
No Tv, not a radio he could see, just books. "You're not from around here at all. You walked through a time warp or something." he teased her. He did look at her books. Sinister likes reading himself. He looks at what sort of titles she enjoys.
CryingTaxi - August 19, 2005 04:35 PM (GMT)
Most of Serenity's books were either history books or books about Mythology, many of them containing infromation about sirens. Serenity just watched Sin as he looked them over, focusing more on eating her spaghettios.
K-Squared - August 19, 2005 04:42 PM (GMT)
"You like mythology I see." He comments. Interesting enough topic, but Sinister is much more engaged by math and science. "I go to the university, studying math there. You would probably like the library on campus. A lot of books there. " he told her.
CryingTaxi - August 21, 2005 04:59 PM (GMT)
Serenity nodded her head and continued eating her spaghettios, she signed 'I like reading.' not remembering that Sin didn't understand sign language.
She leaned on the couch, the blue fabric soft and velvety to her touch.
K-Squared - August 30, 2005 01:49 AM (GMT)
He nodded, he thought he understood what she meant. He wasn't sure. "I can't stay too long Serenity, I have to be home by a certain time." he explains. He does have a long walk back.
