Once is set in this universe, on this Earth. It takes place right now, in the current year, in the current month, in the Canadian city of Bayfield-- a busy modern city not unlike Toronto or Chicago. The every-day people wander listlessly through their lives-- as is so typical in a big city-- barely seeing the mundane wonders, let alone the... less conventional.

Unbeknownst to the Uninitiated, a world of fantasy lives alongside their own in Bayfield and in the world surrounding it. Gods and faes, vampires and mages, magical types of all sorts walk the streets alongside the innocuous businessman and the homeless kid.

Magic is a reality, but most people don't even realise it exists. Magical types do their best to keep it this way.

(Okay, fine. Some magic types also run around wreaking havoc on the non-magical world.)

The idea here is to bring a fantasy flavour to a modern-set roleplay, or to fill out the fantasy element inherent in vampire roleplay. Instead of gods and mages and all sorts of races and magic in a medieval setting, we’re blending it with modern times. Instead of just having vampires stalk the city streets in secret, we’re having... well, gods and mages and all sorts of races and magic.

We encourage you to keep realism in mind as you create and roleplay your characters. A mixture of seriousness and humour is welcome here, but base it in your experiences with the real modern world.

Enjoy, and don't be afraid to make your own specific settings in one of the more general areas, like The City in general, or the Good End of Town, or on Elm Street.



PLEASE NOTE: Once is NOT an anime roleplay. It is set in the western world. I don't care if your character is Japanese; that's fine... but it is NOT an anime roleplay so strange hair colours for no reason are not welcome, and Japanese names must have a good reason for being Japanese names. The animé aesthetic is discouraged.
