Title: scholars (academic) bowl
pigtails - February 8, 2003 07:47 PM (GMT)
ok, so in our area scholar's bowl quads start next week and i'm trying to cram as many random facts in my head as i can. does anyone know a good way to remember all the constitutional amendments? or presidents and basically all government stuff in general. Also, i was wondering if anyone else in the KC area is on a team going to quads so i could keep an eye out for em.
Mike_V - February 8, 2003 09:01 PM (GMT)
Take AP Government. It's quite sad I know what the "Necessary and Proper" clause is.
caitc - February 8, 2003 09:41 PM (GMT)
haha, last year in quiz bowl I wasn't consistent enough to be the player for a certain subject each match, so I was in most of the time. My famous answers included, epithelial tissue, "Shake Your Bootie," and KC and the Sunshine Band. And maybe the ninth amendment.
Seth - February 9, 2003 03:27 AM (GMT)
Oooh! Oooh! I wrote a little thingy to help me remember these... sadly though, I have no clue where it is. Let's see if I can remember a couple...
13 = abolition of slavery = unlucky for slaveowners
17 = congressional pay = twisted congressmen all love to go to NC-17 movies
Hmmm... I shall have to look for my sheet!
BoBayles - February 9, 2003 04:30 AM (GMT)
Not related to any of the original questions, but for the math calculations, I've found that memorizing (so you don't have to go through it in your head/ on paper) various divisions of 360 is helpful on quite a few questions (we invariably have "convert to radians" at some point in a match)...
1*360, 2*180, 3*120, 4*90, 5*72, 6*60, 8*45, 9*40, 10*36, 12*30, 15*24, 18*20... Quite a few... now you know why the ancients decided that there'd be 360 degrees in a circle... it divides into a bunch of numbers evenly.
http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a4_194a.htmlIf I think of any of the other stuff I have written down (I lost my paper, damnit...), I'll post that.
Polarris Delsan - February 11, 2003 03:44 AM (GMT)
hehe, we made alot of those mneumonics in Gov class.
8 is a twisted 0, it was cruely or unusually punished.
<FALSE STATEMENT>both 18 and 21 changed the voting reqs, and the voting ages were 21, then 18.</FALSE STATEMENT>
22 is for two terms for presidents. (two 2s, get it?)
I dun remember the others :P
BoBayles - February 12, 2003 03:52 AM (GMT)
18 and 21 are alcohol amendments, not voting age, for the record. I don't think voting is intoxicating... well, maybe to some people. I remember them in order, but I don't have in clever rhymes or mnemonics or nmemonics, or however that's spelled.
Polarris Delsan - February 12, 2003 03:53 AM (GMT)
Well crap then. I guess they didn't help me remember them :P
pigtails - February 27, 2003 01:40 AM (GMT)
i think i am not made for memorizing things. i made presidents flashcards, and by the time i was done going through the set a few times i had succeeded in learning 3 or 4 and unlearning everything i had down before that. it was sad, i missed lincoln and kennedy AND clinton. (dont' ask how, i don't have the slightest idea). some day we'll have to develop the ability to learn through osmosis so i can just fall asleep on the history book and wake up smarter :D
Polarris Delsan - February 27, 2003 02:22 AM (GMT)
lol, seriously.
When a president question comes along, do what I do. Put down your buzzer.

For some reason what I make a point to study for academic/ quiz/ scholar bowl never stays with me, but what I read/ study for school or for my own curiosity always comes to my mind at the right moment in a meet. Other random trivia drives me nuts sometimes, when I know I know the answer, but can't spit it out... I couldn't think of who "wrote" the Hardy Boys mysteries the other day, after my grandmother forcibly made me read those for like 7 years.
We won our meet last night; I was 2nd highest scorer! Our first guy is GOOD. He knows everything. And #3 is also a former Scholar, who does well, too.
Seth - February 27, 2003 02:24 AM (GMT)
Heh I saw Frank Kelso at like two different scholars' bowl tourneys! I guess we're in the same area...
Polarris Delsan - February 27, 2003 02:27 AM (GMT)
hehe, I'm always second on our team. That doesn't mean, however, that I answer very many questions. Our team is mostly led by our genious senior, who also happens to be a 2001 MSA Alum.

Any one going to the Marshall Academic team meet march 8th? thats my school! but i won't get to be there :( im going to a debate thing, not sure what it is though i think districts or something...if your there tell a marshallite to let me know!
pigtails - March 3, 2003 11:52 PM (GMT)
today our team got interviewed for the school broadcast (Patriot Vision...yeah. that original.) we were excited, as this meant that someone in the school realized we had a team. For the interview Hunter answered the question "how did you get into/ try out for scholars bowl?" with a long detailed answer that involved hot dog eating, the 100 situps in 100 seconds test, a couple laps around the building and a fastest finger competition, among other bizarre things. the reporter actually believed him. I begin now to understand why a) Hunter's interviews never make it onto the program B) the reporters generally shun us and c) things are always more interesting when Hunter is around.
ShannonDowning - March 21, 2003 04:46 AM (GMT)
wow academic bowl a wonderful thing! our team is probably the worst team aroung but boy do we have a good time trying! as for memorizing random facts i agree it is very hard, but one thing i did find that was easy to memorize is books/novels and their authors. within a week i was able to memorize 44 well known authors and at least two of their best books. flash cards are amazing!!! every game we have had so far, at least two of the authors/books i memorized has come up, and lit used to be our weakest subject! if anyone wants the list to study from just let me know and i'll post it. i wont do it right now though b/c i dont have it with me. good luck with all your games. i hope you all win b/c i know i more than likely wont be playing any of you b/c hardly anyone from MSA came from NEMO. :s

just wondering...i know state is coming up soon, is anyone else going? i havent' been through the ropes before so i'm not exactly sure how they do things in the SB world. but if its state it kind of implies with whole state, which would include everyone that i never see anymore :P which could result in fun times on a side note- theres a huge conference in columbia (ok, like 5 actually) and there aren't hotels to be had in a 70 mile radius. mr sapp was wondering how many of us would really be against sleeping in his buddy's barn. not me!! :fun: party til the cows come home....literally
Seth - March 25, 2003 12:38 AM (GMT)
Well... barring unforeseen lightning from the sky that kills my entire team, we'll be going to state. We took first place in 1A last year :D. Going for two!
MarkBuhrMO - March 25, 2003 01:19 AM (GMT)
Congrats Seth. *trying hard to remember who won last year* Do you go to Thomas Jefferson? Out of curiousity after MSA I looked at the state academic team tournament program. I remember seeing you and a couple other '02 scholars.
My school has gone to state the past 8 years or so, but we've never gotten 1st. Unfortunately, there's a good chance that we won't be going this year. Not to brag or anything but if you look at me, you're looking at my team. I'm not getting any help from anyone. Luckily my 14 toss-ups a game is good to win most within my conference.
Mark

sadly i don't do quiz bowl at my school anymore. i can't put up with the people on the team :s , i know that's awful to say, but it's true. people in this town are a rare breed, lol. BUT, scholar bowl at msa was TRULY awesome *cough*HEARTATTACKERS*cough*. i still know what a yak is!
pigtails - April 5, 2003 11:55 PM (GMT)
ok, super super cool...."state" for JV scholars teams( i think just in this area though, i didn't see too many from far away...) was today and it was a blast. we were 3-0 before lunch and after we lost our 1st round, but only by 20 pts. :P But the best thing about it was i saw annie!!!! (for those of you that aren't me, annie was my suite-mate and is totally cool. and tres sympa (learning new french words...yay) so that made my day. actually that made my entire week. yup. so thats my exciting news.
Polarris Delsan - April 6, 2003 02:26 AM (GMT)
Arg, we lost Conference to Ray Pec by 10 points in overtime! arrrrr :arr:
Sooooooo close...
BoBayles - April 14, 2003 02:35 AM (GMT)
Hey! Friday was districts for my team, and we got first place! Cool, huh? We got first place at conference, too. We had two individuals make "All Districts", as well. One was me. The other was the team captain, who is an incredible wealth of knowledge (we won the semi-final game mostly because he knew the capitals of 4 obscure former Soviet States. It was amazing). He scored 660 points during the tournament, which isn't even counting the team bonus questions, which he knew a lot of. He's darned fast on the buzzer, too.
Anyway, that means I'll be at state quiz bowl on May 10th. Who else will be there?
Seth - April 17, 2003 12:38 AM (GMT)
*Seth waves hand
"Me! Me!" Our district was hands-down the hardest 1A district in the entire state. The two teams combined in the final round for over 100 more points than the next-closest district. We bumped out Lockwood for first, and placed three players on the all-district team. Me (the captain), our history guy (who has the best afro ever seen on a white guy), and our general knowledge guy (who's British). Is anybody else 1A? I'd hate to have to beat a fellow MSA-er :P !
Polarris Delsan - April 17, 2003 12:51 AM (GMT)
hehe, I missed districts along with our team captain because I was taking the ACTs.
That Saturday was a such a stupid day to schedule it...
Hey Seth, I bet I know someone who has a better white-guy afro :P
pigtails - May 1, 2004 03:35 PM (GMT)
just out of curiosity, has anyone else heard anything about a tournament in chicago at the end of May? my coach says we're going... just wondering if anyone else is.
Seth - May 1, 2004 05:43 PM (GMT)
We were almost going, but school's not out yet. We're going to the one in STL instead.
mjbauer - May 2, 2004 09:01 AM (GMT)
Hmm...wonder if McCluer North will be at the STL one. My younger brother'll be there if so...
pigtails - June 3, 2004 05:08 AM (GMT)
Guess what? we went to Chicago -didn't win, didn't place, but didn't embarrass ourselves too much either- and I roomed with Kimberly Kerr!! i didn't actually know her at MSA but... it was cool. She is on the Savannah team, and we hit them all the time during the school year however they are extremely good and beat us more than we beat them so there was a little grr-ishness on our part during the year. but alas... we were wrong to be that way because the team was very nice and kimberly is extremely cool, besides being very bright and very fast. i was way impressed.
BoBayles - June 3, 2004 05:58 AM (GMT)
Kim Kerr is frighteningly good at Academic Bowl.
caitc - June 4, 2004 02:44 AM (GMT)
I tink dats why we won... :D It definitely wasn't my fantastical brain
Grant Berry - July 10, 2004 01:01 AM (GMT)
Wow. Our scholar bowl team isn't that great. We don't really try that hard, I guess. We get stomped by oak park, liberty, and truman all the time. They're good. Sigh... :(
