Title: National Honor Society
caitc - May 7, 2003 04:03 AM (GMT)
Hey everybody, we just had elections for officers for NHS, i got prez :D , but our school doesn't do anything with NHS ever. "research" has shown me that most schools do charity work with NHS. Do you guys have experience with this? I want to get something started here.
BoBayles - May 7, 2003 12:21 PM (GMT)
NHS in my school does some charity-type stuff... at Christmas, we sponsored some poor families and did Christmas gifts for them. We're also in charge of the Retired Teacher's thing, so we put on the luncheon type thing for the retired teachers. With the rest of the money from dues and fundraisers, NHS sends a guy and a girl to Boys' and Girls' State in the summer, and gives two small scholarships.

My school's NHS pretended to do charity work...and stopped sending me flyers about meetings...and was run by drama students, essentially...but yeah, it held blood drives every spring and fall, and did various other random things, none of which were particularly noteworthy.
Kudos to you to for trying to actually get NHS to do what it's supposed to!
(Yeah, I know, I'm such a cynic about my high school...and in general...)
:D (A) ;)
caitc - May 7, 2003 08:55 PM (GMT)
it's hard not to be cynical about high school, unless it's actually good, lol. i pretty much opted today not to run for class prez because they're in charge of reunions. I think i laughed out loud when the sponsor said that. Like i'd come back. Well, maybe, but I sure WOULD NOT be the person planning on it. So mainly charity type stuff for NHS? And scholarships... seems like that's what it was all supposed to be about. i'll see what i can get to float here... i may need a life boat.

our NHS requires 5 hours of community service from each member or you are put on probation. which means nothing because the comserv lady just smiles a lot and tells you to work on it when you can, dear...its not the end of the world. apparently people have cried in the past and she didnt' enjoy that. i think you can actually use A+ tutoring hours as the comserv for NHS so really there isn't much effort expended into it here, or anywhere else from the sounds of it. so glad to see that we care so much about the rest of the world.
Aubrey_Smith2002 - May 8, 2003 03:41 AM (GMT)
my school's NHS usually does the blood drive thing, takes care of the school property that the custodians can't, and helps out at the "Hope House" down the street which takes in abused women and children. they do some other stuff as well. there isn't a requirement of hours, but as my school demands 10 hours of community service to graduate, as well as 5 hours for every weighted course one takes, 30 hours of required community service per year is normal at Lee's Summit North. Required community service...isn't that kind of an oxymoron?
Polarris Delsan - May 8, 2003 03:48 AM (GMT)
My School's NHS encourages service, and a lot of people do it, but it isn't required. We do more things inside the school than outside.
Congrats Cait, have fun feeling powerful :) Who knows, maybe you could start the popularity of community service in your NHS.
Seth - May 10, 2003 01:32 AM (GMT)
We require 15 hours of service per semester. This year we did a canned food drive and a phone card drive to buy phone cards for the soldiers in Iraq. Last year we did a backpack drive for the homeless. We're also sponsoring a study session the week before finals.
caitc - May 10, 2003 03:19 AM (GMT)
seth is that that crazy cram session thing? thanks for all the ideas guys, i don't have any ideas when the meetings come up, probably not til next year. hopefully i can get some motivation going. you know it makes sense that NHS is supposed to do things that it stands for. wow this is one off town. you guys wouldn't believe the stuff that goes on here, hehe. our seniors had their last day of school today so the school is only two-thirds full for two weeks. waste of tax money. anyway, after aps school is over! I'm so excited if you can't tell. Thanks again for the advice, i love hearing from people who know what they're talking about. :D
Seth - May 10, 2003 03:41 AM (GMT)
Yup, that's Cram Session. I designed the t-shirts this year :D
You get out of school after APs? No fair! Our APs are already over... I took Eng Lang, Calc BC, and US History.
caitc - May 11, 2003 01:52 AM (GMT)
lol, we still have that monkey shirt from whenever that was. nah we don't get out of school after aps, lol, there are only like five people who take them. that would be no fair! :P It will be LiKE I get out of school even though I have to go every day for two more weeks <_< . Since the seniors graduate, and my classes are either aps that don't have work to do when the tests pass, or they're "advanced" classes with tons of seniors (who will be gone). so it's just like it's over. i can't wait til tuesday afternoon! i'll be home free! :w00t:

hush up, Margaret. This is the secretary of NHS at your old high school. And we plan to do great things this year.
And it's not all drama people. I don't know where you got that idea. It's actually a super rad group of people in "official" positions this year. It's going to be so much fun.
Hannah - June 25, 2003 03:19 PM (GMT)
hehe. you make me laugh, margaret. why am I just learning this now?
caitc - June 23, 2003 01:08 AM (GMT)
a second question along the same lines...the sponsor, who is supposed to support us in our scholarly and characterly and stuff actions, blew me off when i said i wanted to do stuff and asked her for the list of other officers. how do you deal with adult "morons"?
mjbauer - June 23, 2003 03:49 AM (GMT)
Well, Hannah, that's good - it used to be only drama people in all the top positions - I don't know how it is now, but I'm glad you're fixing it!

Sadly, you're doomed to have to put up with her. One of the problems with being in high school. Thankfully our sponsor is cool about letting us do whatever we want to, whew.
Hannah - June 23, 2003 07:15 PM (GMT)
I guess the "all drama" officer group was before my time, Margaret.
I don't even know who you know of these people, but I'll list the officers anyhow.
Joe Wheadon is president. The worst he could possibly be is at least a dozen times better than Mike Wolk ever was. sigh.
Kathy Schulte is VP. You know Kathy. I think.
I am secretary. You know me. You just forget about me a lot.
And Michelle Steyer (Julia's sister) is treasurer. Because no one else was running for it and the treasurer doesn't do anything.
So, in any event, this year will be a whole lot of fun.
As for sucky sponsors, Cait, I don't know what to tell you. Our sponsor really doesn't care about us. He's not an adult moron, but he's not a great sponsor, either. Our budget, however, is basically unlimited. Thanks to our principal. Who is a moron.
Feezor - June 23, 2003 07:56 PM (GMT)
Congratulations on getting prez!
I'm treasurer... get to handle all the money!!
