Hi group, One of our members Paul sent me this yesterday.
Cheers.

Hi Folks,

Just in the house after seeing one unusual sighting over town.

Walking along London Road at 21:30hrs, I glance up to catch sight of a bright white light arcing at high speed across the sky in a South South-Easterly direction. It was at least 2,000ft AGL, but difficult to estimate more exactly as it was a featureless light against a black sky. Cloud cover was light at around 2 - 3 Oktas and the light travelled across a cloudless section of sky.

When I first saw the light, it was almost directly overhead and leaving a long, trailing tail behind it.
As it got around 60 degrees in elevation, the tail dissolved to leave the bright white light travelling on the same straight trajectory on it`s own when it then disappeared suddenly. The sighting lasted approximately 2 seconds.

The appearance of the light and tail and subsequent dissolving nature was similar to that of a white practice flare. What distinguished this from the same was the trajectory (horizontal in the sky) and size of the light, which was much larger and brighter than any flare would appear at that height.

There were no corresponding sounds (engine noise, whizz, bang, crackling or such) at the time and the object appeared to travel silently throughout the sighting.

One for the records!

This sounds like an interesting sighting but unfortunately doesn't give a date so we can only assume that it was last night 23rd September 2008.

Could it have been a really bright meteor? I once saw one from near the Pleasance in Edinburgh. Amazing to see something like that in the middle of the city.
