St Andrews UFO Mystery

Dundee Evening Telegraph 31st January 2000

The mystery behind a recent spate of UFO sightings in Tayside and Fife deepened today as a St Andrews man claimed he saw a strange bright light zig-zag across the sky over the North Sea last night, writes Micheal Alexander.
The man, who asked not to be named, said he and his wife were eating chips in a car parked on the road near St Andrews' West Sands around 8pm when he saw a strange phenomenon in the sky which left him ``gobsmacked and bewildered''.

The man explained, ``It was dark and the weather was really stormy. The rain was lashing off the windows and the wind was buffeting the car from side-to-side. There were clouds scudding by from west to east with an orange glow cast skyward by the light pollution from St Andrews. A few stars were visible through gaps in the clouds.

``But it was my wife who saw the thing in the sky first. Out over the North Sea, up to the right of some ship which seemed to be sheltering in the bay, there was the most bizarre looking flying object I have ever seen. It was a bright green light, steady in brightness, which seemed to hover somewhere over the Kinkell Braes, round about where the Kingask development is being constructed.

``At first we thought it might be a flare from a ship in distress, but then the light suddenly shot across the sky before stopping dead, off Tentsmuir Forest. It must have travelled about five miles in a second before then shooting off towards Arbroath at a 90 degree angle. Then it was gone.''

The man said neither he or his wife believed in alien spacecraft but could not explain what they had seen.

He said he knew the difference between a shooting star and a Tornado from RAF Leuchars and was adamant it was neither of these.

Today a Leuchars spokesman confirmed there were no military aircraft in the area at that time. Fife Police also confirmed there had been no reports of anything unusual in the sky. No ships were reported to be in distress.

The alleged sighting comes just days after a number of Dundonians spotted strange lights circling the city skyline with sightings also being made in Angus.

Experts have suggested many of these sightings might have a much more rational explanation, such as weather phenomenon, satellites falling from space or even overactive imaginations.

Fife has been no stranger to UFOs in recent years, from saucer-shaped craft allegedly seen near the Lomond Hills to a serviceman who claimed strange lights had buzzed the end of the runway at RAF Leuchars.

Interesting. Does anyone here have any details of the other sightings at round about the same time? I had a look back through the postings in this forum but didn't find any from this time.

I agree with Alison this is very interesting, I done a Google search and thats came up with nothing either.
