Title: Biggest game dissapointment?

HippyJon - July 17, 2003 03:07 PM (GMT)
destruction derby 2, thought the first one was simple great fun, but the second tried to be a race em up, but with terrible handling and no matter if you lightly brushed an opponent or smashed into the side of em, the result was the same; you spin/loose loads of speed, they carry on merrily as if nothing happend

I do remember that game. From good ol' DMA Design.

QUOTE (Ste Pickford @ Jul 17 2003, 03:49 PM)
You're all being a bit unfair on Super Mario Sunshine. Fair enough if you were disappointed (this is a disappointment thread), it had a lot to live up to, but to call it an outright bad game is insane.

I've had countless hours of fun playing it. Maybe my viewpoint was coloured a little by the fact that I was mainly playing it with my 4 year old daughter, but every day for a couple of months SMS would be switched on when I got home from work, and stayed on non-stop until she went to bed a few hours later. Then most days I'd have an hour or so more on my own to play a difficult bit. And I enjoyed every (well, almost every) minute of it.

What Ste Pickford said, but without the board messing up after I've posted it thereby making me write it all out again. It's not going to be as good second time round but still.

To decry it as useless is madness. Just when you begin to get a little tired of it it throws up something both new and interesting, be it "wow! it's like a pachinko machine but giant!" or "wow it's the Dungeons and Dragons ride!" or whatever, SMS is veritable minefeild of inventiveness, albeit a minefield where some of the mines have already have gone off.

The camera could do with some work, I don't disagree with that for a second. And Super Mario really isn't a game that requires tedious RPG style sequences in the main hub. And the levels are possibly a bit too sprawling - Mario 64 gave the impression of freedom but was actually fairly linear in its focus, there are a few too many wide open spaces for comfort here. And there's no slippy slidey ice world.

But the feeling of achievement you feel when you get a shine, especially in the excellent void level sequences, makes it all seem worth it and good.

ow if you want to bitch about a game, why not bitch about the much raved over, technically impressive, atmospheric as heck, fantastic looking exploroboreathon that is Metroid Prime? A game I really wanted to like but ended up not playing more than about three hours worth.

I enjoyed Wind Waker while it lasted, but there was no *clicks fingers* magic. What I really want in dungeons, I've decided, is machinery. Really big, scary mechanical engines, occupying an entire central large room and also affected by or affecting rooms all over the dungeon. Like the water flow in Majora's Mask's Great Bay Temple, but more so. A cog wheel as wide as the Deku Tree.

I think Nintendo are getting too far ahead of themselves when they think "replay value". Smash Brothers: getting all the trophies and doing absolutely everything? Flipping impossible, not to mention laborious in the extreme. Wind Waker is the same. With Ocarina you could go for a fuly complete game, and GET it, with effort and/or a guide for the Skulltulas. But Wind Waker, I cast my eye down the list of Things To Do: (http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/file/zelda_wind_waker_checklist.txt) and my brain just slowly freezes over. Nobody has the patience to do all that, even with a complete walkthrough. It's just insane.

I digress. TimeSplitters 2 was the greatest let-down for me. You need clairvoyance to get anywhere on Hard in that game with being sniped, the level designs on many of the multiplayer arenas was shocking (e.g. Aztec), and the weapons selection was TERRIBLE.

Maybe The Getaway or Hurdy-Gerdy.

Herdy gerdy had so much promise *punches monitor*

Yoshi's Story is the single biggest gaming disappointment in my life.

Gotta be advance Wars, I got it a day before it came out, took it back within a week.

CLEARLY Mario Sunshine. My heart, she-a broken.

ANY version of Elite after the first one.

Possibly God - July 16, 2003 03:38 PM (GMT)
For me it's got to Metroid Prime.

I can appreciate it's a good game but for me personally it was dissapointing. Just got bored with all the to and froing.

Much like WW, if I wanted to sail a boat over uneventful sea's then i'd join the bloody yacht club.

giant_frying_pan - July 16, 2003 04:00 PM (GMT)
Majora's Mask had no right to be anywhere near as good as Ocarina of Time, but it was.

I mention this because the next Zelda game using the Wind Waker engine has soooo much room for improvement. Such as more than two temples. And more ye olde Hyrule. And such.

Why is there a cutscene every bloody time I sucsesfully use the grappling hook in WW! its like opening a door in Resident evil.

They couldn't be bothered to animate the rope attaching in real-time, so they used the same one over and over. I know this because my uncle works with EAD*

You likey the new hookshot design though, no? Yes? Hotdog?

another thing was everytime you open a chest you think oooo a new item... but no, it was the hookshot or another item youve already used a million times in ocarine and majora. the new items were good but they were few and far between.

giant_frying_pan - July 16, 2003 04:15 PM (GMT)
Or even worse, another of those damn butterfly things!!!

Yeah the game felt rushed. It's good stuff, but there's not enough meat 'n' potatoes in the game.

I loved the syncronised fight sound effects though. Great when fighting a boss :D

I kinda decided I wasn't ready for hard mode for a long long time. It is possible, mind. You just need to basically perfect the game, but no more so than you needed to to complete Goldeneye on 00 Agent. I think it's a good thing.

Best bit about TS2 is the arcade and challenge modes - trying to get platinums at the moment and it's top fun.

Kinda related, but biggest dissapointment for me was Perfect Dark. I appear to be somewhat alone on this, but I found it worse than Goldeneye in almost every single area. Infact, I'd go as far as saying the single player was "awful", although the multiplayer was fantastic.

In terms of thinking 'This looks great' beforehand, i stupidly bought Worlds Scariest Police Chases.

What a meh game.

Burning Rangers disappointed me, but i so badly want to give it another chance.

I just couldnt figure it.

Most modern games, Zelda: WW, Mario Sunshine, cant dissapoint, as i dont have much high hopes for any game that isnt by Sega or Treasure any more.

To tell the truth i like em both, but they do both become tedius.

Oh, and like Timesplitters 1, i knew that 2 would be a boring crappy thing, and i am pleased at being right once again.

You're not though, son. Check the 10/10s

(ok so it's gamefaqs, but if there is a better way of finding the general opinion of a game, without resorting to those exploited epinions-styleee places, I'd like to hear it)

ig1234 - July 16, 2003 06:47 PM (GMT)
So many people on GameFAQs are very stupid, especially the PS2-owning folk there, who'd give 10/10 to a game before they play it based on hype.

Granted its not PS2 only, but its crap on all formats.

Gecko - July 16, 2003 06:52 PM (GMT)
Agree to disagree, because frankly I think it's grand. I didn't till about 2 weeks ago, when I actually tried to get better at it, rather than just give up on the hard levels. Amazing amount of depth to that game...

ig1234 - July 16, 2003 07:02 PM (GMT)
Well i played my mates quite a bit, and the multiplayer bit is whats been raved about.

I found it utterly repetitive and boring, Pefect Dark it most certainly isnt.

My mate was bored of the single player bit in under a week.

Oh well.

To many dissapointments to name - I'm have a horrible tendancy to think about how wonderful a game is going to be and how I'll be able to play it all the time, and then it turns out to be a big stinking pile of pants.

Heres some culprits: -

Unreal 2
Black & White
Grand Prix 2
Force Commaner
Tiberiun Sun

Suprising how most are sequels

Ditto.

F-zero GBA also smelled me up.

Patrick - July 17, 2003 12:27 PM (GMT)
Yeah, F-Zero GBA was like the SNES one but with all the edges taken off. Even the car-exploding sound effect was pitiful. Very bland.

Mario Sunshine was definitely a disappointment. Very repetitive and (that word again) padded-out, I remember getting to the last level and thinking I was at least half way through, only to be really let down. In no way a worthy sequel to Mario 64. Although I do have some rather pleasant memories of blitzing through SMS with Raw Power on repeat a day before going to see the Manics.

Don't really know why those disappointments are Nintendo games. I think it's because they've got to the point where everything they do is expected to be of fantastic lovliness, and then the games come out and (particularly in the Gamecube's case) they aren't. I do agree about the daft attitude to replay value. With the N64, I would replay nearly every in-house Nintendo game until everything had been uncovered (although this might be because not a lot of games came out, and I had more free time), and I just haven't had that compulsion with GC games. The Wind Waker definitely went too far. That game is just insanely over-padded, like a townie outside Sega Park in 1999.

the_debaser - July 17, 2003 01:56 PM (GMT)
I'm with the Rev. on this one.

Super Mario Sunshine was just so bad it makes me want to kill every person who worked on it. Mario 64, as any level headed individual will agree, is possibly the best game ever made. I bought a PRETTY FLOWERing GameCube for Mario 64 2. Zelda and Metroid were nice bonuses awaiting me, but Mario 64 2 was what I really wanted.

So I imported the little bugger and wept with excitement as I loaded it up. However, I managed to get about 26 shines on SMS before giving up on that stupid PRETTY FLOWERing one hidden behind the windmill where the camera goes bezerk. Nintendo managed to break my heart like no woman ever has, or hopefully, ever will.

I only played it for about 90 minutes. More than that and I'd have had to jam the controller in my eyes.

Well I liked Mario Sunshine its not as good as mario 64 but not much is, and compared to charmless games like Jak & Daxter its super Neat-o. I also think The Wind Waker is very nice, maybe im just a big fat Nintendo fanboy
As for dissapointments i thought Perfect Darks single player game was nowhere near as good as Goldeneyes. :P

I wouldn't go so far as to say Mario Sunshine is a bad game. There's just nothing in it that approaches greatness. There's bits that have promise, like being able to ride Yoshi and throwing up on windows, but for the most part it's superficial, Mario-as-a-Zelda-game stuff.

Also : Does the lack of a new, bona-fide 2D Mario platform game for the GBA count as a disappointment? It does to me. They have the GBA's potential just lying there, and they release updates of old games you can get on an emulator anyway. For 35 quid a go.

Gahh. I though someone would have mentioned Perfect Dark in this whole disppointments thing. The singleplayer game trumps Goldeneye by a country mile, if you ask me.

Yes. That's one of the most stupid things Nintendo has ever done (or not done, I suppose). You've got to wonder how their minds work sometimes. Then again, Super Mario Advance 4 has just sold 110,000 copies in its first weekend in Japan, so perhaps we can't really blame them.

Several years later I found Spin Dizzy wasn't that terrible.
