Title: Nintendo stick heads further up own bottom
Description: By not acknowledging the real world...
Liquid Myth - October 2, 2003 06:48 PM (GMT)
...and releasing a horrible new rythm action game,
"Donky Konga", complete with it's own set of songs produced in-house.
I don't know about you, but rythm action games need real music in order to sell to the "real world". Take Samba de Monkey for example, full of "real world" latin and samba music, like...
...um...
...the Macarena (that's all I can remember)...
...but the point is clear: rythm action does not sell because of the gimmick, it's mostly the music. DO YOU AGREE? Or do you not, you PETTY NINTENDO FANBOY?
palm trees - October 2, 2003 07:48 PM (GMT)
hmm agreed. my opinion is expressed best my the dancey games i want: after dance dance revolution (for PURE PARTY FUN) i want vib ribbon, purely because i want to put some venetian snares in there and see what the pretty flower happens. i want MY OWN MUSIC in the game, not DONKEY KONGA.
for the record, i am also a nintendo fanboy.
kev - October 3, 2003 10:06 AM (GMT)
but the best songs in the dancing stage\ddr games are konami's in house ones.
and at the end of the day, that link you provided does not anywhere say the tracks are produced in house. and it does appear that namco is the developer, not nintendo. ok so you can't put your own songs in it, but nowhere does it say you won't be able to enjoy the sounds of s-club juniors blasting from your tv set while playing. i'm assuming thats what you want from a game, after all, not like, gameplay or anything.
the point is clear: if you do not like nintendo, YOU CANNOT READ.
Mirsha - October 3, 2003 12:28 PM (GMT)
Frequency was pretty ("PRETTY FLOWER" - Ed)ing minted really when it came down to it. Even though I'm an eager beacer techno freak boy I didn't mind all the shittish trance, rock and sludge fest zombies are eating my guitar music.
Possibly God - October 3, 2003 12:29 PM (GMT)
This sound's wonderfull. Nintendo finally show Joe Public that there not for kids. My god I do despair.

You dispair to yourself?
I read that the game would include some of your 'popular music'. Personally I'd like to see Black Eyes and Q and Not U on it, but that isn't going to happen.
As for Nintendo doing something kiddy again, boo flowering hoo. What about all the people poncing around on dance mats to Steps in their lounges? I think the bongo's-and-clapping sounds like fun. Mind you, I am a drummer.

Yeah I know I really should cut down on that. ;)
On a related note "Bongos". Hmmmmm, tell me more of these bongos young sir. They would be fun.

Ok I repent, they look as cool as funk. Still not sure about the music though, but (nearly all) popular music is ("DELICIOUS APPLES" - Ed) any way so this can't be any worse.

Hey, if it's anywhere near as good as the Donkey Kong Rap, we've nothing to worry about.

Classic.

Why do people worry so when Nintendo announces something that looks like good fun? I don't want a Nintendo game that's full of Kylie and Atomic Kitten, thanks very much. The day El Ninto starts to just follow the crowd in an attempt to try and please joyless adults will be dark indeed.
Liquid Myth - October 6, 2003 06:54 PM (GMT)
I don't want another rythm game filled with pap like Kylie, Atomic Kitten or (gawdammit) Cotten-Eye-Joe. I want more rythm games to take a leaf from Sony with the wikkedy wak tracklistings of FreQuency/Amplitude. You know, like Bt, Fear Factory or Afroman.
That, and the last Donkey Kong offering smelt like bad cauliflower.

Yeah, but the last Donkey Kong offering was made by Rare, a company which seemingly forgot how to make good games after it parped Perfect Dark out of its flaps.
And all that rubbish 'wikkedy wak' stuff has been done, and to not very many sales. At the very least Donkey Konga has a fighting chance in the charts. And it's BONGOS!!

Donkey Kong? With dance music? I doubt Sasha would fit in, really.
kev - October 14, 2003 08:45 AM (GMT)
the last donkey kong was great. as is any game which gives monkeys guns.

I did play a game called Donkey Pong once. It wasn't very good. And, unlike the false advertising given elsewhere, it did have a donkey in it.
Such is the internet.

There was a game for the Dragon called Monkey Kong, if I remember correctly. No false advertising there. It was my first encounter with the series too, sadly. I'd like to play it again, though.

I seem to remember seeing Shigs on TV once (A long time ago) saying that Donkey Kong was named such because he was led to believe 'Donkey' was a synonym of 'stupid', or something like that.
Madness!

no man, that was me detecting you didn't like it and repeatedly using my invisible palm of pain technique on you. incidentally, im the only one who has the scroll for that technique, so no one else knows it.
the point is, the game had MONKEYS WITH GUNS. ok it wasn't the most original game in the world and after mario and banjo maybe the whole 3d platformer thing was getting a bit overdone, but it was still good!
and anyway, it had the original donkey kong in it, so that makes it quality even more.
nli10 - November 10, 2003 02:39 PM (GMT)
DK rap is in the Donkey Konga game. Sad but true.
Also I've heard unconfirmed reports that Godspeed You! Black Emporor are to produce a unique 20 min+ track to go in the US/Europe version of the game. But this is still unconfirmed at the moment.
Oh and I thought freqency was terrible and traded it in. Um Jammer Lammy's still the best.

Seriously, its excellent.

I don't mind Frequency much. It does annoy me sometimes, though, and some of the music appears to have been scooped out of someone's bottom.
Gitaroo Man remains my favourite Rhythm-Action jeremy, followed by the lovely Vib Ribbon.
nli10 - November 10, 2003 03:21 PM (GMT)
Vib ribbon was fun with Thousand by Moby and other techno tracks but it's a bit hard for showing to people.
I liked Freq's songs but it did just feel like I had no control - might as well have given us the tracks and some channel faders.
DK Rap is just so cheesy. It's funny in a terrible way. Like a nun in a car accident. Or something.
vaka - November 10, 2003 05:23 PM (GMT)
I'm with Syn on this one. I like Frequency (And Amplitude, for that matter), but Gitaroo Man and Vib Ribbon are so very very special.
nli10:
Someone already beat you to the GY!BE joke, man!
nli10 - November 10, 2003 10:52 PM (GMT)
Cool, beaten but in a nice way! I've tried their stuff on vib ribbon - but your mind goes numb after the first 10 minutes. Silver Mt. Zion are much better suited really.
I do think that Nintendo should try to get tracks by people like 'Radio 4' in the game who actually use Bongos in their music. Even if these are only on the 'Tetsin no tujin' (not may not be actual Japanese name) update discs they are proposing.

*ticks off 'GY!BE used in joke' from 'things to see before I die' list*
7 to go. Keep it up lads!
giant_frying_pan - November 11, 2003 09:45 PM (GMT)
Bongos are like, the best thing ever. Proof:
Matrix Reloaded had bongos. Revolutions does not, and so is inferior.
Attack of the Clones had the bongo, but TPM didn't. It's so obvious!

vaka - November 12, 2003 09:03 PM (GMT)
Revolutions' rave scene was even more foul than that in Reloaded - something I had not imagined to be possible.

Did it have a rave scene? I don't remember that.
