Title: Setting up Doom Legacy!
Description: Playing a single and multiplayer game

Zorcher - August 1, 2004 06:27 AM (GMT)
Can someone please sticky this:

So, you are new to Chex Quest, and would like to play TUCQ, but don't have doom.wad purchased to play, right?

Well, these instructions are here for you to play the game for free with chex.wad, either as a single-player game or as a multiplayer game for when we want to duke it out!

The two programs you will need to set up this program to play is Doom Legacy, used to play TUCQ, and Doom Connector, used to make a room and play a deathmatch easily online!

Download the Doom Legacy program on http://legacy.newdoom.com/ Follow the links to the SourceForge site where at the time this was written, download the Doom Legacy full version v1.42 for Windows. Follow the installation instructions and it is recommended that it be installed at default: C:\Program Files\Legacy\

Download the Chex files at http://chexcentral.net/index.php?act=downloads
Inside the zip file downloaded, find a file that is called chex.wad.
This file has all the maps, sprites, and information TUCQ needs to run. Take that file and put it in your Doom Legacy folder, aka

C:\Program Files\Legacy\chex.wad

Next, get The Ultimate Chex Quest Phase 2 Beta 2 over at http://www.doomlegends.com/chexquest/download.html
Put the file cquestp2b2.wad that is included and also put that in your Doom Legacy folder.

Now, you will need to go into your Doom Legacy folder, and find the chex.wad file you downloaded earlier. This file MUST be renamed to doom.wad . The reason for this is because there is a glitch that Doom Legacy thinks it's based off Doom 2, and the game will never load. To save you from trouble later, rename it to doom.wad now.

SINGLE PLAYER INSTRUCTIONS!

Now, fire up the Doom Legacy program, we need to set up the game!

First, you should see buttons on the right that say Launch, Multiplayer..., etc. Find the button that says Game Mode... and press that button. In the box that comes up, tell the program where the Doom Legacy program is. It will be at C:\Program Files\Legacy\Legacy.exe . Point it to that file.

Now, under that same menu, you need to point to the game information, which is the doom.wad file you created earlier. Point to the first box and type in C:\Program Files\Legacy\doom.wad . Make sure the bullet is selected after typing in. It should be all set, so click ok!

Next, click the Setup... button. You usually don't need to change settings here, but under Display Options, you will see a box that says "Render Mode" and "Software (default)". If you have a fast video card or a later computer, set the Render Mode to OpenGL. This way, you will get better graphics when running the game! That's it, so click ok!

Next, you have to tell Legacy where to find TUCQ, so you can play a single-player game! Hit the Single Map... button. On these options, you will see some Customize... options. On the additional Files box, point it to where TUCQ is located, and click Ok when done. The box should say something like "Cquestp2b2.wad". When it does, it's ready to go! Set your skill as you see fit, with "I'm too young to die" for an easier game, and "Nightmare" as a harder game. Just remember that enemies come back under "Nightmare" skill!

There you go! You are ready to zorch some flemoids! During the game, just press escape at any time to go into the options menu, the only thing you may want to do here is to familiarize yourself with what buttons do what actions. Enjoy the game!

DEATHMATCH INSTRUCTIONS!

So now, you've beaten the game and want to find out the skills of other players, so join in for a deathmatch!

To set up a deathmatch, you will need the program called Doom Connector. It can be found at

http://www.codeimp.com/connector_download.php?

(Note to some technical users: I think it's better to use Doom Connector for Deathmatch. The problems we've had with Doom Legacy is that it only refers to the chex.wad as needed. I believe that Legacy has clients download the information as needed from cquestp2b2.wad from the server's computer and not the clients. Since it has to download this file while clients play the game, it causes lag for them, while the server has it on their computer and end up getting the fast connection. BUT Doom Connector requires that everyone has cquestp2b2.wad downloaded and everyone gets the same fast connection because they refer to those on their own hard drives. I have yet to test this theory though...)

Install Doom Connector on your hard drive, preferably under the default C:\Program Files\Doom Connector folder specifyed.

After installed, run Doom Connector! It may run an update automatically, so let it do its thing.

When it comes up, you might need to create an account. For younger kids, please protect and remember your ID and password. You will need it.

If you have one already, GREAT! Just sign in!

After you sign in, you also have to set up this program to where all your files are located.

Go to Support>Doom Legacy Setup... In the menu that pops up, you will need to find the box that says Engine Folder... . Type in C:\Program Files\Legacy\ as where it can be found.

Next, on the left, go to Options. Set Renderer mode to OpenGL or software, depending on how fast your computer is. You must use your own judgement, so test it in Single Player first in Doom Legacy. Great, it now knows where Doom Legacy is, so click ok!

Next, go to Support>Custom Files Locations... Add a custom file folder of C:\Program Files\Legacy\ and make sure to set this as the download folder as well. That's it, so click ok!

Now, you are ready to play a Deathmatch! Look for the rooms tab up above, and click on that.

In all the rooms, you need to find the room that is called Chex Quest Deathmatch. The password to get in is usually chexserver.

After that, you are all set! Click the button Launch Game... and get ready to fight!

If you have trouble, the people in the server can help you with any questions! Enjoy, and I hope this tutorial was easy to understand.

(Note to tech users: We've had problems with some people setting up the chex.wad which is doom.wad as the iwad. That is automatically done for you by your custom folder locations specifyied and by what the server requires you to have. BUT, YOU MUST SET UP THE CUSTOM FILES LOCATIONS BEFORE YOU JOIN THE SERVER! IF YOU DO, YOU GET A .wad don't match error AND YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO GET ONLINE!)

Also, for others who want to host this deathmatch server when I'm not logged in, I can send you the information files as needed, which are Chex.rsh which store the server information and chex.shm which tells what files are necessary and how the game is setup. This can be loaded in the Create Room... and Setup Game... options respectively.

I typed in this instructions tonight, we definately need a tutorial here. :)

Very cool, Zorcher, this would teach the noobies how to play on DC ^_^

Zorcher - August 1, 2004 06:41 AM (GMT)
I wrote this tonight, because I want as many people as we possibly can to test out the server tomorrow. I had fun on our deathmatch server today, but still have some problems.

Besides, doing this also helps TUCQ to see if it works correctly as a deathmatch map.

EDIT: My theory is true! The Doom Connector prevents lagging! There is none! We should definately use this program for deathmatches in the future!

NTG56 - August 1, 2004 02:48 PM (GMT)
very, very, cool! this sounds better then something the DL team would have written! this sure woudlla helped me out about 6 months ago! ^_^

Can i copy this an put it on my site? i would give you complete credit for it. If not, can you upload it as a txt document to an ftp server or somtin?

Zorcher - August 1, 2004 02:59 PM (GMT)
I typed it in as a .txt document and copied it over to these forums. Hopefully, maybe we can include pictures in the near future.

I tried uploading to my site, but it's not working. Can you PM your email address to me?

BTW, you should really set up Doom Connector the way my instructions say. You need to be setup when we start a deathmatch today!

NTG56 - August 1, 2004 03:28 PM (GMT)
yeah i do have DC setup! I am NTG56 on there! (big suprise, huh?) ^_^

ok i will pm message.

Zorcher - August 1, 2004 11:14 PM (GMT)
Alright, I am having trouble setting up a server using Doom Connector. I also need to setup instructions for how to start and join a multiplayer game in Doom Legacy. Here's how it's done! :)

Fire up Doom Legacy and make sure you've set everything correctly in the single-player portion of the guide.

TO CREATE A DOOM LEGACY SERVER:

Click on the Multiplayer... button located on the right. Click on the Server Tab above.

The only options you should change is the Server options... box located in the lower-half of the current window. But, you will see your ip address displayed on the top-right. For users who want to quickly get into the game, send that number to people who want to join. They just have to type it in and they are ready to go!

Make sure Game Mode box is set to Deathmatch 3.0 and the start map can only be E1M2 at the moment, so set it there. Make sure "no monsters" is checked.

Next, you will need to tell Doom Legacy in the "additional files box..." where TUCQ wad resides, which is recommended to be at C:\Program Files\Legacy\Cquestp2b2.wad Type that in the box.

You will hit Ok and the game will load! :wow:

However, you still need to setup Doom Legacy to give your server a name, so it can be searched on the Internet.

Hit escape to bring up your Chex Quest Gaming Menu. Move the rotating piece of Chex cereal to the option "Multiplayer" and end your current game. You can't set up the name if you are already running a basic server, so this is necessary.

Next, go to the "MultiPlayer" option again, and select the "Start Server" option.

For these options, set "Map" to E1M2, "Monsters" to No, "Deathmatch Type" to 3, and "Internet Server" to Yes. Type a Server Name such as ChexServer, and click Start!

After the game loads, make sure it says "The Server Has Been Registered On The Master Server..." If it doesn't, sometimes Doom Legacy messes with putting Internet server to no again, and forcing you to put it back to yes. I know it's annoying, but it may be fixed in the future.

TO JOIN A SERVER:

Click Multiplayer... in the Doom Legacy Main Menu. Click on the Client tab above if it isn't already selected.

LEAVE EVERYTHING HERE ALONE! If you have the person's ip address, then type it in under the "Connect to specifyied Server" box and put a bullet next to that option.

Then, just click ok and you are in!

BTW, if you get stuck on "Searching the Server..." and stays there, the ip address may be wrong, but don't worry. You can search for it!

Hit escape two times to bring up the Chex Quest Main Menu. End the game if necessary.

Now on the Chex Quest main menu, select "Multiplayer">"Connect Server" You will see two options, "Type of Server" and "Refresh". Make the "Type of Server" an Internet Server, and click "Refresh" to bring up a list. If someone is hosting, you should see a server with the name Chex in it. Select it and press Enter! You should be in!

If you have trouble, you should probably redownload all the wad files and put them in your Doom Legacy folder.

That's my explanation. Good luck!

BTW, if you have a wireless network like me, you can start a server, but your ip address displayed will be wrong. Users are forced to search for the server, so let us know what it's called, please.

Some news that you may be interested in:

Instead of renaming chex.wad to doom.wad, try renaming it to doomu.wad.

Yes. The u on the end is supposed to be there.

When the iwad is named doomu.wad, Legacy will run as Ultmiate DooM, making the fourth episode available.

This may not matter much at the moment, because T.U.C.Q. does not have a fourth episode yet, but since a fourth episode is planned, it may be a good idea to take advantge of it.

SOME IMPORTANT NEWS REGARDING MULTIPLAYER DOOM LEGACY GAMES!

I found this out today! I've had this problem myself, and figuring this out earlier would have solved problems, but I'm glad it's solved nonetheless.

You know how Doom Legacy just doesn't seem to want to connect to my computer at all except without the help of Doom Legacy? Well, I have some interesting news on how it's done.

For those of us out there who have two or more computers sharing an Internet connection, there are two things wrong with the IP address you discover. If you give out someone your IP address that is given to you by your ISP, sure they can connect, but when you have more than one computer using that IP, how does the client know which computer to hook up to. Your router doesn't know and that's why the game never connects.

There's also another IP address that your router gives to your computer, the only problem is, ONLY THE COMPUTERS THAT ARE CONNECTED TO YOUR LOCAL NETWORK ARE ABLE TO USE THIS IP ADDRESS, NOT OTHERS, so this doesn't work either.

Well, your screwed without DC, right? NOT ANYMORE! :wow:

When you have two computers who are playing a game of DC, they use a specific port that computer uses for that game.

Doom Legacy uses port 5029, and other computers connecting to that game use 5030, 5031, and so on, depending on the number of computers in the game.

Since the host ALWAYS uses the first port, you would type in the IP, followed by a colon, and then the port to connect to. In my example, it would be:

24.9.143.190:5029

Why does this work? Because the host always uses the first, because it is the first to connect, this always works. One more note, two computers CAN'T use the same port at the same time. Doom Legacy prevents this. So, if you add the port number, that port is unique to the hosts computer, and when read by the router, it connects the client to the host setting the server.

AM I THE MAN OR WHAT? :wow:

(Note: It's late, I found this out on such short notice, so what I typed may sound weird. I was just a little excited to get this news out, but is definately worth it for games played with either DC or Doom Legacy. The next question is, when is the next big CQ Multiplayer game?!)

EDIT: My bad. Doom Legacy uses port 5029, not 5232 as mentioned earlier. Like I said, I rushed saying this.

Another post regarding important information:

Do not rename doom.wad to doomu.wad when you join our multiplayer game. Why? Because in order for Doom Connector to be compatible with our games, it searches for the doom.wad file you have in your folders. It won't go looking for doomu.wad, but hopefully the next time Legacy comes out, which is soon, Doom Connector will fix this issue and look for the renamed doomu.wad.

rrppo - July 15, 2005 02:52 AM (GMT)
odd, my chex.wad runs fine without renaming

Strife - July 28, 2005 09:01 PM (GMT)
Gah, TUCQ was running fine for me until today. :veryangry: Now, for some strange reason, I get a message that says "signal_handler() : segment violation" every time I try to run TUCQ.

I have done everything correctly; I renamed the original chex file to doomu.wad (I even tried renaming it to doom and doom2), and I went to the Single Map window and selected cquestp2b2.wad as an additional mod. I press Ok and I always get that error, no matter what I do. I also tried reinstalling Legacy and reinstalling the wad files, but it still does not work!

rrppo - July 28, 2005 09:07 PM (GMT)
Any recent program installs of other stuff?

Strife - July 28, 2005 09:33 PM (GMT)
Actually, yes. Earlier today, I tried installing and using a couple of different MOD-editing programs, but I didn't like them, so I uninstalled them.

Before I discovered that TUCQ no longer worked, I had added a new music file to my custom level "outpost.wad". When I tried to test it, I got that error message, so I tried removing the music file. Didn't work. Then I tried running the plain cquestp2b2.wad file by itself, and it no longer worked either even though I didn't make any modifications to it.

Where can you download Doom Connector? The CodeImp page says 404, and I can't get Skulltag.

rrppo - October 30, 2005 11:26 PM (GMT)
It went down.

Anonymous - November 6, 2005 10:45 PM (GMT)
Can someone email me the installer executable?

maxwuofbionicle@yahoo.com.sg

rrppo - November 6, 2005 11:15 PM (GMT)
It doesn't work anymore

Lucius Octavion - November 6, 2005 11:41 PM (GMT)
Skulltag is awesome! :)

Anonymous - November 7, 2005 01:33 AM (GMT)
I don't know how to use it.

Lucius Octavion - November 7, 2005 02:09 AM (GMT)
How can you have a problem with skulltag?!!? You are RETARDED! Just kidding. :) Everyone I am KIDDING.

What exactly are you having trouble with? I am happy to help.:)

Anonymous - November 8, 2005 03:34 PM (GMT)
Getting the WAD to work. It just doesn't work.

Nevermind, I got it. I just need some players.

ChexMatch

TBOL3 - November 9, 2005 12:34 AM (GMT)
I don't like doom legicy for mac. The only way to run pwads is from pressing the ~ button, then tiping in map x.wad x being the map name. And then you don't see difrent textures if the wad has them. Not to mention it can't run TUCQ.

Anonymous - November 9, 2005 01:50 AM (GMT)
Then get a different computer for christmas.

TBOL3 - November 9, 2005 04:01 AM (GMT)
No, I have a windows as well. But mac is WAY! better. For grafics, cheaper, and much much more.

Do NOT get me started. If you wanna debate systems [and find out why Amiga is your graphics GOD], then go to the General section.

So back on topic....... ^_^

The_Green_Avenger - November 15, 2005 07:50 PM (GMT)
Hey Strife!
Still having segment violations? If so, please explain the details more fully. I used to have this problem all the time, particularly when trying to run E1M5 and E2M5. It's hard to believe, I know, butI hadn't even played The Caverns of Bazoik before two months ago. For this reason, I think I could help. Give me a ring if you need help.

Boingo the Clown - November 15, 2005 10:06 PM (GMT)
Now that I think of it, I think I did havea crash or two with a segment violation error when playing with the original Chex Quest on E1M5. It does not happen in T.U.C.Q., so I must assume that it is some kind of error in the original version of the map.

Strife - December 3, 2005 03:38 AM (GMT)
The segment violations are long gone for me. Now I have another problem though.

I have created a map that uses custom floor and wall textures (they don't replace any of the original CQ textures). When I try to run it, I get the following error message:

W_CacheLumpNum: 69 >= numwadfiles(4)

This problem occurs only when I run TUCQ in conjunction with my custom WAD. When I remove the custom WAD, the game works fine, but otherwise, none of the levels are playable, even the ones that don't use my custom textures (I get the same error message).
