Title: Good, free replacements
Description: know any?
atariangamer - December 30, 2007 08:47 PM (GMT)
I'm looking for some good, free replacements for DooM and Chex Quest sprites, sounds, textures, and graphics. I have only the Shareware DooM, Chex Quest, FreeDooM, and the Heretic Shareware. I'm looking for good sprites that REPLACE their old ones, not just give me new ones (like the new Trooper replaces the Old Trooper, not just provides the sprites). The textures the same way. They REPLACE their old counterparts (I asked this before, and I got texture packs...not what I need!) The sounds...on second though, never mind unless you have a really good one. I'm trying out this really good mod, but it requires a lot of textures ShareWareDM1 doesn't have, plus you can't -file in ZDooM if you use the shareware...

i'm lost. You want doom textures?
slimeinator - December 30, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
There's a DeHackEd file patch that comes with it that replaces most of the monsters with marines, some of which do different things, such as the imp launching rockets, the shotgun guy shooting a semi-automatic gun, and others.

Um, replica...If you don't like the doom...don't worry, I'm just trying to look at map features and styles, but its hard when the machine looks like a picture of the Commander...
Slimenator, I don't want new actors, I want replacements for their sprites! Like Chex Quest made the Trooper into a Communus, I want a skin change on every item and texture...If you know what I mean.

What are you doing this for?
I know Boingo has a good sight called the Epidermis Emporium which has loads of skins compatible with Legacy.

I found a doom mod called Knee Deep in ZDooM, and am trying to play it for structure ideas, and also for feature Ideas (like the cool intermission screen), but own no copy of ultimate doom, and can't play it to where it looks right. It looks weird with the chex quest textures. I'm wanting a texture pack that looks like doom, and replaces the old doom textures. I did get some skins of of boingo's site, but I''m wanting sprites now, like replacements for tall techno lamp and short green piliar.
Like here's some Ultimate doom Levels, and heres some new textures and sprites in an addon, and when I use that addon, I dont have to worry about changing the mapping, cause everything just replaces each other. Like In the Doom Builder, I want the number 28 to be replaced with something that looks like number 28 but different, not a new number 28 that looks different but has a number of like 2001. (object numbers now) and Techwall1 would look like a different techwall but would go together as well with the others...I kinda want to change the look without changing the map...

Oh ok. By the way, Knee Deep in Zdoom is incredible. Totally awesome mod. I can't believe how good of a job they did with it.
For textures you can just get the high res ones.

The High res is like 2 Giga bytes, so dont bother.

I saw that, but along with a note that said they were incomplete and bad (he used a different word). If there isn't a hires, how about someone just get me something like the Iwad, minus everything but patches, TEXTURE1, and pnames. thats all I need. Something that looks doom enough to stand in their place.

Two GB, Replica? Come on man, seriously, :D it's not that much its. The whole pack of Doom textures, plus Doom 1 specific textures, is only around 65 MB.
I think you can download a good version of it from
the Risen 3d site. You can also get a new version of JDRP from
here. I personally like some of the older hires versions from Risen 3D, so I actually hand picked each hires texture replacement that I liked the most.
What you do is create a folder in the gzdoom directory titled "textures". Inside that, create another folder called "doom". In this folder you put all the shared textures between doom 1 and doom 2. Now create another folder inside "doom" called "doom1". This is where you put textures that are exclusive to doom 1.

Huh, I never saw Risen3d before...Ooh, but thanks for the textures! I might have to try this port...it looks awesome!
One more thing...how hard is it to make something like KDIZD's intermission screen thing?

Sorry for double post (edited posts don't show up as new, so someone could skip right over this if I edit)
Risen3D doesn't recognise anything as an IWAD. I don't have the real games, but I do have Shareware, ChexQuest, and FreeDooM.
Lucius Octavion - January 2, 2008 10:14 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Risen3D and Jdoom both have issues of recognizing things like that. I think you actually need the real games to use them. I used to mod for Risen3D, but now gzdoom and skulltag are clearly the best two ports.
atariangamer - January 2, 2008 10:34 PM (GMT)
If you saw my post in Chex Skulltag, an old friend gave me his DooM and DooM 2 disks. So it works now. :D And good lookin' too!

Atariangamer, this post is a wee bit off topic, but there is a mapper for Risen 3D, whom I used to map with in the past. He also made 3d models for my now dead project,
Lost City II. If you look at the screenshots, you can see it was going to be something good, but it died because the port wasn't working out. Who knows, maybe I'll start it up again on gzdoom. He has made many maps for risen3D with loads of custom textures, models, and really cool stuff. Check them out here:

Checking out now...BTW...Where's that map now? In the Recycle bin, or in a hidden folder? Even in a pre alpha stage, I'd like to see your work not in CQ.
Lucius Octavion - January 3, 2008 01:48 AM (GMT)
It's all disconnected. If I ever work on it again, it will be totally new just with similar enemies, weapons, and textures. The level will be different too. Too bad doom's ai isn't that good.
atariangamer - January 3, 2008 01:58 AM (GMT)
I'm grabbing what looks good to me off that site. Only problem is...I like the risen3d engine, but I like the simplicity of Legacy's 3d mapping. Legacy had some support in the last release, It was in the boot up lines, and in the legacy.dat. I just can't figure out how. And with GZDooM...I can't figure out that thing's special features. I can't make models or textures, so a port that looks good for those features only is a waste for me to try on. Legacy is simple, with some advanced features, and ZDooM and GZDooM have alot of advanced features that could be implemented easier. And DooMsday and Risen3d doesn't support most of the things I like to do. It just makes things look good. Maybe, if Boingo finishes TUCQ Phase 2, people could mod it over to models. Cause if you do it right...a MD2 could convey a cartoony look.
Lucius Octavion - January 3, 2008 02:13 AM (GMT)
Gzdoom just seems to own everybody.
atariangamer - January 3, 2008 02:54 AM (GMT)
Yeah. All I'd have to do is show some super cool ChexQuest mapping on a really old port and that port would be the next popular thing, the way this works. Or, find a real obscure engine, and do good, then it would be top port. Its all very odd. If we really wanted to make this a established thing, we should make an engine that is reaally advanced with everything in it, and an IWAD version of Chex Quest, and it might become big again. Not just a freeware game thats pretty good, but an established milestone in DooM history...
