Description: About 3D and the mouse

PatPeter - November 19, 2007 12:02 AM (GMT)
So in the new mods will models actually be 3D? Like the Chex Ship is the same no matter where you look at it from, on that note the Chex Ship should be about 10X bigger, it should seem to be able to hold 8 Chex civilians like at the end of Chex Quest One.

Also will you be able to look up and down with your mouse?

no, well maybe. TUCQ is using GZdoom, with Model support. And it isn't posible to have you Mouse move your looks.

But they use sprites. not models.

Sprites ever 3D?

Do you mean, Could sprites be 3d?

if so, then no. Sprites are a drawing of something. lets say, a drwaing of a room, is not 3d. thats sorta of like a sprite. the way. They cannot be 3d. The way they made it look 3d, is that they used more sprites for directions. north south east west, and in between.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is possible in Doom Legacy or GZDoom.

They are two things to think about.

Not in doom legacy, but in GZdoom

Boingo has previously stated that he does not wish to use 3D models for anything other than a piece or two of scenery as they just look off in the DooM ports.

The ability to look up and down with mouse depends on the DooM port. Most should support this feature [though it needs to be activated in an options menu], since many people enjoy Quake-style control configurations.

The ability to look was included in Legacy, ZDooM, GZDooM, Doomsday, and many other modern ports. The Chex Ship, I agree, should be larger, but about the different views...an object in DooM 2 had the same thing (tall techno pillar?). so when you looked at the front, the front showed. As you walked around it , though, the pillar rotated to show the other sides. No sprites for the ship were created but for the one in the game already, but with our resident artist, Chuckker, we might be able to get him to draw some more...

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that this only happens in Freedom, not Doom 2.

If I can successfully make them, I will use models for some scenery objects. I do not plan to use models for characters however. I find that most models used within DooM mods look fake and puppet like. I myself want to continue using sprites, because of the look they allow. In the case of Chex Quest, it will allow me to maintain the hand drawn cartoon look that is so important to the game. That is very difficult to simulate well with models.

The Chex Warrior's ship will likely be redone as a model.

That is true. Using models for objects makes sense. But for characters I can see what boingo is talking about. You were going to improve the resolution of the sprites though, right, possibly hand draw them?
