Title: Help! My sound won't work!
Description: Sound FX does not work

PatPeter - November 15, 2007 01:34 AM (GMT)
Alright so I installed Chex Quest after I wanted a refresher course from my first FAVORITE game, and to my disappointment and also joy, I was able to get the music working for the first time, but my sound effects don't work. Any help?

In the DOS it says:

Choose Sound FX Card

Gravis UltraSound
Pro Audio Spectrum
Sound Blaster
PC Speaker
NO SOUND FX

I have Sound Blaster so I click that and I get:

Select Port Address
Going 210-280

Select IRQ

2
5
7

Select DMA Channel

0
1
3
5
6
7

Number of Sound FX to mix

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8

Anyone know what these are? ...Or how to find out what I need?

get T.U.C.Q mod- its somehwere on the site i linked to for CQ2 in another topic

Lucius Octavion - November 15, 2007 02:37 AM (GMT)
Chex Quest has a problem running on newer systems in the sound areas. Get The Ultimate Chex Quest for Doom Legacy.

Manny Cav - November 15, 2007 03:19 AM (GMT)
Common problem. Very common problem. Get TUCQ, like Lucius said, or download my mod and use the ZDoom source port (my mod is also a more complete Chex Quest IWAD!!! :D ).

PatPeter - November 15, 2007 06:29 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the link to your mod. Does anyone have a link to the TUCQ mod or the Ultimate Chex Quest for Doom Legacy mod?

xbolt - November 15, 2007 07:24 AM (GMT)
There you go!

And welcome to the forums! :D

Loremaster - November 15, 2007 07:41 AM (GMT)
As has been said a million times already, TUCQ will get you what you want.

However, if you REALLY want to play the original, DOSBOX will get you what you want.

First of all, those two mods are the one and the same (TUCQ and The Ultimate Chex Quest) ;), and second, it sounds to me like you haven't even visited the Fan Projects subforum.

atariangamer - November 15, 2007 04:28 PM (GMT)
I got my sound to work using the dos setup. try:

IRQ: 5
DMA:1
FX to mix:2

BUT! there is a problem with the sound creating a slowdown in game play. So either use DosBox (preset sound emulators), TUCQ, or just play with PC speaker.

Indeed. Generally, anything XP or later (Vista), you'll get problems with the sound effects either way. DOSBox, one of the mods on this site, or a source port is your answer.

So how do I get those?

Manny Cav - November 20, 2007 10:55 PM (GMT)
You can Google DosBOX, you can visit the Fan Projects forum here to see the various mods (try TUCQ!), and there are lots of source ports you can try, like Doom Legacy, ZDoom, or GZDoom. However, most of the mods here are made for a specific port.

You do know how to use Google, don't you?

What about the Port address? and what sound provider?

Alright I did this on Port 220 on Sound Blaster and it worked but lagged the game like you said, which didn't make it worth it.

Manny Cav - November 20, 2007 11:35 PM (GMT)
Yep. That's what happens. If you feel nostalgic, you can use DosBOX, but you can also try a remake mod like The New Chex Quest, The Ultimate Chex Quest, or just running the original WADs through a source port like Doom Legacy or ZDoom.

Boingo the Clown - November 20, 2007 11:37 PM (GMT)
For now you may want to try The Ultimate Chex Quest (T.U.C.Q.). I have created one download where everything is set up to run. It has DooM Legacy included, a preconfigured version of the DooM Legacy Launcher, and two different batch files, one that will run Legacy with T.U.C.Q. in software mode, and one that will run Legacy with T.U.C.Q. in OpenGL mode.

The batch files will probably be the easiest to run with at first. Software mode is basically the same as the original version of the game. OpenGL mode uses hardware acceleration, blends the pixels in the graphics a bit to reduce the pixelated look, and uses dynamic lighting (i.e. Propulsor zorch, Phase zorch, and the the large zorch ball from the LAZ Device all cast bright red light.).

TUCQp2b3_Full_Setup.zip is the full setup version.

Where can I get

DosBOX
Doom Legacy
ZDoom

? I am still new to the site, can still find my way around to TNCQ and TUCQ.

Manny Cav - November 21, 2007 12:20 AM (GMT)
Use Google to search. I'm sure they'd be at the top of the results.

Obviously you didn't read my last post.

The full setup version INCLUDES A COPY OF LEGACY AND IS PRECONFIGURED.

And here is the DOSbox website: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1

PatPeter - November 21, 2007 04:03 AM (GMT)
I'm at http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1 trying to install the Windows edition and I download it and open it, the command prompt comes up for a second and then closes, any suggestions?

PatPeter - November 21, 2007 04:13 AM (GMT)
Nevermind I fixed it, I guess Sourceforge doesn't work with Download Accelerator Manager.

But hell I can't figure out how to operate DosBOX, if you can tell me what the code is that you put in with the CDrom that would be grand.

But in the meantime I am off to download another one of those listed.

'Round these parts, we don't like bad language. It's in the board rules. ;)

If you installed everything in the default directories, here's what you type for the original game:
  • mount C C:\Chex
  • C:
  • chex.exe
This will bring you to the program. You won't get the ending or intro videos, but you can download those off of my site, in the Chex Quest Gallery. :P And if you want to browse the old Windows 95 menu, just go to C:\Chex\menu.exe ;)

If you want to run Chex Quest 2, substitute "chex2.bat" for "chex.exe."

PatPeter - November 21, 2007 04:33 AM (GMT)
Op, sorry, that is one of those border line words where it depends where you are for its ability to say.

Manny Cav - November 21, 2007 04:35 AM (GMT)
That's okay, I just want to make sure you, as a new, fellow member, understands the rules and doesn't get in trouble with the authoritay here. ;)

I'll also mention that you can press Alt+Enter to throw the window into full-screen mode.

EDIT: However, be advised of an infamous error in the first map of Chex Quest 2 that is made worse in DosBOX (i.e., instead of crashing or slowing down, you get garbage). View this thread for details.

PatPeter - November 21, 2007 04:41 AM (GMT)
Alright so this is what it reads when I put it in:

Z:\>mount C C:\Program_Files\Chex C: chex.exe
Directory C:\Program_Files\Chex doesn't exist

Even though it does

I did:

Z:\>mount h H:\ -t cdrom
MSCDEX installed
Drive H already mounted with local directory H:\

Manny Cav - November 21, 2007 04:44 AM (GMT)
Do you have Chex Quest installed in Program Files? Did you use the default install directories? Did you try using my exact 3 lines?

PatPeter - November 21, 2007 04:46 AM (GMT)
It's late where i am, so I am going to sleep, be back in 8 12 ish hours

Manny Cav - November 21, 2007 04:50 AM (GMT)
For the next time you come online: DosBOX refuses to recognize directories with spaces in the names, so it won't even read past "Program Files." You need to install Chex Quest in the default "C:\Chex" directory and type those three lines separately in that order as they appear. Letters are not case sensitive.

Boingo the Clown - November 21, 2007 06:55 AM (GMT)
The simplest thing to do (what I do) is to open the DOSbox directory in one window, and the directory of the program you want to run in a second window side by side, then drag and drop the program's icon on to the DOSbox icon. DOSbox will then run the program automatically, without you having to set anything up.

Manny Cav - November 21, 2007 01:55 PM (GMT)
I didn't think to do that. :P I like to do things the old-fashioned, hard way, I guess. :P

I need like a  face on fire lol. But for the first time ever Chex Quest has both music and FX working! Thanks guys!

How do you skip levels with DoxBOX?

Manny Cav - November 21, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
The code is leesnyder1#, with the last number representing whatever of the 5 levels you want it to be (the codes are the same for Chex Quest and Chex Quest 2).

PatPeter - November 22, 2007 09:20 PM (GMT)
How do you do the DOOM levels?

Manny Cav - November 22, 2007 09:33 PM (GMT)
Do you mean the levels in Chex Quest not meant to be played?

PatPeter - November 23, 2007 04:52 AM (GMT)
Jawohl.

And also how do you open wads that don't have the .bat or .exe? I want to play the Zorchmatch wad but don't know how to open it.

I just downloaded ZDoom, how do you add wads to the search directory?

Just downloaded Doom Legacy, says "Response file doommarqs.tmp not found!"

Manny Cav - November 23, 2007 05:30 AM (GMT)
To play the leftover Doom levels in Chex Quest, you need to know how to use the Doom (yeah, that's right, the "D" word) command line perameters. It's called warp or something. If you don't know them, I'll help you out when I can.

Zorchmatch runs as a PWAD for TUCQ (essentially a PWAD for a PWAD), and, as such, requires the Doom Legacy source port. I believe Boingo already provided you a link containing both of those in one ZIP file.

EDIT: The "doomargs.tmp" error can be fixed by simpy making a blank file with zero bytes (easily doable with Notepad) with the name "doomargs" and the file extension ".tmp" and putting that into your Doom Legacy directory.

Boingo the Clown - November 23, 2007 11:02 PM (GMT)
The version of Legacy in the zip file on my site comes with a blank doomargs.tmp file included.

Yeah I thought it was making a blank file, and when it did it didn't work, only for me to realize that I spelled it doommargs.tmp.

But I'm off to install TUCQ.

Omg TUCQ is awesome!!!

But the full instructions on how to play the DOOM levels should be here: http://chexquest.wikia.com/wiki/Easter_eggs#DooM_Levels

And Boingo there is a possibility that even though telling people how to play the ultimate CQ didn't work on the forums or your website, but it may work on the Wiki with good markup to attact peoples attention.

But yeah I'd say this thread has reached its purpose about.
