This probably belong in General Discussions, as it isn't a real computer discussion or tech request, but whatever. I voted Chex Quest just because it rocks, is rated E, and is a great FPS at the same time (with a popular fan and modding base).

Descent was one of the first 3D games I played when I was little... other than watching the neighbor kid play Doom.
It was definitely a favorite of mine. The learning curve seemed to be a bit steep for most of my friends though. Navigating through a fully 3D space proved to be kind of nauseating for some of them.

DOOM!!!
Wolf 3d and Quake rocks too and Descent is pretty good but Doom... is the absolute best! :D
Lucius Octavion - October 25, 2007 10:41 PM (GMT)
I would have chose doom for the best game, but I chose Quake engine wise. I like doom better, but Quake's, mostly Quake 3's engine is just so versatile and had a huge influence on more modern 3d games.
atariangamer - October 26, 2007 12:07 PM (GMT)
well, I chose chex quest for brain candy's reasons. It was my first FPS. On a scale,(for me anyway), it goes:
1.ChexQuest
2.Quake
3.Descent
4.Doom
5.Wolf3d
but all of them are great :D
Glassyman - October 26, 2007 07:09 PM (GMT)
However that list isn't complete. Other great FPS such as Halo, Half-life, Heretic, Quake 2, RTCW must be listed.

isnt hexen a fps shooter game as well (i wouldnt know ive only herd of it through doom sites) also are any of those games beside chex quest not rated M

Nice call Brain, I loved Decent too when I was little, the learning curve is high. But its far from fps.
Doom easily wins the bout though, I laugh at anyone who voted chex quest, c'mon now.
Then again maybe some of you arn't old enough or aren't supposed play Doom, or haven't played and beaten everyone like me.
*Re-lives fond memories of playing ultimate Doom on the Sega Saturn*
And for the love of god, don't forget Lucasart's Outlaws and the Jedi Knight games.
Along with Prey too, which is just too awsome.
Also you forgot 007 Goldeneye.
I also have a soft spot for perfect dark zero.
atariangamer - October 29, 2007 12:35 PM (GMT)
Ok...I was kinda going for the older fps's, and I didn't include hexen and heritic because it was just doom enhanced a small bit. Quake series all goes under one button. the others being mentioned are new (to me) and unplayable (by me).
I only put what I know.

Hey, this is kind of a personal opinion thing, voting for one's own favorite FPS. With a strong modding base and multiple fan-made "expansion packs", Chex Quest has a large collection of levels and game to choose from. But, again, we're just voting for our own favorites. not anyone else's. ^_^ And while I think that Doom is an overly violent game, I like it more for it's engine and modibility than anything else it has.
Lucius Octavion - October 29, 2007 08:02 PM (GMT)
All I think of Chex Quest is a Doom mod though. It's doom with a different skin essentially.

Well, this is true, but it's a pretty good mod, at that.
xbolt - October 29, 2007 11:07 PM (GMT)
Of the ones on the list, Chex Quest is my favorite. It was the first FPS I ever played, and when I first saw Doom, I thought: "Hey, this looks a lot like Chex Quest!"
Lucius Octavion - October 30, 2007 02:36 AM (GMT)
I would have to say that above all, Chex Quest is still my favorite doom mod ever.

Yes, and it's pretty good.

I definitely never considered Descent an FPS... *shrugs*
But, Ditto, ditto, and ditto.
I loved Lucasart's Outlaws! For some reason, I remember it being one of the first games I played with more freedom as far as being able to shoot at farm animals and such... Also, as you mentioned, Prey, and the Jedi Knights games were awesome. I also loved Tie Fighter.
I still play 007 Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on my N64, but I suck at the 007 controls at this point... I used to be a master.
I also played
Incoming into the ground. It's a shooter in the same way Descent is a shooter.

Neither did I. I always thought of it as a flight "sim".
PatPeter - November 15, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)
You shouldn't have put Chex Quest in there... it automatically wins. :)
Quarkz - November 15, 2007 02:37 AM (GMT)
You forgot halo
in before overrated, over hyped, and too modern
atariangamer - November 15, 2007 01:18 PM (GMT)
this was kinda dead, but...*shrugs*
some people (glassyman) thinks doom is the best.
Chex quest is this forums topic, so many would be leaned to chose it
Quarkz...I kinda said that this was for classic fps, not modern...plus, much easier to mod a chex quest or doom than DooM 3 or Halo game.

"in before too modern"
as to modding halo there are so many great tools and tutorials its not that hard at all (Halo Hack Tool, Halo Map Tools, Spark Edit, Halo Custom Edition, Prometheus [still in development])
Kuwabara - December 4, 2007 06:15 PM (GMT)
Quake, it was one of the most atmosperic FPS's I have ever played. That, and the monsters were kick-bum!
Quarkz - December 4, 2007 08:51 PM (GMT)
Quake 2- we had it on the school comps in my freshman year. I owned ninth period.
Lucius Octavion - December 4, 2007 11:05 PM (GMT)
That's cool, I've always wanted to get true combat elite on the school computers. That game totally pwns Counter Strike.
Kuwabara - December 5, 2007 01:53 AM (GMT)
The local bonkura's play Halo before, and during my Business Tech class. (My first)
atariangamer - December 5, 2007 01:36 PM (GMT)
Our computers have tracers and internet and networking blocks. We couldn't play a single game on the network (much less, install it). But our old school had the original oregon trail on the network before someone deleted the files (along with a note that he didn't like the game.) <_<
Kuwabara - December 5, 2007 02:51 PM (GMT)
Ah, you had the Oregon Trail? that is awesome! In the newer ones, I always went from Navoo to Salt Lake City (what can I say? I'm Mormon!) but I always died of like, violent dirrehea or something.. or getting bit by the fierce prairie dog.
