Title: CQ A Engine
Description: need help now!

atariangamer - September 20, 2007 12:41 PM (GMT)
What do I need for a new cq engine. I want to make a custom engine...what else is needed other than the Doom source?

I know that I really don't know...

Loremaster - September 21, 2007 05:28 AM (GMT)
LOTS of programming knowledge.

come ON guys! I really want to do this and I want to get resources before I start. Please be serious! wasn't there a "ultimate doom specs" book or something? a tutorial or something?

I thought you wanted to build a new engine from scratch, because if you are, then the Ultimate Doom specs won't do you any good.

some one, please tell me what i need! I've tried to do it my self, and I'm not doing so good. PLEASE HELP. and if the members of the forum can't, lead me to a site that can... (sorry guys, i wanna do this)

There was a book about the DooM engine waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy back that included the source I believe [or was it canceled...]. In any case, your best bet is to grab one of the opensource engine's code and take a look at it.

However, if you do NOT know how to program, or are a beginner, I would advise you first learn how to program in a language like C or C++, perhaps Java. You can't make an engine if you can't program.

Little steps...

Maybe you should ask Jaakko Keränen or Graf Zahl or something.

Or Randy Heit.

so should I make an engine from the original source code, or an open source project, like zdoom? (wait, is zdoom opensource?)

Wait, what do you mean by "making an engine from the original source code"? And, yes, I think ZDoom.org distributes the source code to ZDoom.

yes. Trying to start from scratch is

A.) difficult at best, as you'd have to COMPLETELY code everything the same way that iD did it

B.) pointless, since reuse of code is something professional programmers do all the time. The work has already been done, why reinvent the wheel?

First, though, you GOTTA learn whatever language DooM is written in. Don't use this as a learning project.

thanks! i'll try this first...
