Title: Final Chex
Description: The Plutonia Experiment clone.

Beta 6 of Final Chex has been released at my new site. Go check it out at http://cbastudios.profusehost.net/. Remember, please use either the original engine or ZDoom.

Y'all probably know about this, but I'll post it here anyway: there's a bug in the WAD which causes a crash when opening a map (level) in Legacy. Depending on which map you open, it will crash with either of these error messages:
  • signal_handler() : segment violation
  • sprframes NULL for state 12
While Doom Legacy is not the recommended port or engine, I want this project to be compatible with all engines and source ports, or at least all of the major ones. I've tried fixing the bug myself, but I can't pin down what's causing it. I'll need your help to figure out what's causing it and how to fix it.

:o . your missing a sprite.something that has 12 in it, exapmle = possA12 of something around that. it does that to me alot.

I'm almost 100% positive that's not the issue with the sprframes error. The New Chex Quest 2 and Final Chex use the exact same sprites. The New Chex Quest 2 doesn't crash on Legacy; Final Chex does. To further test this out, I deleted all of the sprites in Final Chex and loaded the ones from The New Chex Quest 2 (S BLOCKS included) into Final Chex. The crash was still there.

some times the uplaod is not 100% perfection. just look for a sprite, or you could shove all the stuff into another wad.

I was able to fix the Legacy crash on Final Chex, but only by grafting all of the material from the original Final Chex IWAD into the original Plutonia Experiment IWAD, creating a new Final Chex IWAD altogether. I may never know for the life of me why this crash was happening. I'll just attribute it to sloppy WAD editing, as I did see some odd start and end block anomalies in XWE. Why this would only affect Doom Legacy and not ZDoom is beyond me. I guess Legacy is just plain buggy.

For now, Final Chex has been spared the chopping block. I'll upload the new version soon enough, but right now, I'm busy with other things at CBA Studios, so stick with me.

As promised, I've uploaded Version 5 of Final Chex. While I still recommend ZDoom, you may now also play it on Doom Legacy if you prefer that port. You know where to get it -- at the CBA Games section on my website. :P

Nothing, really. It's just that I want it to work on as many source ports as possible. It's just a bug fix release. I wouldn't say it's a minor bug fix release, because it fixes a major crash bug that rendered the game unusable on Doom Legacy.

The status of the project had been changed to "Beta", making it "Final Chex (Beta 5)". The reason is that I'm not quite done replacing some things, and I'm still seeking help in replacing some of the Flemoids, so the project is not "complete". I've also changed some contact information (not worthy of a new version number, though), so it's recommended that you download the latest release.

Manny, The wad's map are Final dooms correct?

Manny Cav - November 2, 2007 02:26 AM (GMT)
They're from Final Doom: Plutonia Experiment, one of the games that make up Final Doom (the other is Final Doom: Evilution). I would certainly like to see replaced maps, but I can't do maps for my life, and there's a lot on my plate right now, so I'm putting what little mapping power I have to The New Chex Quest.

Cool! ^_^

Beta 6 of Final Chex is out! It's got the new 'Super Cycloptis' to replace the Flemoidus Cycloptis Tenacious, and the Tenacious replaced the horribly cobbled together and incomplete Flemoid Gyro. You know where to get it -- at CBA Studios.
