Title: Odd, quirky things I've noticed.
Description: And their explanations.

xbolt - July 6, 2007 10:40 PM (GMT)
The following is a list of odd, quirky things I've noticed over the years, and my theories trying to explain them.

(Yes, this is an incredibly random thread that doesn't really serve a purpose, other than I find these things interesting)

Odd, quirky thing #1: An object is always right in plain sight, until you go to look for it.
Explanation: This is due to an interesting aspect of the human brain. If something is there consistently, it 'fades into the background' and you no longer notice it. Take your computer's fan for example. Chances are, you didn't notice it until you read this sentence, right? So, in the case of the object you're looking for, it faded into the background, and you no longer noticed it. Then, it went somewhere, and you didn't notice it's disappearance, since you no longer noticed the object. Now, when you go to look for it, you assume it is in the same place where you last noticed it, but it isn't. You think that it was right there until you started looking for it, but it had really disappeared long before.

Odd, quirky thing #2: You are louder when you are trying to be quiet, than when you are walking normally.
Explanation: This is somewhat similar to the above. You don't notice all the noise you make while walking normally, but you are thinking about every sound you make when you are trying to be quiet. Since you notice those, and not the ones you make normally, it seems to you that you are being louder.

Odd, quirky thing #3: You can never find something that's in plain sight.
Explanation: This is because, you subconsciously assume that the object you are looking for is hidden, and so you look in out-of-the-way places, and not out in the open. But the object is in the open, and so, you don't find it.

Yeah, I've made many, many therorys on many subjects. Most of it being about Human Nature....here I thought it was only I doing that. Nice thoughts! :D

I went looking for a Tootsie Roll that I lost when I was five. I was screaming that it was right on the coffee table...and it was on my bereau.

Interesting stuff, xbolt. I always liked to think about this kind of stuff.

I have noticed that (in my experience, anyway) I can lose something, and search for it for 6 months (that's an example time; it could be 3 months, or a year), but not find it, no matter how hard I try. Then, several months later, I'll lose something else, and not be able to find it, but I'll find the first item I lost. Weird.

And, as far as not finding stuff that's in plain sight, I know a lady that once "lost" her car keys. We looked high, and we looked low, but we couldn't find them. But, as it turned out, she was clenching them in her hands the whole time.... <_< -_- :D

Dude, that's happened to me SO many times XD

Another oddity, you can be looking for something for ages, and then give up and buy another one. And suddenly, POOF! There it is!

I'm still working on the explanation...

That one is a little debatable. It HAS happened to me before, but it has also failed to happen when I lost something and bought another one. Still, that may be because I don't lose a lot of stuff that would be worth buying again.

I believe all of those are true... they have all happened to me.

A odd thing I noticed, a few years ago, allen, one of our older sisters and I were having fun when I pulled out a banana peel. We were all trying to slip on it, when allen gets it to work, but the banana peel flys out of view. a couple of years later, we moved out of that house taking most everything with us, and we never saw that banana peel again.

Now that IS odd... Hmm... I wonder if it could have biodegraded in that timespan...

Or one of your parents threw it away.

Sorry, but the obvious must go on.

Master of Nachos - July 15, 2007 05:52 PM (GMT)
rrppo's right. It's pretty obvious that it would get thrown away.

When I was 5 I tried to imitate Toy Story 2 by having all of my Toy Story toys with me and I put woody in my roller suitcase with his arm sticking out and a few years later I couldn't find him and I found my suitcase at the top shelf in my closet and I said "Nah, it wouldn't be in there." So in another year I got my suitcase down and found woody's arm sticking out of the case.

I think that this quirk of life was best said by the Rolling Stones.

No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need
