hmm the poster doesn't seem very creative compared to the last 2...i can see why edison and anthony came out with that comment but now it doesn't seem that offensive, how much acting talent can you tell from just 5 seconds?

RickyRicardo - October 15, 2003 10:46 PM (GMT)
that poster is just meh... I hope thats just a teaser poster.

quadshock - October 16, 2003 01:43 AM (GMT)
i'm impressed by how tony can look exactly the same in this poster and the first one. Same expression, same hair, same everything. before i typed this message i thought i've seen more posters but i forgot...

the poster's not bad...not very creative....but not bad. Looks very professional and simple. Kind of like the HOMEWORK cd design...there wasn't much creativity put into that yet it seemed very professional (to me at least)

I hope there would be something more symbolic in the picture though

looks like they just just stuck him in there from the first one
andy and leon need to look a bit more moody

Sandra - October 16, 2003 06:24 PM (GMT)
I can't wait to see this movie. So many mega stars. And Kelly Chan seem to look good in this poster. But I think the Heroic Duo posters are prettier.

Andy looks much better in this poster all of a sudden. That short hair of his widened his face and he looks like he put on a few pounds. Much more mature looking.

That picture of Leon in the preview clip of the Infernal Affairs III gives me the chill. Leon looks very gloomy, which kind of scares me since I have never seen Leon like that..... Leon always has the image of being warm-hearted. Anyways, he looks like the kind of people who works in office with these glasses. Although gloomy looking, he is still cute~ :)

RickyRicardo - October 16, 2003 07:45 PM (GMT)
I think hes a bad guy in the movie.

qhettocow - October 17, 2003 12:02 AM (GMT)
yes!!!!!!!!!!!! leon as a bad guy! *woOt

Sheepcat - October 17, 2003 07:48 AM (GMT)
I heard from the interview and the newspaper that Leon plays an officer who is between good side and bad side. So the audience couldn't be sure which side he is in until the end of the movie.

I am really looking forward to see Leon plays this kind of character. Maybe he has this bad side that we don't get to see often~~ :P

leonfantasy - October 17, 2003 09:16 PM (GMT)
kaka, look like everyone wants Leon to be a bad guy.

Sandra - October 17, 2003 11:03 PM (GMT)
Yup, that would be a nice change. I wonder if he could be mean and cruel in a character.

Ah_M - October 19, 2003 09:57 PM (GMT)
i think he will be the silent type of evil; cunning and strikes when you least expect :D

Tony Leung said that they have a lot of back and forth discussions about his role in the movie so that they could present something new to the audience.

Andy said that since he also will seek Kelly's pschiatric help, he learnt about Tony's love for her and he also began to feel like Tony.

Leon said that the White Dragon reminded him to be careful of the opposite sex this year.

Eric Tsang was rushing from the set of the other movie he was making and so was unable to change into white gear as agreed earlier.

Synopsis of IA3
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ultimate Showdown
INFERNAL AFFAIRS III completes the INFERNAL AFFAIRS trilogy which is destined to go down in film history as one of the most important film series in Hong Kong.

Boasting a cast more illustrious and a structure more intricate than the first film, INFERNAL AFFAIRS III is presented in a parallel time frame, 2001 and 2004, delineating what transpires before and after the death of Yan in the first film, leading to an ultimate showdown where the past and present converge and all hell breaks loose.

2004: the Worst of Time
Ten months after the murder of Yan (Tony Leung), Ming (Andy Lau) is relegated to the backseat of mundane office work, pending internal investigation. Meanwhile, a new star, Yeung (Leon Lai), has emerged in the police force. His meteoric rise mirrors Ming's very own before Yan's death.

Suspecting that, like himself, Yeung could be a mole from the triads, Ming begins his clandestine investigation on Yeung, only to find himself constantly shadowed by a mysterious cripple called Shen (Chen Daoming). He learns that not only is Shen a former business partner of Sam's (Eric Tsang), but he is secretly linked to Yeung.

Only too late does it dawn on him that he has already been cornered to a dead end by Yeung and Shen.

2001: The Best of Time
After working under Sam's wing for two years, Yan finally gains his confidence by committing egregious crimes. His first big mission is to build up a smuggling network with Shen, a mysterious businessman from China. Little does he realize that Sam actually has his own hidden agenda which will place him in great danger.

Realizing that Yan is slipping out of control, SP Wong (Anthony Wong) tries his best to get him out of the picture. Meanwhile, Yan is sentenced to mandatory psychiatric counseling by the court. The brief encounters with Dr Lee (Kelly Chen) brings temporary calm to his disturbed inner psyche. Inadvertently revealing his true identity to her during a hypnosis session, he gradually develops a special friendship with her.

When ordered by Sam to deal a final blow to Shen, Yan knows his opportunity has finally arrived. In order to gain Sam's ultimate confidence, he decides to betray SP Wong and go all the way.

Mrs Lai - November 3, 2003 03:36 AM (GMT)
Anyone know the name of Leon's character in the movie?

quadshock - November 3, 2003 09:27 AM (GMT)
i believe it's...yeung, as described above

Mrs Lai - November 4, 2003 07:17 AM (GMT)
I meant full name Quad... I'm not that dumb. :P

Ah_M - November 5, 2003 10:18 AM (GMT)
er can't read the second word; yeung ? wing
some sort of promo site is here (still so many other characters...got a feeling this film will give me headache): http://www.sanmiguel.com.hk/infernal_prom_phase2_2003/

and the synopsis just doesn't seem to fit with the scenes they shot; leon joins the police force after yan's death so how could they all gather when tony's arrested by leon? and kelly and tony kept a doctor-patient relationship throughout the first one so how could they have had that passionate kiss?!

Ah_M - November 9, 2003 09:35 PM (GMT)

Sandra - November 9, 2003 11:59 PM (GMT)
Leon's character in this movie is YEUNG KAM WING

KAM means bright prospects, bright road

WING means honor, fame

Interview with Leon.

Playing as Yeung Kam Wing, Leon was a ruthless person and did anything to crack a case. His subordinated commited suicide and revealed one link and thus began the deadly tug of war with Lau Kin Ming.

How do you see the role of Yeung Kam Wing ?
Yeung would use his own means within his own boundaries to achieve his goals. I could not exaggerate the character or be too steadfast. The role is between evil and good. It is good yet evil.

How do you portray the character ?
I have to imagine I am a policeman with lots of obstacles. It is very difficult to guess who is evil and who is not. Yeung Kam Wing actually had kind of surfaced in the first episode. Everyone was doing their job and getting adjusted to their surroundings, looking for the most correct answers. I did not design Yeung specifically apart from the director requested that I wear glasses. I based my performance on my gut feel and did not make any particular gestures or mannerisms to make myself special.

Why do you participate in Infernal Affairs III?
In a large community and a large family, I could learn from many. To be able to perform in Infernal Affairs is a good opportunity for me. I could co-operate with outstanding performers such as Anthony Wong, Tony Leung and Chen Dao Ming plus these are our first collaborations.

What do you see as most memorable in this movie ?
I enjoy the great atmosphere working with the crew. The greatest thing for us is the bond we established. This time, I have deep impressions of being serious. Being serious does not mean being nervous. The collaboration with the director was also memorable.

How does Leon face good and evil ?
Good and evil is an impression . An evil impression could also be moving and the audience would sympathize with this evil character. In contrast, that good always overcome evil would be too bland. The feeling of good and evil accumulates in a person. Some people could be very just yet exudes an evil impression. Perhaps inadvertently he has picked up evil along the way. In truth, nothing is so clear cut in this world. It depends on whether his attitude and behavior would harm others. Sometimes he may hurt others but it goes unnoticed, then it becomes good. Reverse, if many point their fingers at him, then it is evil.

What is most satisfying about making Infernal Affairs III ?
To finish the movie itself is satisfying. I would like to watch my own performance. Everyone put their heart into it since the first episode. And that is sufficient. As an actor, to be able to participate, I would like to see the result of my work. And when I see that the audience enjoys it, that would be my satisfaction.

Do you think Infernal Affairs would help the HK film industry ?
Hong Kong is very small. The feel is focused in this small place so it may not register with a lot of the viewers. But the creativity is there and I think HK movies could compare with Hollywood movies. The HK films will create a following. Filmmakers have to be adventurous. Success or failure depends on luck. Infernal Affairs gathered the strength of many good elements and could show the unity of the HK film industry. I personally believe 3 parts is sufficient . In the future, there should be other subject matters.

Article : Infernal Affairs Broke All Time First Day Box Office Records
Date 12/13/2003

The most awaited movie of the year with 6 best actors has finally been released at 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. yesterday at over 100 theatres. Total billing was HK$430,000 on the first two shows. It is estimated that the total billing for the day would exceed HK$3 Million, above Infernal Affairs opening day of HK$2.5 Million record.

Thousands Of People Lined up at Post Office
The Infernal Affairs Stamp Set and First Day Cover were available for sale yesterday for two days at the Central Post Office. The items were made available for sale at 12.00 noon but people were waiting since 6.30 am. At some point, over 1000s of people lined up, including some Japanese tourists. Even though it was crowded, order nevertheless was maintained.

Andy Lau and Kelly Chan Satisfied with their Performance
The premiere of IA3 was held at Causeway Bay JP Theatre and Wanchai Convention Center. Andy Lau, Kelly Chan, Chapman To, Lau Wai Keung, Mak Siu Fai were also present. Andy and Kelly were both very satisfied with their own performance in the movie. Kelly said,” After spending HK$200,000 for acting lessons, I felt that I have improved a lot. Even my father said so and he said he liked the crying scene the best. But Anthony Wong said that in future if I need an acting skills teacher, I should look for him. He only charges HK$10,000. I really liked to learn from Anthony because after I received the script, I realized that our roles are very similar. In the movie, I am very calm and intelligent and bright girl and I wanted Anthony to teach me how to act in roles where the heart speaks and using eye expressions.”

It was reported that Kelly was not happy that Carina Lau was in the Beijing Promotion of the Infernal Affairs Press Conference and has stole the limelight from her. Kelly was frustrated and replied, “ Why, don’t be silly. Carina was invited on stage last minute and even Carina and Tony did not know it. Tony even asked me why there’s someone between us.”

Andy pointed out that the director asked him not to use facial expressions in this movie and he would use the camera to film his mood. So he did as he was told.

MING PAO DAILY, DECEMBER 17 2003, FILM WORDS
CHARACTERS OF INFERNAL AFFAIRS 3
Leung Chiu Wai and Lai Ming Stand Out More

INFERNAL AFFAIRS and the so-called prequel INFERNAL AFFAIRS 2 are
actually independent. The former is an undercover film, the latter was
a mob boss film. Anyone who did not see the first could still completely
understand the story of the second installment. However the third
installment is the continuation of the first, the audience must know what
happened before to follow it. Viewers would even have to pay attention
to understand what is going on because the film not only has mixed up
time but the story itself also has a story. It takes a lot of work.

Simply said, the story is about police officer Andy Lau Tak Wa
privately investigating another police officer Leon Lai Ming, suspecting
him to have a secret relationship with Hong Kong mobster Eric Tsang Chi
Wai and Mainlander Chen Daoming. It involves undercover police
officer Tony Leung Chiu Wai's investigation before his death. The key of
the story within a story lies with Leung Chiu Wai. His two "head
knockings" have been the film's strongest strokes. As for the truth about
where Lai Ming and Chen Daoming are, it is not revealed until the final
tragic gunplay.

Illogical Security Department "Mess"
Very few Hong Kong films have such a twisty setup. The approach
undoubtedly is high, basically it has covered its bases. However the
biggest flaw lies in Lau Tak Wa's private investigation of Lai Ming. He
installs a tracing device in the car and even drills a hole in the wall
of the police's most confidential security department to install
surveillance device. Logically without any approval doing so would be
impossible. Lai Ming knows but does not follow up, letting the "madman"
run wild and suffering in the end due to a lack of prevention. The story
truly lacks logic.

After the box office success of INFERNAL AFFAIRS, creating the
second and third installments with stories and techniques that are not
simple are considered rare feats. Yet the third installment's highly
difficult concept should have had more time to be worked on. Now it can
only be decent in concept and details but loose in overall drama. In
addition Edison Chan Koon Hei looks more and more like Leung Chiu Wai,
forcing him to play the "young Lau Tak Wa" makes confusion hard to avoid.

Lai Ming Gets More and More Mature
Thus, even though this time the personality split of Lau Tak Wa's
character is rather well designed and his performance was completely
involved, he did not have the chance to give it any dimension. In the
entire film only Leung Chiu Wai "had drama" and "played it well". I feel
that Lau Tak Wa in INFERNAL AFFAIRS performed better than Leung Chiu Wai,
but in INFERNAL AFFAIRS 3, Leung Chiu Wai undoubtedly has more chances to
demonstrate his abilities and steals the show. His performance has
laughter within thrill, a lazy nap within intensity, which is right up
Leung Chiu Wai's alley. Lau Tak Wa's character on the other hand is too
nervous and too dull.

Strictly speaking, in the film Leung Chiu Wai is limited to self
repetition. Lai Ming is the one who truly opens the eyes of many,
obviously mature, calm and stylish. In recent years Lai Ming has more and
more depth and changes. Earlier in HEROIC DUO (SEUNG HUNG) his portrayal
of a highly intelligent hypnotist is also rather stylish. In INFERNAL
AFFAIRS 3 he also has the aura of a master. Unfortunately in both films
the character arrangements have beginning and no end. In the beginning
they seem to be full of ideas and in control. In the end they retardedly
lose control, which reflects Hong Kong film writers' descriptions of
highly intelligent, handsome heroes still lack momentum.

Famous Mainland actor Chen Daoming also cannot demonstrate his
acting abilities. He is only used to strengthen the Mainland draw. This
character seems to be evil but actually good. This film then can be
released in China, unlike the first that was only allowed to change its
ending for video disk distribution. (Part 3)

wow...thanks for the review

although improvements could be made to the film, i think the audience is being a bit too harsh about it. oh well~
