Title: Did you like Eighteen Springs at all ?

I like this movie because I like Leon Lai and Jacqueline Wu as actors. However, the story is so laden with ill fate it is very heavy and repressive. I suppose it makes it very successful.
Leon Lai was the perfect person for this movie, his very wooden and reserved character. I have met boyfriends who like him could hardly express their happiness and emotions. What a torture. (for me :D ) The movie make you want to jump into the screen and give him a kick and get him to move on and marry her.
But of course, that is not the case to be. You get tortured more along the way until even to the very end of the movie. It is so sad to hear him say that he would try to work out something and Jacqueline Wu turned it down. I wished Wu would have jumped on to it, then it would have been a happy ending. Why torture themselves ? but I guess this is 1930's in China.
I still am mad at the whole story I hesitate to buy the movie.
The good points of the movie : Leon's very reserved character when he first had lunch with her, their photo not being taken because his friend ran out of film, his first dinner with Wu's family ( I want a son-in-law like him), his giving the glove back to Wu, his smiling from his heart after he walked his girlfriend home and he leaned against a wall (now that's a real sweet looking smile there), his sharing a cake with her in the office the day after the village doctor visited and caused some misunderstanding..... and many more.
Well perhaps I will get the movie after all.
Are there anyone out there equally taken ?

Hmm haven't seen this for a long time now but do remember it being a bit too slow for me and actually found Leon's character to be quite annoying! For some reason it was slightly more enjoyable listening to it in Mandarin even though I hardly know any

Sounds like you are tuning out. :D
I have to admit, unless it is a romance comedy, I fall right asleep on the first run on his movies, at the consternation of my husband. He would say, why bother to watch if you are always falling asleep.
Man, I watch too many late night movies and action is not my favorite. But put in a slow one, I snore.
Anyway, I watched this one while it is still only 9.00 pm and fully awake so I am fully aware of all the scenes. And it struck a chord of my past. So for those who haven't experienced something close to a Leon character as boyfriend, it is totally understandable that you tune out at this movie. :P

 "Eighteen Springs"is the classical romantic movie that I feel it is the most romantic movie that I ever seen and "touch"my heart most all the time.I really "Love"this movie, although myself don't like movie which had hard drama(and I had known before that this movie had sad ending)which is the type of movie that I wouldn't choosen for watching at all,but because this movie led by persons whom I admire in "Love and the City"so I prepared myself(and also prepared my heart and my feeling well) before started to watch this movie, but when I finished from watching,I felt that this is the movie that I "Love" it "Most",it unexpectedly made me like this movie so much, can said that "Love" in this movie,I really don't know why I love this movie, afterthat I had think about this, about why I love this movie so much?after I had considered and thought about this,I found that I like this movie because Jacklyn Wu express the feeling of the character that she played very well, she express thorough her face, her speech, and also her performance,it's so natural,I can see the power of the character that she played come through her performance.Leon also played well too,I remember the scene that Leon and Jacklyn meet again after 14 years later, the expression that flow out between Leon and Jacklyn is so "touch" me, their good performances comethrough their words and behaviour,it touched me every seconds,Jacklyn could make audiences feel about the character' feelings thorough the scene that she were watching comedy movie in the cinema while her tears come out through her face(because she just know that Leon married, after she have been waiting for him for a long long time and many things happened with her) and also the scene that she saw the back site of leon and he disappear "if we were married, have son and daughter that won't be any story",I also remembered the scene that leon sitting on the car while his hand keeping the letter which Jacklyn wrote 14 years ago,he was sitting on the car to go to the house where he hope that maybe have any chance to see her again. This movie is really "Touch"my heart all the time and every times I watch it,I cried...............in the movie also has the sentence that Jacklyn said"It's really hard to love someone forever and it's really hard to hate someone forever"."Eighteen Springs" can express love without saying anyword between the 2 leading characters,it's really romantic that I felt with my heart...............
"Eighteen Springs"didn't come to my country at all till now,I went to neighbour country for find this movie,I have been know very a little of Chinese,so I stopped in evey dialogues that appear on the screen to read for eng. subtitle after finished from first time of wathing this movie and felt "Love" with this movie, although I read all subtitle in eng. but I felt that it didn't explain really those character in detail(I felt Leon and Jacklyn express much more about the thing that the character want to show more than that subtitle explained)so I began take Mandarin classes, and after I know Mandarin and listen this movie in Mandarin sound(which is original soundtrack of this movie)it's very different about the meaning of many scenes that eng. subtitle mentioned,it's more deeper in details of the feeling of character that's explain thorough it,it's really worth for me,and for now I had 2 VCDs which not original(produced in other countries),1 VCDs original and 1 DVD original

I likes Eighteen Springs, mainly because it was the first melodrama Leon did. It proved to be a real challenging role for him and he did quite well. I must admit that. Of course the right actress and chemistry had to be there and Wu Chien was perfect.
I admit to being somewhat bored with it at times but after watching it again in another perspective; it really was a good movie.
