When I watched this movie the first time, as one of the first movie of Leon Lai, I was very frustrated that they did not do a close up on him and there wasn't even a romantic scene with Jacqueline Wu. The entire movie was him running away from the cop.

However, after I watched Jacqueline Wu with him again in Eighteen Springs, I have to say this was a much better movie. It has a quicker pace and it even moved me to tears when the father was heartbroken that Leon did not want to see him and when the two met again at the telephone booth.

I noticed that when he made this movie, he was younger and thinner and therefore was easier to express through his facial expressions. Like Andy Lau, Leon seemed a bit more in character in some of his earlier movies. He reminds me of Andy Lau in Lee Rock and A Moment of Romance I where they both played the rambunctious, impetuous youth.

I especially think he played extremely well when he was the loafer lounging on the sofa at home when his future sister visits, when he teased Jacqueline Wu when he first met her at the alley and in the restaurant.

Touching is the part when he helped his father to the taxi when they headed home after his release from jai.

The message of the movie is a noble one, that if you are a gangster or an ex-convict, life would not be easy for you.

This movie is now a definite keeper.

I also have to add that Jacqueline Wu is one very good actress in her own. She is not as sad-looking as Maggie Cheung but still have the range of emotions at the flick of a finger. She is for me like the lady version of Leslie Cheung. Her performance improved the movie. Andy Lau would not be interesting enough without her. Leon Lai definitely has a good pairing in this movie and Eighteen Springs.

Haven't seen this that many times but did find it nearly as annoying as 18 Springs to be honest! I was constantly shouting at the TV 'BELIEVE THE GUY!!!' and that cop was so cocky - wanted to punch him whenever he was on.
Not too sure but I think Leon overdid a few scenes and I kept expecting Ng Man Tat to do something funny in the film but I do like Jaqueline Wu as an actress.

I wish Leon would overdo all his other scenes in his other movies. He often times stay a bit too muted (understatement). But he is definitely perfect for expression less, wooden, shy , reserved roles. I love him all the same.

:lol: I think maybe "Love in the City" is the first his movie that I watched(since I started watched his TVB's series before) and "Love in the City" is really romantic movie.I feel it in many scenes,and I really have good impressions about this movie,especially with Jacklyn Wu(her Cantonese name is Ng Sin Lin,Mandarin name is Wu Chien Lien) I really feel "touch"in many scenes,such as the scene that leon ask for the question "Will we have any chance to meet again?" while she was stepping down from the stairs and began to count the step of stairs"have,won't have,have,won't have,........." in the last she was made decision "have" by herself, also the scene she was sitting on the rock on the beach and thinking about the relationship that happened with her and leon is love or not,the scenes that she had seen leon walk-out from her(the last time that leon said he will escape from HK and won't have any chance to meet her again),and also the scene that she had chance to meet leon again when she walked out from the phonebooth and saw leon with other girl,made she misunderstood about the relationship between leon and that girl,and also the last scene of this movie,she walk from the beach which she tought that won't have any chance to meet leon again and found leon when she walked up from the beach,these scenes made my tears come down everytimes that I watched.
"Eighteen Springs"is the classical romantic movie that I feel it is the most romantic movie that I ever seen and "touch"my heart most all the time.I really "Love"this movie,although myself don't like movie which had hard drama(and I had known before that this movie had sad ending)which is the type of movie that I wouldn't choosen for watching at all,but because this movie led by persons whom I admire in "Love and the City"so I prepared myself(and also prepared my heart and my feeling well) before started to watch this movie,but when I finished from watching,I felt that this is the movie that I "Love" it "Most",it unexpectedly made me like this movie so much,can said that "Love" in this movie,I really don't know why I love this movie,afterthat I had think about this,about why I love this movie so much?after I had considered and thought about this,I found that I like this movie because Jacklyn Wu express the feeling of the character that she played very well,she express thorough her face,her speech,and also her performance,it's so natural,I can see the power of the character that she played come through her performance.Leon also played well too,I remember the scene that Leon and Jacklyn meet again after 14 years later,the expression that flow out between Leon and Jacklyn is so "touch" me, their good performances comethrough their words and behaviour,it touched me every seconds,Jacklyn could make audiences feel about the character' feelings thorough the scene that she were watching comedy movie in the cinema while her tears come out through her face(because she just know that Leon married,after she have been waiting for him for a long long time and many things happened with her) and also the scene that she saw the back site of leon and he disappear "if we were married,have son and daughter that won't be any story",I also remembered the scene that leon sitting on the car while his hand keeping the letter which Jacklyn wrote 14 years ago,he was sitting on the car to go to the house where he hope that maybe have any chance to see her again.This movie is really "Touch"my heart all the time and every times I watch it,I cried...............in the movie also has the sentence that Jacklyn said"It's really hard to love someone forever and it's really hard to hate someone forever"."Eighteen Springs" can express love without saying anyword between the 2 leading characters,it's really romantic that I felt with my heart...............
