Title: off topic question (quick)
Description: candy lo

does she sing in mandarine or cantonese? also, do you recommend nic tse's singing or is he as bad as edison?
qhettocow - April 25, 2003 04:33 AM (GMT)
she can sing in both cantonese and mandarin - but she's mainly a canto singer. Personally, I dislike Nic Tse, but I'm not fond of Edison either(though he is a cutie pie). But Nic can carry out a better tune than Edison ever will. Eddie is a superficial product made by teenage girls. For awhile, Nic was considered one too - but he has proved to the public that he can sing more than just garbage and that he truly loves music(supposedly). So all in all, Nic over Edison when it comes to vocals. Btw out of curiousity, where are you from Quadshock?
Lemon - April 25, 2003 05:26 AM (GMT)
Yes, Nic ROCKS!
Edison is no where near Nic. Have you heard Edison sing live? It's bad.
Nic could sing, write, and play intruments. Here is how he felt when his company remix one of his songs.
Nicholas Tse Ting Fung yesterday attended a radio program and blasted his record label Emperor for remixing his hit WOOT JEUK VIVA two years ago. "The dance version's first line echoed WHO for 30 seconds, the sweat on my forehead was bigger than Mariko-chan's head. People were laughing themselves to death. I complained to the company and even sent a memo in the name of my production company to tell the label to give me an advanced warning before messing with my songs."
"The trend now is 'creative singers'. Everyone says they know everything, they overly embrace 'creativity'. If I follow trends then four years ago I wouldn't have carried a guitar, performed on stage, and being made fun of as an idiot when the trend was dance. The company even forced me to dance, I refused to give in and returned to Canada."

well from the song from the movie "2002" i wasn't sure about nic's abilities...
him getting in trouble also gave me a bad impression.
i guess i can try his cd out
i'm from california, US. you?
Ah_M - April 25, 2003 08:51 AM (GMT)
haven't bothered to listen to Nic's songs since his first couple in '97, not too keen on his voice :D but I guess he is the talented type (especially these days).
qhettocow - April 25, 2003 06:37 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm not a big fan of garbage that comes out nowadays, but I can count on one hand the number of songs from Nic that I really like. And that's a lot. Here's some suggestions :
1)to live for you another day (M)
2)Leave For Sure(tho Cass Pang does a better job...)
3)Jade Butterfly
I'm from NY, but I just thought you didn't speak Chinese. That's all. ^^x
GaV - April 26, 2003 08:18 AM (GMT)
Some of nic's songs are ok, i prefer him over quite a few of the new singers these days...
quadshock - April 28, 2003 11:56 PM (GMT)
i speak cantonese fluently, but in written/read form i'm pretty weak. i don't know that much vocabulary and the history and stuff...
so i'm guessing that nic's albums are wortha buy? i have a limited budget ($200) and i'm buying "infernal affairs" music cd+dvd, "three: going home director's cut", leon now, hacken lee (everlast), william so (laughing), gigi leung (magical season), jacky cheung (where is he), S.H.E (together best collection), TWINS (happy together), Sammi chen (becoming sammi, MAYBE candy lo (what's a good album?), MAYBE kelly chen (what's a good album?), MAYBE nic tse (same Q as the other two).
any other suggestions/comments? like i said, $$ is limited and i want to make the right choice.
qhettocow - April 29, 2003 01:23 AM (GMT)
Are you going to HK? *careful* Or do you just feel like going on a shopping spree?
IMHO, I didn't like Infernal Affairs at all - so I wouldn't waste $20 on it. Most of the albums you listed are pretty old. The artists are all preparing for their new albums. But I think Kelly's Dynacarnival album is probably the best out of all that you've listed. Her concert was pretty good - better than Twins I feel. Oh whatever, it's just me anyway.
quadshock - April 29, 2003 06:01 AM (GMT)
well it's a shopping spree :-D
most of these aren't any more than like 5 months old...which isn't very old.
i watched "moh gan doh" (infernal affairs) i really like it that's why i'm buying it
i'm not familiar with this stuff...do all hk singers have a certain time period where everyone release their new albums?
Ah_M - April 29, 2003 09:54 AM (GMT)
No offence but...TWINS - what on earth?! what's possessed you to buy them??? thought you go for people who can sing properly? btw, their new album was released yesterday. and SHE's songs are quite forgettable IMO. and er, you do know that the IA soundtrack is purely instrumentals? maybe you should just get compilation album for the singers you're not so sure about.
quadshock - April 30, 2003 12:30 AM (GMT)
haha well twins will fill in the "fast songs" for me...as you can see not many of the above are still doing fast songs (i used to rely on LL but he's more of a slow-song singer now, which is fien with me).
reallY? i thought at least the infernal affairs song is on there...argh :(
SHE...i hear so much about them. but i agree, the three songs i've heard don't have much "identity" to them. kind of average. alright thanks for the advice!
btw is "happy departation" really that good?
qhettocow - April 30, 2003 02:24 AM (GMT)
Twins? They're okay. If there were ever blondes in Chinese, they would be them. =X I can't help but admit that I've been sucked into the frenzy too. They're just too cute and adorable( though the fact that they are older than me is kind of weird...) to not like. And their songs are catchy enough to get hooked on. But maybe, I'll buy their new album. i only buy *certain* albums ya' know. I dl most of them off the 'net! ^^x Shame on me, but still.
Do you mean "Ho Sum Fun Shou" when you say "Happy Departation"? Wow, that's the first time I ever head someone translate it like that. it sounds a whole lot better than "Better To Breakup". It's the song from Candy right? Yeah, I personally fell in love with that song..but like all songs, you get bored of it after its 20th run. It's a good song though. But I don't like much of her other songs from that album. So you might want to just download the song?
quadshock - April 30, 2003 05:10 AM (GMT)
haha well i just deleted kazaa, winmx, etc. from my computer b/c i decided to become a good person...but i guess if she only hsa one good song i might as well...
GaV - April 30, 2003 11:02 AM (GMT)
Candy has a new album out,
not sure if it's good tho...and kelly has a new album coming out soon too... :)
quadshock - May 2, 2003 01:16 AM (GMT)
well i just heard "happy departation" and i have come to the conclusion that she can't sing very well. The song's ok, not magnificent (this and eason's songs, i don't get what's the big deal).
I like Kelly's songs, but i have only heard the "piano+kelly" stuff...no fast songs, no other types of songs. hmmm
qhettocow - May 2, 2003 01:53 AM (GMT)
It will grow on you. I like many of Kelly's songs, but most of them I get tired easily. Sometimes, I feel her voice is too high pitched that it becomes unpleasant...
quadshock - May 2, 2003 04:48 AM (GMT)
grow on me as in "it will get better as you listen to it" or did you mean something else?

actually, i gotta confess that i got all of twins albums (downloaded though :P) but they only plug the best ones so happy together is a wise choice.
yeah, that's why i checked out their compilation album, quite confused by their popularity but that's just me...waiting for F4 to release one now
agree with you quadshock, peaceful break-up is a nice song (very popular karaoke type) but candy's voice - hm, not that keen on it. the song on her new album '3 corner mark' is quite good too but her voice lets it down a bit. :ph43r: *avoids flying missiles from Mrs Lai* :ph43r: (she likes candy lo)
quadshock - May 2, 2003 11:10 PM (GMT)
haha if she really really likes candy lo then you better have a shield or something...
qhettocow - May 2, 2003 11:56 PM (GMT)
Uhm...anything I can do to change your mind about Candy's singing abilities?
Some suggestions:
1.)Dream For you - Doi Nei Fot Meng
2.)Like Love - Hei Foon Loon Ngoi
3.)Warm Color(?) - Loon Sik
But if still "neh" bout Candy, check out Denise Ho Wan Si. They're a little bit similar. I like Denise as well. And yes, the more u listen to a song, the more it "grows" on you.
quadshock - May 3, 2003 07:53 PM (GMT)
which one grows on you...kelly or candy?
qhettocow - May 4, 2003 02:11 AM (GMT)
Candy more. Kelly's songs are more "catchy-feely" in my opinion. So I either like them or dislike them right away.
quadshock - May 4, 2003 03:29 AM (GMT)
well in order to hear them i'll have to know the actual chinese names...do you have them?
quadshock - May 4, 2003 03:38 AM (GMT)
i have another question not related to LL...what's an SACD? and AVCD? i'm so confused...

| i have another question not related to LL...what's an SACD? and AVCD? i'm so confused... |
until Leon releases them, i won't be that clear on what they are exactly but SACD is a super-audio cd and AVCD stands for audio vcd.
oh yeah, much prefer denise to candy tbh.
i have more of a preference to kelly's earlier stuff; sing mung ching chun, shui yuen fong sau, dui nay tai joi fu, ngor wui kwa neem nay, yut tsai hun may zhi yun yao nay, etc. yau fook hay is her most recent one that i like.
quadshock - May 6, 2003 11:49 PM (GMT)
are audio vcds the ones where you have to skip some tracks because it's an audio file? those are annoying.. > <
i wonder how SACD's are different...
qhettocow - May 9, 2003 11:49 PM (GMT)
I think AVCDs are the annoying ones where some cd players won't play them because they contain videos. =X Some compact discs have videos built into them. Those stink 'cause the people whomass produce them are too cheap to burn them onto another disc. =X
Yeah, I'm fond of most of Kelly's older songs as well. "Have Luck" is one of her nice recent ones. I don't like most of her duets with other artists. Her voice isn't very compatible with others I think. Like the one with Andy is pretty not nice. =X
Oh yeah, do any of you know any pay download ringtone sites for Chinese pop? thanks.
quadshock - May 10, 2003 05:24 AM (GMT)
ack i hate those cds! you have to skip like every other track
Kelly...i think her singing is kind of average. She's not the type that i can recognize while listening to a song. If you sent me a new LL song without telling me it's LL, or do the same with a jacky cheung song, i can still tell that it's LL and JC. Kelly just...doesn't have that unique voice that captures my interest
GaV - May 10, 2003 02:21 PM (GMT)
actually i can tell her voice quite easily...
her singing and some songs of hers are sometimes too high...but yeh i like her alot, her music is quite good...her 'babycat' album wasnt too bad
qhettocow - May 11, 2003 12:37 AM (GMT)
Yeahhh...too high. I saw the Leslie tribute and her voice was too high. =X
GaV - May 11, 2003 08:19 AM (GMT)
makes it hard even for her fans to sing some of her songs too
lol...
Ah_M - May 11, 2003 06:11 PM (GMT)
yeah, her voice is quite distinctive...i wonder if Leon and Kelly's voices would suit each other? honestly, it's a crime that they still haven't done a duet together!
quadshock - May 11, 2003 09:49 PM (GMT)
what 'big' celebrities HAS he done duets with lately? i can only think of baba but she's not that famous...
qhettocow - May 14, 2003 01:29 AM (GMT)
If I'm correct, Leon doesn't really "do" duets. Good question, why doesn't he sing with other artists? I think if he sang with Kelly, their song would be better than the one with her and Andy! ^^x
Ah_M - May 14, 2003 10:38 AM (GMT)
:( Leon hasn't done ANY proper duets since joining Sony :( there's Coco, Cass (they did that CNY song for TVB though but not the same), Candy, Mango (ok maybe not), is it so difficult to make happen?
just realised that he has actually done quite a few duets in his Polygram days;
Priscilla Chan (2)
Vivian Chow (2)
Vivian Lai (1)
Jacky Cheung (1)
Faye Wong (1)
Alan Tam (1 or 2)
Hacken Lee & Grasshoppers
Shirley Kwan has featured on a couple of Leon's songs too and then there's all those songs with various Polygram artists.
hmm that Kelly & Andy duet, only heard it once a long time ago, is it really that bad? i'm sure it got best duet award or something...
qhettocow - May 17, 2003 01:28 AM (GMT)
Yes. Best Duet of the year of 2001 i think. Not quite sure. Personally, i dont like it.
Sandra - July 29, 2003 01:35 AM (GMT)
There was a discussion about SACD, DSD and etc at the following link.
http://www.hkvpradio.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=244The latest I learnt from the experts is that XRCD is the best of the lot but they are usually priced at minimum $30 each.
quadshock - August 5, 2003 04:47 AM (GMT)
do singers have to be in the same company (sony, eeg, etc.) to be allowed to do duets?
