Title: Westlife & Girls Aloud go head to head

WESTLIFE AND GIRLS ALOUD GO HEAD TO HEAD

A year ago they easily saw off Popstars: The Rivals act One True Voice - but now Girls Aloud are mixing it with the big boys. For Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Cheryl Tweedy will go head to head with boyband Westlife on November 17 in what's set to be one of the biggest chart battles of the year. In the red corner are Bryan McFadden, Kian Egan, Shane Filan , Nicky Byrne and Mark Feehily with their cover of the Barry Manilow weepy Mandy. And in the blue corner are Girls Aloud with their version of the Pointer Sisters' 1984 hit Jump.

Bizarrely, both bands are managed by Louis Walsh. But the Popstars judge, who clearly has a conflict of interest on his hands, reckons the lads will win and dismissed his girls as mere "competition winners". The outspoken pop bigwig reveals: "I only found out myself yesterday that theyre both releasing singles on the same day. But I think it will be Westlife who get to No 1. "The girls are competition winners, that's all they are. Now they've got to serve their apprenticeship to prove themselves. Theyve got to mature."

The chart battle will also reveal whether the bands popularity has waned since Cheryl, 20, was found guilty of assaulting toilet attendant Sophie Amogbokpa. However, it could be that neither group will get to the top spot as Fame Academy winner Alex Parks is also set to release her single, Maybe That's What It Takes, on the same day. Last night an insider revealed: "Its a big week for single releases with the country's biggest artists going hell for leather.

"But the real race will be between Westlife and Girls Aloud. Westlife havent had a No 1 single for some time and they've got a huge fanbase - so will be going all out to clinch the top spot." But we think the girls are in with a good chance as their energetic track is the theme tune to Love Actually, starring Hugh Grant and Martine McCutcheon, which hits the big screen the same week. And Louis insists the girls - who are playing Liverpools A Bright Day gig tomorrow night - arent worried about facing his other proteges head on. "I dont think theyve ever been happier," he tells us. "They all get on great and theyre working hard. We're already planning their second album."

Hmm, good for you. I started with no glasses, then had to wear some and unfortunately my eyes are getting no better but worse

Ninsi - November 3, 2003 05:10 PM (GMT)
Awwww, i'm sorry to hear that, but at least you can still see :)

bittersweet me - November 3, 2003 05:13 PM (GMT)
<_< no good point. Forget about it. You're right (I hope it stays like that) :P

My eyes are what I need the most. I couldn't live without them.

Ninsi - November 3, 2003 05:14 PM (GMT)
yeah, most ppl cant imagine living without their sight, and yet there are perfectly happy blind ppl :P

bittersweet me - November 3, 2003 05:20 PM (GMT)
That depends on what is important for you. I love beautifull things, it's just like that. I can't imagine living without seeing beautifull pictures or a pretty face or the sky.

Ninsi - November 3, 2003 05:22 PM (GMT)
yeah but if you did indeed wake up one morning and hadf no longer your sight to rely on, then you would find beauty in different ways, you would find beauty that before yoor loss, had been invisible to you

bittersweet me - November 3, 2003 05:28 PM (GMT)
I wondered about that very often. and I know that there is more beauty than what you can see. But that doesn't make the loss less painful.

Ninsi - November 3, 2003 05:32 PM (GMT)
have you ever tried closing your eyes, upon a field, and just listen to the wonderfull sounds of nature. or tried to go out in the silent hour and closed your eyes and just HEARD the silence? Silence can be a really beautifull thing, if you take your time to notice. And when you hear a beautifull song, isn't it tempting to close your eyes and let the tones lead your inner eye on adventures?

bittersweet me - November 3, 2003 05:34 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it does, that's why music and sounds are so important. Still they're creating images, images that I want to see fulfilled.

Ninsi - November 3, 2003 05:36 PM (GMT)
I must say, I'd rather loose my eyes than my hearing, but maybe that's coz I got a low hearing?

bittersweet me - November 3, 2003 05:38 PM (GMT)
We're always afraid to lose what we got least. I guess we're trying to treasure it.

Ninsi - November 3, 2003 05:41 PM (GMT)
I wouldnt say i fear it, but I'd feel a sting if I had to give up on my music and fairytailes

bittersweet me - November 3, 2003 05:43 PM (GMT)
That shows that you know what is important. I do fear it.

Ninsi - November 3, 2003 05:53 PM (GMT)
well, there's nothing wrong with fearing as long as you dont let the fear take over your life :)

Sal4shane - November 3, 2003 09:23 PM (GMT)
