Title: Windows, Mac or Linux?

@ztech - September 2, 2007 07:48 PM (GMT)
Windows XP for me.

It's terribly conformist, I'm aware of that, but Microsoft products are the only thing I've ever known in all my computer-using life: I'd have trouble adapting to anything else. And anyway I'm quite satisfied with it.

Same here, though I´ve ordered a new comp and it will have vista pre-installed on it. Seems to be standard these days :). Dont know very much about computers, I have friends for that :P .

Spire - September 3, 2007 10:44 AM (GMT)
Me? I'm Mac user.

Oh yeah, you laugh now but once your over-used systems collapse under sustained virus assaults then we'll see who's laughing. Muahahahaha!

Burro Boskov - September 3, 2007 12:38 PM (GMT)
What Spire said.

I do concede though, PC's are a lot better for Video Games, and most applications are made for them. But then again, so are most Viruses.

Then again, that is what anti-virus software is there for :). There is always the possibility, but the risk isnt that big.

Burro Boskov - September 3, 2007 05:37 PM (GMT)
But, you have to agree that the chances are higher with a PC than with a Mac.

But you can just do so much more with a pc.

True, but that costs money. Money that Mac (and Linux) users don't need to spend. This is mainly why, unlike a lot of mac users, I don't encourage PC users to make the switch ;)

Such as?

On the flip side, Macs are a good deal more expensive compared to similarly powered PC models. So, there's that.

I think that the notion that Macs are "more user friendly" is idiotic. I hate the Mac toolbar with the little bouncing icons. The windows start menu is far superior in terms of organization and ease of use. At least, that's my opinion. I think the whole Mac "user friendly" idea came from housewives who thought that the whole round bubbly look of the Mac was cute.

Discuss. ^_^

In my personal opinion, Macs are like indie rock: overrated by people who are proud of not being part of the mainstream.

Given that Macs were clearly defined as more user-friendly right from the the start, long before the 'cute shape' came about. They were also running a graphical user interface while PCs were still running text-based interfaces (e.g. DOS) which you will have to admit is easier to use, which is were I suspect their reputation originated. They also focus much more on 'drag and drop' methods of software (un)instalation, simpler than running install paths and wizards.

The advantage the Dock menu has is that it's entirely customisable (again through simple drag and drop), so you can arrange it how you like and put whatever applications you use a lot there just a swift single click away rather than having to wade through the massive list of entries on the Start Bar.
I speak from several years experience with PCs when I say that navigating the Mac Hard Drive is much simpler and more fluid then the My Computer on PCs.

Mac computers are also easier to set-up when first baught and have quite a bit of good basic software and applications as standard, so they can pretty much be used straight out of the box. You start with good music playing(iTunes), music editing and recording(Garage Band), Photo storing and editing(iPhoto), movie editing and storage(iMovie), DVD writing(iDVD) and basic wed page maker (iWeb) plus more. Safari is also a superior web browser than IE (although it's hardly unique in that respect).

Sure, if you're used to PCs then you're unlikely to see much improvement, but if you're not then it is a lot simpler to understand and get to work.

In that case then PCs are like Club Dance, overrated by people who'd rather conform with what most people like than risk being seen as different ^_^

Indie rock is awesome. Don't make me restart the music thread to talk about some bands I've just learned to love. I was already tempted to do so, y'know.

I'm a XP man, me. I find Linux to be byzantine and inaccessible and like gaming too much for macs. This is NOT to say that Macs are bad for gaming. They are not. However, there is oftentimes a lag between a game being released on PC and on Mac, and the technical support is rarely as good.

My girlfriend uses a Macintosh, though. *shrug*

As for accessibility, Mac-PC, much for a muchness. About the same really.

As said, what are friends for? :P Have never paid for a anti-virus program and probably never will. One can get it free off the net so... B)

Most of the new PC´s jave most programs pre-installed already. Plug it in and your good to go :). I´ve heard that vista makes things even easier.

Windows is best by epic proportions. Vista has a lot of work that still needs to be done to it, I recommend (especially to those of you who enjoy gaming) that you keep your computers on XP, it's cheaper and Vista will just hinder your gaming capabilities as it hogs RAM and other components.

Luc_Arkhame - October 16, 2007 06:58 PM (GMT)
XP for me right now; no particular reason why, just had the same PC for a while now and seen no reason to swap it out, old girl still works after all.

I really don't have a preference as to my OS. I've tried out Macs, I've used PCs, heck, I've even taken a look at Linux once or twice. They all have their pros and cons, it's all about what makes your life easier.

Except Vista though... it is teh sux.
