Leeching on to this topic,
Can a captain be a bsb with a lance?
I dont thinks so but a blueshirt convinced me otherwise however he was talking about brettonnia.

As a rule, Battle Standard Bearers are not allowed to take any additional weapons or a shield, as they need both hands to carry the standard. They can only be upgraded with light or heavy armour and a steed (barded or non-barded). Bretonnian BSB's come with a lance, but this is an exception to the rule.

Cheers,
DLJ

And surely handgunners arent a parent unit?

Wrong. They come only with heavy armor and they're not allowed to have a lance.

I don't see why a BSB couldn't have a lance or a spear, since those weapons take only one hand. But it's the way the rules are made. <_<

I wonder if a Bretonnian BSB could take a magical lance, though...

My thoughts exactly. I doubt handgunners can have detachments.

They are state troops and benifit from all rules concerning state troops
so they can have detachments

If one cant have a mundane version of a weapon, then usually one cant have a magical version of it either.

This has went well off topic I was enquiring about detachment rules for the empire. No where in my original post did i mention Bretonnian.

Burro Boskov - August 18, 2007 05:52 PM (GMT)
Yes well all knight's are evil gits, who are obvious trying to compensate for something by waving around large sticks and trying to make themselves taller then everyone else.

[/grumble]

Just spent a day battling an allied Brettonian and Empire force. So many 2+ or 1+ armour saves. Oh, and the empire guy also had a steam tank!

Sure the posts went off topic, but it was on topic off topic, rather than my post so far which has been off topic completely. Yet somehow slightly relates to the topic.

And now for something on topic-

I think the amount of special rules the Empire has for their infantry units is a little unfair. Combi charging isn't that bad, because if someone is foolish enough to let them selves get flanked by a unit it's their fault.

But for the stand and shoot rule, its very powerful, espicially if the parent unit is a ranged unit, and so is the detachment.

If the paragraph talking about BSBs in the Bretonnian book is the same as usual, with something to the effect of "may not take extra non-magical equipment but for light or heavy armour as appropriate", then, yes, magical lances are allowed.

As for the fairness of Empire special rules, I can't comment on it, having only played Empire once and being righteously slaughtered very early on in the game.

Again, if he cant have a lance, how come he can have a magical one? Doesnt make any sense  .

Yeah, it is a bit strange. There's also the question of why a BSB can't have a magical shield if they can have a magical weapon. Just another one of life's mysteries, I suppose.

Benedictus - August 19, 2007 10:39 PM (GMT)
Yes, Handgunners can have a detachment. It is very common to see 10-strong units with 5-strong detachments, especially in firestorm of death armies.

BSBs can take magical items all they want, with the usual restrictions on a fighting character (no dispel scrolls, 50 points limit, etc). The fact that they cannot have a mundane lance, but can have a magical one? Magical weapons are usually lighter than mundane equivalents, due to magical energies or some gobbledeygook.

@ztech: YOU try carrying a ten feet long pole in each hand, keeping one vertical and the other horizontal and see how well YOU do.

Thragka: Why can't they have an enchanted shield? 'S far as I can tell they can.

Tyrion - August 20, 2007 12:51 PM (GMT)
What does the BRB say on this matter? Dont have mine nearby unfortunatly :P .

Uhhh ... on further research, it appears that this point is kind of ambiguous. Looking at the lizardman book, it reads "They may not carry any non-magical weapons, nor may they use a shield". I had always taken this to mean that they couldn't take any sort of shield, magical or not, as the words "non-magical" refers only to weapons in this case.

However, the new greenskin book makes no reference whatsoever to shields, just saying "no mundane equipment that's not armour unless it's magical". Under that condition, it looks like magical shields are allowed.

So, sorry, my mistake.

Benedictus - August 20, 2007 02:33 PM (GMT)
That would mean no magical shields, but I think that must be a Lizardman-only thing. Certainly I've never encountered such a thing in Empire or Bretonnia.
