Title: Favourite model for each range?
Lord of Nonsensical Crap - July 6, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone. As the title above asks....what is your favourite model in each Warhammer range (excluding 40k, LotR, and all the other games, for now)
My votes:
Beasts of Chaos- Dragon Ogre Shaggoth
Bretonnians- (undecided)
Dark Elves- Witch Elves.:D
Dwarfs- the Lord with great weapon (you know, the one holding its axe down and eyeing the enemy grumpily)
Empire- (undecided)
High Elves- from the current range, I'd have to say Imrik (with the Phoenix Guard in close second)
Hordes of Chaos- the upcoming plastic Spawn (plastic Chaos Warriors in second)
Lizardmen- Kroq-Gar (and his wonderful Carnosaur)
Ogre Kingdoms- the Pirate Maneater
Orcs & Goblins- Squig Hoppers (funniest models ever!)
Skaven- proabably the plastic Rat Ogres
Tomb Kings- Ushabti
Vampire Counts- (undecided)
Wood Elves- the Wardancer Highborn (the greatsword Highborn comes in second)
What about you guys?

Lizardmen - the Slann. One of the few Lizardman models I don't own, funnily enough... while I loves it, I already have a 5th Edition Slann, and I'm not going to buy a whole new £20 model just because of a change in style. Plus, the 5th edition one is a lot more practical, as it's a lot lighter, and so doesn't crush flying bases beneath its mighty bulk.
Skaven - Lord Skrolk. While on the whole GW sculpting has come on a great deal since 5th edition, there are some 5th edition models that just make everything else pale in comparison to their aura of win.
A close second is
Ikit Claw.
Bretonnians - the Green Knight. By far.
HoC -
Baudros. One of the few GW dragons I like. But any of the Chaos Warrior-style minis (Archaon, Crom, Chaos Champion on foot, Knights, current Warriors) comes a close second.
BoC - the current Beastlord minis (additional hand weapon or great weapon, doesn't matter).
Empire - Greatswords.
O&G - 's got to be the new Azhag.
Vampire Counts - if they made a Konrad model, I'd start an army. But failing that, I'll have to settle for Mannfred.
Von Carsteins. Accept no wimpy 'oooh, I have a
different bloodline' substitutes.
Wood Elves - the Highborn with the horned falcon helmet. Is that a limited edition model?

For some races, I haven't been able to decide...
Beasts of Chaos Dragon Ogre (basic one, not Shaggoth) and Centigors
Bretonnia Pegasus Knights
Dark Elves Assassins and Executioners
Dogs of War Al Muktar's Desert Dogs and Vespero's Vendetta
Dwarfs Grudge Thrower
Empire Emperor Karl Franz
High Elves Phoenix Guard and Tiranoc Chariots
Hordes of Chaos Lord of Tzeentch and Mounted Daemonettes
Lizardmen Ancient Scar-Leader Kroq-Gar
Ogre Kingdoms Meh, all are ugly... Let's say the pirate Maneater
Orcs & Goblins Goblin Warboss on Wolf
Skaven The Grey Seer with a staff in the right hand
Tomb Kings Tomb Scorpion and Casket of Souls
Vampire Counts Blood Dragon vampires with great weapon
Wood Elves Glade Riders and the dragon-mounted Sisters of Twilight
Spire - July 6, 2007 11:17 PM (GMT)
Beasts of Chaos: Dragon Ogre Shaggoth. Love it, it's everything it should be in a model
Brettonia: 6th edition Damsel on foot. GW aren't generally great with female models, but with Bretts they actually do a good job, this particular one is excellent.
Dark Elves: Black Guard. If I had ever collected Dark Elves, I'd have taken a unit of these guys just for how they look. Best looking evil elite unit out there.
Dwarfs: never really cared for this lot to be honest.
Dogs of War: The Dark Shadows miniatures. I know they're completely useless now except for conversions but dammit I liked them.
Empire: Again, not a big fan but the new Heavens Wizard looks rather good.
High Elves: Stormwing (5th edition Griffin ridden by Eltharion). I've never been very impressed with GW's attemepts at winged monsters (especially their dragons) but this one was something. It was the best griffin they ever produced by a long shot, the best glimpse they gave a good winged monster. Sorely missed.
The 6th edition Phoenix Guard also deserve a mention.
Hordes of Chaos: The 6th edition champion with two hand weapons. Best hero on foot they ever produced.
Lizardmen: The Carnosaur. Kroq'Gar is rather naff, but this beasty really does look like a monster. My favourite conversion of all time (the dragon model at the back of the Brett army book) used this as a base model.
Ogre Kingdoms: pass
Orcs and Goblins: Never really liked the green guys. The new edition, while an improvement, hasn't changed my mind.
Skaven: As above.
Tomb Kings: Tomb Scorpion. Given how much GW suck at undead models, it's a wonder they produced anything good at all.
Vampire Counts: None. GW really don't do undead models well.
Wood Elves: This lot however, they do briliantly (barring the great stag obviously). I'd say the Way Watcher kindred hero wins-out in th end, but not by much.

Orks - pass, never been fond of them.
Space Marines - Dreadnaught
Tau Empire - Commander Farsight
Tryanids - Raveners
Witch Hunters - Sister's Repentia

Beasts of Chaos The Beastlord with the double-handed axe held behind its head
Bretonnia Bretonnian Lord with axe.
Dark Elves Beastmaster
Dogs of War Hengus the Druid
Dwarfs Dwarf Lord with winged helm leaning on axe. What? I like axes ...
Empire Metal Wizard
High Elves Phoenix Guard. Anything but Swordmasters, really.
Hordes of Chaos Champion of Nurgle
Lizardmen Any of the skink heroes that look as though they've just smoked something illegal. I also get a giggle out of any Slaan that's leaning sideways.
Ogre Kingdoms Tyrant
Orcs & Goblins Night Goblin Warbosses ... heehee ...
Skaven I honestly don't know here
Tomb Kings Settra
Vampire Counts Blood Dragon on Winged Nightmare
Wood Elves Greatsword Lord
@ztech - July 24, 2007 02:46 PM (GMT)
You seem to like character models, Thragka. ;)
Spire: it's true that the Eldar range is one of the most beautiful GW ever made. They have so much variety in their appearance, as compared to Space Marine models that all look pretty much the same. The Dark Eldar range is awesome too, in my opinion: they combine the grace and beauty of Elves/Eldars with cruel blades and sharp edges, just like the Dark Elf range. The Necrons are cool-looking as well.
Ugliest range? In Warhammer 40 000, I hesitate between Chaos Space Marines, Orks and Tyranids. In Warhammer Fantasy, the Ogres win hands down (followed by the Skaven and the Vampire Counts). In general, I hate beastly-looking models: the Chaos Spawn and the Ogre Butcher almost make me throw up. I prefer beautiful and graceful thing, even if they're evil (like Dark Elves and Slaaneshi daemons).

Yeah, I hadn't realised the amount of characters I was putting down. I suppose I like things that stand out.

Tyranids- plastic Carnifex
Witch Hunters- tie between the Living Saint and Inquisitor Karamazov
@ztech: As a Dark Eldar player, I disagree with you: yes, some of our models are awesome, but when you factor in the crappy Hellions, Mandrakes and Reavers, our range isn't that awesome. That, and our basic warriors break too easily (those bayonets cease to be very quickly). I'm hoping the vast majority of the range is completely redone one day. I agree on the Craftworld Eldar, tho: I'm tempted to start a Craftworld army for the models alone.
Thragka: I think GW intentionally makes their char models the most awesome in their respective ranges.

I've collected a Dark Eldar army myself, and I never had any problems with the basic warriors' bayonets. Then again, I'm insanely careful with my Warhammer miniatures, some people think I'm just crazy. I get nervous whenever anyone other than me even touches one of my precious models.
Personally I think Hellions and Reavers are superb. Mandrakes, not so much.
