If it doesn't say they're light cavalry, then they're heavy cavalry.
I would like to know, just out of curiosity... Do they get the +1 armor save bonus for cavalry? They're not mounted, but they're on cavalry bases...

They are not fast Cavalry, and they do not gain the +1 armour save- says so in the Beasts of Chaos rulebook. Hope that helps.

On the plus side, they are base S4, so their thrown axes are S5, which is pretty damn nice. Overall, I still think I prefer marauder horsemen with throwing axes though. 360 LOS, march & shoot, rally from voluntary flee and still march & shoot... oh yeah. heh.

Do you take Centigors or Marauders just to throw axes?
Centigors get two S5 attacks when charging and they have T4. That is sweet.
Plus, the mini's are the second-coolest of the Beastmen range, right after the awesome-looking Dragon Ogres (not the Shaggoths, just the basic ones).

Well, my army is mostly mortal, so I don't go for the Centigors, actually.
I DO, however, have 3 units of marauder horsemen in my army. All 3 units are identical: 5 horsemen, musician, Spears, Throwing Axes, Musician.
They're S4 on the charge, have a 5+ save, fast cav, and the thrown axes are S4 too. I know many will debate the axes, but I find I get a LOT of use out of them. It lets them actually do something useful without having to charge anything. I've lost count of the number of times they've removed a rank bonus off a tough infantry unit without ever even getting close to getting in combat themselves, they just made it easier for the knights on a subsequent turn.
Plus, no one really expects 3 sets of missile troops in a CHAOS army, so it gets my opponent reacting and adjusting their planning on the fly, which to me is a good thing.

Also a good thing about centigors is that they may move through difficult terrain with ease. Somewhat compesates the fact that they arent fast cavalry.
