Title: Sons of Guilliman Redux
Description: Or rather, they're back

Khrangar - January 20, 2007 03:07 AM (GMT)
A month and a half later from when I completed the torso and legs, the dreadnought is finished!

Here's a leaning back pic of him, it was the only way I could get him to stay up straight. I'll glue him later.

Onto the arms.

I've also finished the guns for the marines and am currently working on their backpacks which are a pain to paint.

More updates soon.

Dangit, Khrangar, you've just reminded me of how badly I want a Venerable Dread for my Crimson Fists! Thanks a lot! ( :D )

Looks good! What paints did you use for the parchment/skull and the metallic bits? I'm guessing the skull and halo are from the Inquisitor Eisenhorn model, right?

Khrangar - January 20, 2007 03:17 AM (GMT)
The parchment/skulls were done starting with Bestial Brown base and mixing Bleached Bone in until only Bleach Bone is used. The metal is Boltgun Metal, Black Ink, highlights with Chainmail and Mithril Silver.

The haloed skull is indeed from Inquisitor Eisenhorn.

Very crisp artwork. Nicely done!

@ztech - January 21, 2007 02:38 AM (GMT)
A darker shade of blue would have been more beautiful, but the painting is very well done. The details are absolutely magnificent. The Dreadnought is a competition-level masterpiece.

All you need now is an arm for the 4th marine of Tactical Squad 2.

Khrangar - January 21, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
Thanks for that @tech.

As for the darker shade; they're an Ultramarines successor chapter and so use UM Blue as part of the quartering. I didn't make up the Chapter, GW did, so I am following how they painted them. As for the arm, it's finished now and all I need to do is paint his shoulder pad and he'll be done, excluding backpack of course.

Nice. Can't wait to see your full army.

That's it: you're constant pic-posting is making me jealous. I am finally going to get around to opening a photobucket account and posting my own army pictures (at least, the ones that don't look like crap).

Khrangar - January 26, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
I have finished the claws for my Assault Marine Veteran after giving him a refit from his old power fist and pistol combo.

I've decided to do less backpacks at a time to save my sanity. I plan to paint them 2 at a time so that it's more manageable. There are 3 in this pic because I stole one from my test model guy.

Nothing more mind destroying then doing loads of shields/backpacks...

success!

Khrangar - January 30, 2007 04:12 AM (GMT)
Shields are fine since they paint quickly, backpacks are another story all together.

6 Backpacks in a day is my limit I think and it's all thanks to having 1 hour of class today.

Anyway, here's the last set of 2.

3 more of the SM backpacks and then the tactical squads are finished, then it's on to the Veteran Squad and Chaplain, who will have CSM backpacks.

You really paint quite a lot. Looks really good! Keep up the good work :).

Khrangar - February 1, 2007 04:05 PM (GMT)
I've finished the last of the standard SM backpacks and am now on to the CSM ones, possibly with some converting involved, we'll see.

Here's the last 3 of them.

I'll have a shot of the army so far, minus the vets, as they don't have backpacks yet.

@ztech - February 1, 2007 06:11 PM (GMT)
They're nicely painted and I understand you to be proud of them, but to tell the truth, I think they all look the same (no offense meant). You should post a final pic of all your Marines rather than several pics of two or three.

Khrangar - February 1, 2007 06:15 PM (GMT)
I intend to. I was posting pics as I've finished the backpacks and now that I have all the tactical squads done, I'll post a group pic later tonight.

@ztech - February 2, 2007 01:30 AM (GMT)
That looks heavy on infantry.

You seem to lack on the fast attack and heavy support sides. Do you consider getting bikes, tanks and/or land speeders?
I don't know what's your style of play, but infantry is not always a game-winner on its own.

Khrangar - February 2, 2007 03:10 AM (GMT)
If I expand the army, I'll get a devestator squad and maybe some new bikes. I want to wait for the new Master of the Raven Wing to come out before I get anything else though since I'll make a bike commander on the old school hover bike based of the MotRW.

Each different type of armour will have it's own backpack style.

Two more Mk.IV Vets are finshed, all of that type are now done.

Onto the others next. Hope to have all the backpacks done tomorrow.

Khrangar

Khrangar - February 3, 2007 10:51 PM (GMT)
The Mk.Vs are now done. I realize they look a fair bit like CSMs, but that just goes with the armour type I suppose.

Mk.VIs are up next, then on to the Vet Sergeant and the Chaplain. They may take longer since I got an X-BOX 360 today with Oblivion and I have a feeling that it'll eat up much of my time.

Khrangar

Thragka - February 4, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
The Mk.Vs look great. They remind me of Star Wars Stormtroopers - I think that's because of the helmet shape.

Khrangar - February 4, 2007 07:09 PM (GMT)
I've finished the Chaplain's backpack so all I have left is the Vet Apothecary.

That chaplain looks great! The skull-like facial tattoo effect is something I've not seen before. Excellent work.

That apothecary looks great as well- the helmet turned out particularly well.

Lord of Nonsensical Crap - February 5, 2007 02:10 AM (GMT)
Agreed: great paint jobs on the backpacks. Me, I prefer to paint them while they're still on the model, but hey, to each his own.

Really nice plastic Chaplain btw. The same goes for the Apothecary, though IMO, an impressive conversion of a Warsmith and an Emperor's Champion ought to be used for something more impressive than a mere Apothecary (it would make a great Veteran Sgt or Captain)

Khrangar - February 5, 2007 02:37 AM (GMT)
To be fair, he's a Veteran Sergeant Apothecary for my Veteran unit so he's up there in ranks.

Khrangar

Khrangar - February 6, 2007 11:12 PM (GMT)
I've finished basing everything except the captain, who I'll be redoing, and the dreadnought, as I don't know what to do on his base to make it more dynamic. I still need to paint the bases but I thought I'd show a WIP of them.

Here are some pics.

Any suggestions for the dread's base would be appreciated.

Khrangar

Benedictus - February 6, 2007 11:26 PM (GMT)
Traditionally a slate rock or destroyed enemy is placed on a dreadnought base. If it's the latter, it is usually a regular opponent or an enemy from the army background. Given you don't appear to have themed your army to be chaos- ork- or eldar-hunters, I don't think that's the best approach.

What sort of 'scheme' is the rest of the army based on? Standard grass and rocks? Windswept desert sands, or choked urban ruins? A piece of dramatic terrain (slate cliff, sand dune, or shattered gateway for examples) could be great for the Dread to be stomping all over, so long as the 'scheme' for your bases lends itself to something like that.

@ztech - February 7, 2007 01:13 AM (GMT)
What kind of rocks are those?

Sky-blue, blood-red, bright yellow... Rather weird.

As a whole, the army looks great. It looks... united. I like it when all miniatures are painted the same way. Some say it's boring, but I think it's better this way.

Benedictus - February 7, 2007 01:44 AM (GMT)
@ztech's right: the army does look great. Somehow I forgot to mention that in my last post.

Those rocks look like aquarium rocks to me. Explains the myriad colours.

Khrangar - February 7, 2007 03:54 AM (GMT)
They are aquarium rocks, unpainted ones.
