I play Risk and axis and allies too. Which Axis and allies are we talking about. I think the Europe vesion is good. We don't get Japan there but more models and better rules.
napoleon sean - November 29, 2006 02:06 PM (GMT)
I haven't played axis and allies is it good?
KingTut - November 29, 2006 03:41 PM (GMT)
I have the new updated version of the axis and allies game. (the whole world one) there are 5 fractions Japan Germany Britan USA and USSR. They are divided into two teams axis and allies. so you can play with just 2 to a max of 5. While me and my father enjoy the one-on-one games, it is just as fun with 5. I havent played the versions Europe and pacific theater but i am satisfied with my edition. My only problem with the game is it takes FOREVER to play. 20 mins to 1 hour to set up and at least minimum 3 hours of playing time. This one game i played against my father lasted for a week 4 hours a day. But that was an extreme. Most of my games take as long as a good 2000pnt game of warhammer, minus the set up.
Battlefield is wonderful. Me and my dad love the game. It is played with grey and blue (union and confederacy) models that are plastic soldiers about dwarf hight and quite thin. it is played on a board that is arranged into hexes. There are terrain pieces that are flat painted hexes that fit nicely over the regualar plain hexes, they are a bit slidey but it doesnt effect the game that much. The terrain plays a huge role in the game. The terrain can be set up by your imagination or according to the rule book which has at least 10 different battles from the US Civil war. The movement is organized by cards. THe cards allow you to move different units on each of the three sections of the battlefiled (there are dotted lines running through the field) left center and right. That is how movement goes (there are special cards that allow you to do such things as hit and run with cavalry or bombard with artillery but im not going to go into detail on those). Then your units have a preset range with their guns and terrain such as hills increases or decreases this. Line of Sight is a factor in the game. Then depending on how close or far the enemy is you roll dice. The dice are not regular dice but d6s with images of units stuck on to them (stickers ar provided you need to stick them yourself) for example if i fire with my infantry against enemy infantry and they are 2 hexes away and in a wood then i roll 1 die. 4 standard dice- 2 to range penalty and then minus 1 because im firing into a wood. and then i roll that solitary dice. If i roll a infantry figure then i have hit and caused a casulty if i dont roll a infantry i have missed. That is a brief overveiw of a turn. I strongly recommend this game if you are interested in the US civil war.

Personally, I love long and complicated board games that can last a whole afternoon plus the evening, like Warhammer, Risk, Monopoly and such... I never really understood why some people don't like that. Are they in a hurry or what?
When you gather a few friends to play something, it should at least be worth it...
napoleon sean - November 29, 2006 06:29 PM (GMT)
well i don't mind any games, at first my friend told me not to play warhammer but i try'd it, its ok but historical is better i think, no effence :)

a war game that King Tut didnt talk about, becuase it isnt so histroical, it is more futuristic is Risk 2210. This takes risk to a new level, and is quite enjoyable. I'm sure Tut can tell you more.

How about trying Flames of War?
www.battlefront.com
Its a fantastic game, really well balenced and quite cheap to- a German army is usually only around £75.
@ztech - December 28, 2006 05:40 PM (GMT)
Just bought Axis & Allies.
The rules look rather complex and confusing. Not as much as the rules of Warhammer, but at least, in Warhammer, I had someone to teach me as we played. Now I must learn on my own using the manual, and it's much more difficult this way...
Benedictus - December 29, 2006 12:30 AM (GMT)
Napoleon Sean: If you're still around, I recently bought Shieldwall, from Warhammer Historical. It looks good, and I'm strongly considering a Wessex Saxon army. Ergo, perhaps there will be someone around here that plays historical wargames soon.
@ztech - December 29, 2006 03:02 AM (GMT)
I played my first game of Axis & Allies this evening with a friend. As I thought, it's extremely complex and confusing. It took us about an hour just for the set-up, and two hours for the first (and only) turn. But just like all complex board games (like Warhammer, for example), I suppose it gets more interesting when you gain experience.
What I like about it is that it's much more strategically-oriented than Risk.

Axis & Allies is brilliant, and for those of you with a next gen console or a good PC I love CoD 3. Also, on PC Company of Heroes is pure win.
@ztech - October 7, 2007 02:54 PM (GMT)
The problem with A&A, though, is that it focuses on the respect of historical accuracy at the expense of the players' liberty.
I love history, but I don't mind twisting it a bit. Why couldn't General Tojo decide to attack USSR using a huge land-based army instead of Japan's usual aircrafts and ships? Or why couldn't there be a coup in England that would put an ally of Hitler at the head of the country?
Downloaded - October 7, 2007 03:23 PM (GMT)
well you could do that if you wanted to and with enough transports, that is totally possible for Japan. still out of all of the games I mentioned above, CoH is by far the best.
