Title: 2250 pt Tourny Army
Description: comments please!
Limekiller - February 24, 2006 11:18 AM (GMT)
Well, I normally play Chaos, but for an upcoming tournament, I'm thinking of actually borrowing a friend of mine's Lizardmen, and try 'em out. :)
Tournament is a 2-day 5-match tournament, so I'm sure I'll be up against all kinds of foes, and will hit special scenarios. Actually, I know one army that's going to be there is a Tzeentch army with a grand total of 7 models. (Lord on Dragon, 2 shaggoths, 2 heros on chariots, 2 normal chariots.)
Point limit is 2250, and rules are the usual tournament rules, with the exception of no special characters allowed. (not that I ever use 'em anyway)
Here's what I've worked up so far, and is to some extent limited by the models I have available. (only have 6 kroxigors, 3 terradons available. Lots of extra skinks, but no extra normal saurus or temple guard, and the TGs aren't modeled with shields. Can't really use saurus with spears, as he only has 12 painted.)
Slann, 4th Gen, Battle Standard Bearer, Plaque of Tepok, Diadem of Power. 440 pts.
Saurus Scar-Veteran, Spawning of Quetzl, Spawning of Tepok, Light Armor, Great Weapon, Aura of Quetzl, Venom of Firefly Frog. 171 pts.
Skink Priest. L2 Caster. 100 pts.
Skink Priest. L2 Caster. 100 pts.
19 Saurus Warriors, with Standard, Musician & Champion. (ie, 18 + champion). Scar-Vet goes here. 258 pts.
16 Temple Guard, with Musician & Champion. (no standard cause of BSB being in the unit). 293 pts.
10 Skink Skirmishers. Scouts. Javelin & Shield. 70 pts.
10 Skink Skirmishers. Javelin & Shield. 60 pts.
10 Skink Skirmishers. Javelin & Shield. 60 pts.
3 Kroxigors. 174 pts.
3 Kroxigors. 174 pts.
3 Terradons w/ Brave. 115 pts.
1 Stegadon. 235 pts.
Total: 2250 pts.
Note that while he does have a couple Salamanders painted that I could potentially use, he's only got 2 of them. Depending, of course, on the situation (if I go against the Dwarf player with 7 artillery pieces, plans will change, for example), but I plan on playing the army somewhat defensively. anchor one flank with the stegadon, with the TG next to it, and the Saurus block on the other side. The Slann will be, hopefully, the magical artillery, unless I get truly awful luck on spell rolls. Given that I have 5 spells known, I should get a few good ones.
So, Comments? Suggestions on changing the composition and/or magic item selection? Not 100% sure which magic lores to concentrate on, though I'm leaning towards Fire & Heavens, maybe into shadow to try for the magical charge spell, and Dark for the default choice, so as to have several magic missiles available.
Thanks much in advance, guys.

OK, I know it's a bit odd to be responding to myself, but I wanted to update this and actually have the update be noticed, rather than just editing the previous post. heh.
Anyway, after lots of researching (thanks MUCH for the Tactica Chilipepa!) and some discussion with friends, I've revised my original list a fair bit, and an now waffling between 3 different options for which army to take.
The base list is as follows (note that I might change the War Banner for 1 dispel scroll and give it to a Priest):
Slann Mage-Priest, 4th Generation, Battle Standard Bearer, Plaque of Tepok, Diadem of Power, Divine Plaque of Protection & War Banner. 515 pts.
Saurus Scar-Veteran, Sacred Spawning of Sotek, Sacred Spawning of Quetzl, Great Weapon, Light Armor, Shield, Aura of Quetzl, Charm of the Jaguar Warrior (M9). 178 pts.
Skink Priest, Magic Level 2. 100 pts.
Skink Priest, Magic Level 2. 100 pts.
16 Temple Guard, with Shields, Musician & Champion. 309 pts.
19 Saurus Warriors, with Standard, Musician & Champion. 258 pts.
11 Skink Skirmishers, Scouts. 77 pts.
10 Skink Skirmishers. 60 pts.
10 Skink Skirmishers. 60 pts.
3 Kroxigors. 174 pts.
3 Kroxigors. 174 pts.
3 Terradons with Brave. 115 pts.
2 Salamander Hunting Packs. 130 pts.
Total Points: 2250.
That's the generic army that I'm most likely to take, but I'm still waffling over a couple possible variations that I might take instead, that I'd love to also get opinions on.
Variation 1:
Remove: 1 Skink Priest, War Banner, 1 Temple Guard & the Brave upgrade from the Terradons.
Add: 1 Skink to the Scouting unit (making a total of 12 models)
Add: 1 Saurus Hero, with Sacred Spawning of Tepok, Great Weapon, Light Armor and the Gleaming Pendant of Chotek.
I lose some magical hitting power with the Slann, due to 2 less casting dice, but the Temple Guard unit gets a fair bit beefier by replacing one normal guard with the Hero, and the Pendant lets me set up the trap Chili was talking about in the Tactica.
Variation 2:
Remove: 1 Skink Priest
Add: Brave upgrade to the scouting Skink unit (making it 11 strong w/ Champion)
Upgrade: Slann from 4th Generation to 2nd Generation.
This gives me a LOT more magical hitting power, despite the loss of the 2 casting dice. It also gives me access to Drain Magic, and makes the Slann slightly more survivable given that it has 8 wounds instead of 6. However, it makes that 1 model worth 1010 VP (610 + 100 for being a BSB + 100 for being the General + 200 for being 2nd gen Slann), so it's a staggeringly huge point swing.
So, what do you guys think? Base Version? Variation 1? Variation 2? Change it in some other ways? The tourney I'm prepping for is an Indy GT (Quake City Tournament in San Francisco) that's this upcoming weekend, so the quicker the comments the better, and they'd be most definitely appreciated. :)
Thanks much in advance again...

Sorry, not sure why noone's replied yet.
Anyway, your list looks solid, cheap slann, one block of saurus, Jaguar saurus, many skirmishers etc.
I'm not sure if you can have multiple lvl 2 priests though. Maybe I'm thinking of an old ruleset. Double check that and you should be fine :D
Heck, if I'm wrong at least the real lizzie players will come here to correct me. You'll finally get some good feedback.

Hey, thanks for the reply. :)
Just checked the book, no listing of 0-1 by Skink Priests, or any other notation that you only get one, so I think that's solid there.
After hearing from one of the judges that're scoring composition that if I DO go with the 2nd Gen Slann, my Composition score may plunge to negative numbers, methinks I'm going to pass on that option. :D
Still kinda curious on opinions on the base army and the 2 saurus variant, tho. :) May be too late to change anyway, but still really curious. :)

I really think your current list is good. Your second saurus doesn't really seem to achieve that much IMO. You are removing a lot of power (in both magic, and the war banner) for a few more attacks on the temple guard.
The 4th generation slann is easily powerful enough. I never understood why people need anyone more powerful than a 5th gen slann anyway. Like you said, it just seems to cry cheese anyway.
And the restriction on priests, as far as I remember, is on the upgrade to lvl 2. However, it might have been the old Chronicles list that had this restriction.
