Title: Jinxed stuff
Starky - February 10, 2006 11:26 PM (GMT)
Today I played a battle with my Chaos army against Dark Elves. I used five Chosen Knights of Slaanesh, freshly painted, this was the first time I had used them. Here comes the really ridiculous part. A Reaper shot them, inflicted four wounds and I rolled two ones for their saves. Then, in the next turn, two more somehow managed to die from repeater crossbow fire from -Shades-. To top it all off, the Champion managed to be killed by a crewman of a Reaper (though admittedly he did have Chroesh - Word of Pain cast on him).
What I'm trying to say is, are Chosen jinxed? Has anyone else had this problem?
(Maybe this should be in the Off-Topic forum)

We all happen to have extremely bad luck sometimes. One day, when rolling to-hit rolls (with Bretonnian knights, not Chaos knights), I threw five dice... and got five 1's. It would have been even more frustrating if it had been my 2+ armor saves...

Hmm, but that's still only one occasion and not a whole battle, and since it's the first battle for these guys, I'm worried. I suppose I am a bit too supersticious.

Which is why you need to remember (This isnt a personal slant by the way) that it is a game which relies on dice rolls so matter how good or tough your unit is it can die by 1's, plus they are chosen knights which IMO are absolutely pants. If you put soo many points into a unit that are so few then you are in trouble from the start by the fateful ones.
Next time something like that is too happen just laugh and say "Chaos dosent like me today" it makes the game go smother.
I cant tell you the number of times my skaven weapon teams have blown up on first shot so it's not just you. Also it may not be true but i have noticed i remember the bad things in a game more than the good ones so maybe this is true for others- which is why many look back and think Army "X" was bad because it kept failing the saves, ir wasnt it's just a matter of luck.
How much i would ove to attend a tournament and win through luck

Right, *I* myself have had tremendous victories with chosen knights. I was going to say luck, but it does depend on how you use them (sorry if I sound patronising, but to be fair, you did say that you had only played one game with them :D ).
For instance, I *usually* have them in a pack of 6, to make them more of a threat to the enemy. This makes them harder to kill as their is obviously more of them, and also they're bigger so your mate wants to kill them. Even with a lot of bad luck, they are a hell load harder to kill than the rest of your army, so let the enemy concentrate on them, if the rest of the army get unscathed.
Basic tactics are that you *need* to get them in cover at the beginning and in combat by at least the third turn I would say, othrwise they arrive too late in the game to do anything and end up getting shot because they're hanging around. Also, try and minimise bolt thrower angles, so the thrower can't use the 'kebab' technique to a high effect. Characters are useful to be in the unit, or to go next to them for flexibility
Can I ask a few questions Starky? Did you win *the* battle overrall? And how many points was it? These tend to be the main factors for chosen knights
Despite these things, you can be unlucky, and it hurts to loose 95pts (taking the mark into account) in a few bad dice rolls, and I am stunned at the fact that the crewman killed a chosen knight, must have been an unlucky game, but don't let that put you off them.
P.S. Never forget about the chaos horses, hell they're better than *bog* standard troops with S4, and they *really* are the unknown killing machines, they deserve an army book.
In summary, chosen knights aren't that *bad* (tehee ^_^ )

It's actually quite common that the horses (Chaos or not) prove better than their riders.
I find that normal horses have a too good WS and Initiative (after all, 3 is the WS or Initiative of a fully trained Empire soldier, and horses aren't supposed to be trained to fight!), but their Strength is too low (horses are supposed to be much stronger than average men). They should have WS2, I2 and S4. But it's off-topic...
P.S.: Your subliminal messages are cool, omid.

Well, I had them in a unit of five with Musician and Champion. I suppose, looking back, they did perform a useful function (ramble alert...). Right next to them was 16 Bestigor with a Wargor - through the whole battle, the Chosen absorbed fire and the Bestigor were totally unscathed so it was okay, my opponent was really over worried about the Chosen so much of the rest of my army was untouched. That was basically what I had planned and what I usually think when taking something like that. Anyway, yeah, the unit came in at 265 points I think, and it was a 1500 point battle, so it was fine ultimately. It was a draw in the end, my opponent had about 120 VPs more than me, so it was fairly close.
Having said that, I think I lost because I really messed up my deployment and I made a couple of daft mistakes early on.
I know what you mean about Chaos Steeds: if only you could have units of them on their own. Man, that would be cool.
