Title: 800 point Empire,

conglacio - January 7, 2006 06:51 PM (GMT)
I have never fought before, I am going to fight against a Wood Elf, who has been in the hobby for a while

for character reasons, I cannot use mortors, hell blaster volly thingies, or white wolfs.

16 Hand Gunners 133
(1 upgraded to Marksman)
18 Spearmen 151
(1 with standerd, one sargent, 1 drummer, all with a shield)
9 Knights 247
(1 with Standerd, 1 musician, 1 first knight)
1 Great Cannon 100

6 Archers 66
(all upgraded to hunters, with 1 marksman)
1 Captain 74
(mounted, with Great Sword, and full armor)

Magic
Steel Standerd (for knights)
Sword of Fate

1) A unit of 10 knights is very big for 800 points. Id split it up into two units of 5. You have a much higher amount of potential attacks then. Or just take one unit of 5 led by the captain. In smaller battles you dont really have enough points to pay for 5 knights that stand around in the back rank and cant fight.

2) Try to get 20 Spearmen and put them in a 5x4 formation - in this case it is better to have the extra rank, as the spearmen arent very good in causing wounds.

3) The marksman unit is also large, Id prefer to see two units of ten for more flexibility.

so, I need to buy 2 spear men, and 4 gunners!

should both gunner groups have a banner and musician? or is it a waste of points?

Dont give them a banner. If they get into combat they are dead anyway. The banner wont help, but it will give your opponent 100 victory points if he manages to break the unit. A musician is more worth it because if the unit flees it gets +1 to LD when it rallies. But Id only get him if you have the points to spare.

ok, thanks very much

ok, new question...

my army is from a city I made up in Norland, called Nordorf...
My army leader is a the Bergomiester of the city, and is currently listed as a captain, using the mounted model of an elector.....
once I have enough points to use a Lord, I will count him as a Lord....

Will I have to give him the stats of an Elector, or do I need to reduce those stats, because he is not an elector?
I presume that he does not get elector specific items, like a rune fang or a griffen banner for his army. Am I supposed to use them anyway but with a different name?
Does the decree that all counts have to have a halbadier unit apply?

Am I able to give him nifty rules? (the character is, in the fluff I am making up, not 100% sane, and thinks that treemen are communists and so he wants to kill them before they make the forest around his home town revolt. he does not believe that normal trees can't move....so can I give him hatred against treemen?)

eh, what are you talking about? you are not making any sense? you can use the model to represent your general, he doesnt have to be an elector count just because it happens to be the elector count model.

in the case of making own rules? the rules that are stated in the book are playtested and balanced. sure, you can make up your own characters if you like, itīs great fun. but in that case you have to ask your opponents promission (is that the right word for it?). also you should try to give him an appropriate point cost so that he doesnt end up beeing unbalanced.

good luck :)

*Shakes head some*

Communist treemen? That's truly a frightening thought...

Now, when you upgrade the character to a lord, you can "call him" something different. However, he is going to have the statline of an elector count if you decide you want an elector count's statline. For instance, in the dark elf army, I can choose the lord character "Highborn", and call it whatever I want- "slavemaster", "beastlord", whatever, but it's still a highborn when you come down to how the character is played in the game- meaning you would have t ohave the halberdier unit in you army, and you can choose whether or not to give him those items.

On the issue of nifty rules- for a character you can use in any game- no, you may not give him nifty rules. You may, however, create a special character, but will only be able to play him with your opponent's consent.

The beauty of Warhammer is that, while in game terms you are taking a certain model with certain stat lines and abiliities, their history, and their place in the world is entirely up to you. Just becuase it's called an Elector Count doesn't mean he has to be- make up a story for him (which you've done), and make him have some meaning beyond that. However, remember when it's boiled down to game terms- he is that same old elector count.

Sorry if the post is a bit ramble-y, but I think that answers you question.
