I'll say it right away: I don't have the Warhammer rulebook and I always rely on my friends when it comes to the rules. I know how to play, of course, but I'd like to have some details about allied contingents.
I know the rules for allied contingents (I found them on a website about Kislev), but I'd like to know what are the allies of Bretonnia. I want to add some more things to my army, so I'd like to include an unit or two from another army (perhaps the Wood Elves, as they are Bretonnia's main allies and have almost everything Brets don't).
So what contingents are available to Brets?
(I wish Brets were allowed to take mercenaries...)
Put simply, none. There are no official rules for allies in 6th edition (a la 5th). The only thing you can do is either make house rules, or take a kislevite allied contingent (which you can do from the kislev book) and use wood elf models.
You can see a short list of allies for each army in the
Border Patrol pdf (last page, at the bottom).
So the Brets can ally with: Empire, Lizardmen, High Elves, Wood Elves, Dwarfs and Dogs of War.
Although I'm sceptical about a few of those proposed alliances (noteably Lizardmen and Dogs of War  ), if you can find another player with the models willing to participate you can indeed ally with them.
Of course, if your opponent doesnt mind ;)
Think about it, the Noble Bret lord, out to slay some Skaven infestation that has some special artifact stolen form the Bret’s, if they met a lizardman army trying to recover something as well I can see it happening. The Lizardmen aren’t actually evil, just not human in any way, so allies of convenience I could see happening, not often, but I could see it, mainly against evil opponents. We may not like each other, but to save the world we will help each other. Same with DOW, a Bret army sees a DOW army protecting some small village or wagon train with women and children in it, from being attacked by a bunch of Orks or Goblins, I can see them helping, like above, just not a common occurrence.
But since there are not rules for it, I would not have it in my army, now if I were playing 2 armies per side, I could see it working, but not using it as a supplement to my army, that is what DOW is for, and Bret’s can’t take DOW in their army. It doesn’t say that two armies wouldn’t come together to fight an common enemy, and that is how I would use the list. If I were playing you a 2000 pt army I may say sure you can have it split 50/50 between the two, if I was filling nice maybe 75/25, but it wouldn’t be right to just let someone add a unit or two to any force. The only exception I see, is some special scenario rule for one battle or something. But this is just my thoughts on it. :)
