Title: Shall I Go For Vampires?
Banana Man - October 5, 2005 05:45 PM (GMT)
Well. Shall I? I like the sound of them, but everyone says they suck. I wanna start a new army, it's either VC, Dwarves or Skaven. But VC sound really good. Can you tell me the good and bad points of VC, and what to start off with.
Your help's much appreciated, thanks

Lol, I have, but it's a bit confusing as I don't have the army book :P

basically Vampire Counts are an army which is different to many of the other fantasy armies as they cause fear, which is a large help in games, plus they have large units of zombies and skelotens as their men with some support from dire wolves, ghouls and fell bats etc.
i would recomend them as one of my freinds has them and its always a good game when mi Rats fight his Vampire Counts ^_^

well they surely are a horde army so you will have lots and lots of infantry. that is the only way to maximise the use of fear but they are a fun army to play and you can go in many directions :) (bloodlines).
thought about what bloodline you wanna play?

VC have very good magic spells, but they have no ranged units. I play them, and i think their fun to play! I dont say that they are the best, but i think they are more fun to play than dwarves or skaven.

VC require a different game plan to win when compared to other armies. If you try to use them like say, High Elves, or Orcs and Goblins, then you will most likely get a good kicking. If used correctly, however, VC are one of the most competitive armies there is. They certainly don't suck. I've had more success with VC than I have with Bretonnians, Chaos mortal and Dwarves combined.
As for the good points, here's something I wrote a couple of years ago that should answer that. VC have:
| QUOTE |
1. The most reliable troops in the game. We never run away (unless you're a ghoul)! And that can only be a good thing.
2. The best heavy cavalry in the game. Chosen Chaos Knights of Khorne, you say? At 45 pts a model? Well, Black Knights are unbreakable, have killing blow and cause fear for half the cost. Absolute bargain!
3. The best magic lore in the game: NECROMANCY! What other Lore in the games lets you create new troops and heal wounds on your characters, kill things with one blow (even dragons and other big nasties), increase the combat potential of your troops, cast standard 2d6 S4 magic missiles, move your troops with wanton abandon, and cause your opponents prize unit to age horrifically in the blink of an eye? The answer, none of them, only the mighty power of NECROMANCY has such wicked potential!
4. The best characters in the game! As good as a Chaos Lord, for less points and with added benefits like causing fear! Watch as your mighty vampires snack on the elite of the pitiful enemy!
5. FIVE, yes, FIVE different ways to cause terror! Wraiths, Black Coaches, Zombie Dragons, Winged Nightmares and magic items, all make your opponents run away on sight!
6. The best skirmishers in the game. GHOULS have 2 poisoned attacks and T4 for only 8 points a piece! The bane of high toughness critters the world over.
7. Banshees! How many other armies do you have the opportunity to name your units after such celebrity personalities as Britney Spears, or Barbara Strisand? Plus they scare the hell outta the other guy. Plus they give you a shooting phase, and they ignore armour!
8. The best swarms in the game: Bat Swarms, with their huge 10" move (and causing fear!), and spirit hosts, which can't be hurt by the enemy, and will tie their best troops up for years as you heal them continually.
9. FIVE, yes FIVE different bloodlines to choose from, each with unique traits and personalities, and all with vicious bloodline powers with which to humiliate your enemy |
As for bad points, I guess a lack of maneuvarability might be a problem. But that can be remedied quite easily with magic and correct troop selection and deployment.
For starters you'll need a necromancer to be your general at games of less than 2000 pts, and definitley some skellies or zombies. After that, well, there's a lot of directions you could go in. You'll need to get the army book and pick a bloodline before we can say much more.
Cheers,
DLJ

VCs are probably the army in which there is the biggest difference stat-wise between rank-and-files and characters. While zombies have absolutely ridiculous stats, vampires are easily able to match any Chaos champion or lord, and in addition, they can cast spells. They are probably among the best characters in the game.

*holds forehead, not knowing whether to laugh or cry*
Go on, and pick up VC, seriously, and show all your friends just how much they do not suck.
They are in the Top 5. They're even in the Top 3. As you and your friends become more familiar with the game, it will become increasingly obvious.
They suck eh... possibly your friends were telling you the truth, though, Vampires do indeed suck.
Yep. They do.

Just in case there's any confusion, Derfel's tongue was most definitley in his cheek there.
Having just read his comment again, it may have been a pun as well. Vampire's suck. Ha ha ha!
Cheers,
DLJ
