Title: Dryad bits?

Am contemplating what to do next with collecting wood elves. I'd rather get the waywatchers done first but I am wondering about the Dryad plastic box set.

Does it give you the exact amount of bits required to make the dryads (and nothing more) or does it give you enough bits 'left over' for you to use converting other models?

If so, then I'll probably get a box of dryads and then use the spare bits to convert the waywatchers.

If there are spare bits left over, what sort of 'bits' are they?

Loads of spare bits. Don't worry about that.

Basically, you get 12 bodies. They're the legs, torso, and stumps for the arms and head, and a multi-purpose hole in the back. (more about that in a sec)

Now, to complete these bodies, you get something like 15-20 pairs of arms. In other words, way more than you need. It means you can pick and choose each time. Likewise with heads, plenty spare.

Then there's the things that go into the hole in the back. They're what makes the dryads look so busy (in a good way) as you have all sorts of different shaped branches, some full of oddments like skulls, spites etc. (I put a few owls in them ^_^ ). You get plenty of these too, enough to make every dryad have a normal one, and have all the special skull/spite filled branches leftover.

Then there's loads of bits to put on the bases, like mini wystones, roots etc. (check back to the pic I gave you, you should be able to make out bits on the bases despite the cruddy quality, and owls and stuff :D )

So in other word, tons of stuff to convert with. GET THE DAMN BOX ALREADY!!

Lotsa spares, but let me warn you: the dryad box is one of the most frustrating that I have ever assembled.

The arms mostly look just wrong, half the bodies lean too far forward: they constantly fall over while the glue is still drying. The bits are too spindly and I am constantly scared I will break them.

You'll never guess how I felt when I noticed the 'hair pieces' that fit into the back of the heads (this was having already fully assembled half the box: had to manouvre the hair piece around the back branches).

I would say however, the extras are without a doubt the best part of this set: heaps of things to put on bases and other models (that owl has so many tempting uses: on a standard, a hero's shoulder, on a spellcaster).

I actually had some of the most fun I'd ever had assembling the dryads. I did each one in turn (using superglue, so I never had trouble with them falling over - instantly stuck) and really enjoyed picking the parts and posing each one to look individual. And I had 16 of them because the army deal comes with an extra 4.

I do remember sometimes the back branch bit clashed with the hair bit, but for the most part I could shuffle it a bit.

One thing I recommend to anyone building dryads, take your time. I did it in front of two episodes of CSI (new york and miami) which I've just got into, so that was two hours in which I could relax and enjoy building them.

As I've said I also had a ton of fun painting them. Overall, the best plastic set I've ever had the pleasure of completing

lol, I have assembled and undercoated them and feel like ramming my head through them.

I used plastic glue, maybe that's why they kept falling off thier bases (longer drying time). My main annoyance was the arms: I just couldn't get them in any natural poses. The only dryads I really liked were the 'genestealer style': the jumping torsos with short arms.

Most of my dryads looked like they were trying to hug their foes. I think I could forgive the fiddliness of assembling the dryads if I was happy with the final poses, but those arms just look so wrong to me.

Maybe it will all be good when I paint them though.

I did use less of those "hugging yourself" arms, and some I mixed around with other arms. Superglue really is the secret to plastic models.

I did it, have ordered a box of Dryads, they are already paid for and should arrive in the post in the next day or two.
