Title: Game vs. Bretonnians

Lord of Nonsensical Crap - September 19, 2005 09:17 PM (GMT)
Okay, in case a team victory (fought alongside a rather dodgy Chaos ally) doesn't count as a first victory, he's something a little more substantial and more recent.

Last Saturday, I played a 1000 pt game against Brets. Here was my list:

Scar-Veteran Arakor- gw, l-a, shield, Aura of Quetzl, Jaguar Charm, Spawnings of Quetzl and Sotek
10 Skinks- javelins
10 Skinks- javelins
10 Skinks- blowpipes, scouts
19 Saurus- full command, Spawning of Quetzl
4 Kroxigor
3 Terradons

His list (I think):
Paladin- Sword of Might, Virtue of Noble Disdain
Paladin- BSB, Valorous Standard, Virtue of Duty
Damsel- level 1, Chalice of Malfleur (i think)
8 Knights Errant- full command
7 or 8 Knights of the Realm- full command
3 Pegasus Knights- standard

His list was pretty much made to fight a Skaven player he was expecting to arrive. Note that the Damsel did nothing for the whole battle -- I think he forgot she was even there.

TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT
There was almost no terrain- just a small hill on the right side of the board, and I think another small hill on the left of my DZ. He set up all his units on the left side, while I set up my units in the following order from left to right Krox (& Skink screen), Saurus + Scarvet (& Skink screen) & Terradons. The Scouts deployed on the right hill, where they wouldn't really do much.

THE BATTLE

He chose to pray, so I got the first turn, moving my scouts & Terradons to flank his army. One of my Skink screens moved up to provoke a charge from his Errants and general. In his turn, both Knight units charged the Skinks, but they fled and got away. The Pegasus Knights, meanwhile, moved down the right flank.
In my turn again, the Skinks rallied, and the Terradons and Scouts continued to march-block the knights. He responded by moving his KotR up in front of my Krox & Skinks, and charging the Errants into my other Skink screen. The Skinks were promptly butchered, and the Errants pursued right in front of my Saurus. The Pegasi, meanwhile, moved further down the left flank to threaten my Kroxigor.
In my turn, I charged his Errants in the front with my Saurus and in the rear with my Terradons. I also charged my Krox through the Skinks at the Realms, but they were 1" short. The Skinks, however, passed their leadership test and moved to intercept the Pegasus Knights. Their javelins, however, failed to do any damage to the winged kniggets.
In combat, the Paladin challenged my unit champion but failed to bypass his tough armour save. My Saurus, meanwhile, killed a few knights (though Arakor's great weapon was blocked by that damned ward save), and the Terradons killed another. In response, one Terradon was cut from the sky, preventing me from getting a rear bonus. The Errants lost, but held their ground.
In his turn, the Knights of the Realm charged the Kroxigor, while the Pegasi charged the Skinks, who had no choice but to hold. In combat, the Pegasi killed only two Skinks and suffered a wound in return (!!!!!!). Even more astoundingly, the Skinks held their ground (!!!!). The Krox, meanwhile, lost one of their number and crushed two knights in return. They fled and were run down, with the Knights' pursuit taking them off the board.
The Bretonnian general, meanwhile, finally killed the unit champion. The Ara-kor and the Saurus, however, killed enough Errants to break them, though the Bretonnians escaped both the Saurus and the Terradons.
In my turn, the Terradons charged the fleeing Errants, who could not outdistance their charge and were run down along with their general (yaaaay!). The Pegasus knights, meanwhile, killed two Skinks for no loss and broke them, but did not pursue.
In his turn, the KotR arrived back on the board. The Pegasus knights moved further towards the Saurus. In my turn, the Saurus turned to face the KotR, the Skinks rallied, th Scouts stayed put, and the Terradons moved up to assist the Saurus.
Then, in his turn again, he declared his charges. The Knights of the Realm charged the Saurus, and the Pegasus Knights tried to charge between the two Skink units into the Saurus' flank, but fell short. In combat, the Knights only felled two Saurus. Fearing that the BSB had the banner of the Lady, I directed all of my return attacks against him. The Saurus did one wound, and Ara-kor swung his massive sword into his skull to finish him off. The Knights lost, but held their ground.
In the following two turns, the remaining two Terradons flank charged the Knights, while both Skink units opened fire at the close-ranged Pegasus Knights. Sadly, I forgot the close range +1 to hit modifier for the blowpipe SKinks. As a result, the Pegasus Knights came through the storm of blowdarts and javelins unscathed. In combat, meanwhile, the Knights lost a few more of their number to the Saurus and Scar-Veteran (and I think 1 to the Terradons) but continued to stubbornly hold their ground, killing off a few more Saurus here and there all the while.
In the Bretonnian turn, the Pegasus Knights charged the Saurus in the flank and killed 2, while another Terradon but the dust. In return, however, 3 or 4 knights fell in combat. I lost, but both the Saurus and Terradons held their ground.
In my final turn, both my Skink units charged the Pegasus Knights in the rear. It was then that he forfeited the game -- the Skaven player had arrived, and I don't think he felt confident of his chances of defeating me. If the game had gone on, my Skinks may have succeeded in doing 1 or 2 wounds to the Pegasus Knights (given how many I could get into BTB), and my Scar-Veteran would have continued butchering his already-depleted Knights of the Realm.
I'm not sure what the victory points are, but by my estimate (I lost 350 pts, while he lost his Errants, 2 Paladins, a banner and half his KotR), I probably at least scored a minor victory.

LESSONS LEARNED: Sometimes the jaguar charm isn't necessary -- my Scar-Veteran's presence in the Saurus unit allowed them to hold out against repeated Bretonnian assaults, and his nearby presence allowed my army to constantly pass leadership tests.

Special honours, of course, go to the Saurus: in an example of sturdiness worthy of Dwarfs, they took everything the Bretonnians could throw at them and still came out above half strength. With my Scar-Vet at their head, they dealt death to any knights who opposed them (though it helped that they got the charge against those Knights Errant). It's a good thing they never fled, though -- otherwise that would have been 478 points down the drain
