Title: SO... it begins
Description: Burp's Elves
Burp Foulbreath - September 13, 2005 03:42 PM (GMT)
So... it begins.
I lost my wood elf virginity today! Having until now been pure Greenskin today I went and bought the 'Waywatcher Lord' (My Greenskins are fuming!!!)
How different they are to orcs! (yeah, I know, obviously, but) their hands and faces are soooooooooooooooo small! As a character I'm going to put him on a raised base with sculptured details (more tree trunks etc) but other than that I'm going to leave him as he is and not convert him too much. I'm going for varying shades of green/grey. I'm building a winter army but not white with snow effect everywhere; rather just a grey wet cold misty kind of feel... I want them to look maybe a little bit dark, melancholic, serious and ghostly; as if they are there but not there, hiding in the mist (this is the mood I'm after anyway, whether I'll pull it off or not?)
My tree sculpting is going well and my 'Oak of Ages' is nearly finished; reckon I could be selling casts by November; am just shopping around for the cheapest mould material suppliers at the moment. (have also just finished a Black Orc boss, so I aint all elf, not yet....)
I dont know, what with Ulrik the Dwarf King building a Greenskin army, and Burp buying an elf lord and sculpting trees....there must of been something wierd in the beer at Conflict London!!!!
Burp!

That must be it. Apparantly DLJ's started threatening old granny's with an umbrella shaped roughly like a scythe, before making off with their glasses screaming at the top of his lungs "SHOULDA GONE TO SPECSAVERS!!! WOOOHAAAA!!!"

What?

Hey, don't look at me! It's just what I heard!....
But anyway, congrats on the shift to a better army.. er, I mean, to er.. ah hell. Wood Elves rock :D Misty ghost thing sounds good if you can pull it off.
Where's everyone picking these new lords and heroes up from by the way? I havn't seen them at my local GW; I'm not even sure if they've been released yet but hey. It's just I wanna grab a wardancer noble. :(
Treeman - September 13, 2005 07:04 PM (GMT)
There are a few of them at my local store, but I live in the US...so.....my comment was completly irrevelent. sorry.
Xarhain - September 13, 2005 07:38 PM (GMT)
Hey dude don't worry! You wanna talk about irrelevant? Check out the first half of my last post :D
I just checked the UK online store, and the waywatcher lord is out. Along with normal waywatchers, the spellsinger on foot, treekin, drycha, warhawks and the great weapon lord. Cool!

Still waiting to see your Dryads xarhain, thought you were going to pop round and use Goblits camera?
Post some pics soon.
Xarhain - September 14, 2005 04:21 PM (GMT)
I was.. but being back at school I havn't yet. :(
I do have some bad pics from my phone. Thing is, I kinda don't wanna show them in case they create the wrong look. Know what I mean?
But I did say I'd get 'em up soon, and for fear of turning into Cal (as well as being in love with you Burp :P) I'll at least post a group shot to prove I've actually done them, and to give you an idea of how they look. (My phone absolutely gives up on close-ups, distance is the only way for me)
Here's 8 of them. I took this before I finished the other 8, but they're done too. (Come on, you can trust me on that can't you? :D)
Why do people always say "Linky?"I'd prefer if nobody gave any negative criticism just yet. I'll get you guys a proper picture soon, so save your judgement for then. I'd also show my spellsinger, but I really want to wait for a good photo to post. I absolutely love it. ^_^

Thanks for the pic, looking forward to seeing better pics.
Now I have my Waywatcher Lord I have started contemplating on my army. Stage by stage. First stage is to get up to 1500 points (ready for Conflict next year) So, my Lord has to be a Noble. Because he is Waywatcher kindred then that makes my 1 Rare option a unit of Waywatchers (I'll go for max numbers and do a unit of 10) Other than this my only other desire is to have 'Wild Riders' (cant wait to see a giant stag model) as my main Special unit; to paint them looking ethereal with shining eyes, is the challenge that I'm looking forward to. Other than this I havent decided, any suggestions?
Waywatchers arrows at short range have the 'killing blow' effect but I cant find this in the rule book; what does it mean?
I have got hold of a good camera and am in the process of building some 'Burp Foulbreath's Warhammer Pages' to exhibit my greenskins, my elves, and for selling my terrain pieces... Have taken photos of my first tree sculptures, will post them up within the week.

The lethal shot rule is on page 19 of the wood elf book in the top left corner...
it just basically means that waywatcher arrows have the killing blow special rule if your enemy in which you are shooting is under half of your archery range... so for a waywatcher which has 30" range you can killing blow somthing which is within 15" of the unit
Tyrion - September 15, 2005 01:03 PM (GMT)
killing blow is basicly that all 6īs you throw when rolling to wound kills the enemy outright regardless of wounds. off course this can only be used against mansized models. but nice against knights for example since they dont get armour saves :)
Burp Foulbreath - September 15, 2005 01:31 PM (GMT)
Tyrion! that's very nice. I am going to give my Noble the 'Bow of Loren' which means he'll be shooting 3 arrows each shooting phase, at 15" or less all 6's will kill mansized beings no matter what!!!!

That's the sort of thing you want against knights and vampires!
Cool.
...Oh Bum! The 'Lethal Shot' rule doesnt apply if you are using magical bows or arrows. That's a load of pants! Still, a unit of 10 Waywatchers all aiming at a Vampire Count or Mounted General should be able to kill it out-right!... dont need the magic item.
Wilko - September 16, 2005 04:32 AM (GMT)
Why dont you try for a highborn with the bow of loren, and also the arcane bodkins..
thats 4 no armour save arrows ^_^ just as good as a killing blow
Burp Foulbreath - September 16, 2005 12:58 PM (GMT)
That's a nice combo Wilko, but you cant have a Highborn in a 1500pt game... great idea for a 2000pt game though.
Thats awesome though! 4 x killingblows every shooting phase, (from a BS 6, with no movement penalty); You just kill off an enemy character each turn with that one model!
Tyrion - September 16, 2005 03:22 PM (GMT)
yup, you could kill vampires like that yes. but usually they hide in or near units and have some sort of ward saves (those can be used normaly). but whenever I have units with the killing blow ability I try to put as many attacks against an opposing hero or general or something. just might get lucky ^_^

Er what? You're missing the fact they don't cause killing blow. All they do is ignore saves. No KB. It's still good, especially with alter for 5 shots a turn...
Wilko - September 17, 2005 09:24 AM (GMT)
but think about it, you will be wounding on either 4,5, or 6s so in fact it is indeed like a killing blow only a little better. But also you do have to wound a number of times to kill a character
Xarhain - September 17, 2005 10:55 AM (GMT)
Well no. Even against a T4 character (and we were talking about vampire lords a minute ago) you'll be wounding on 5's like you say, which is twice as likely as a killing blow. Which means against a 2 wound hero model it will kill it just as fast as KB, but KB can nail multi wound models (including that toughness 5, 4 wound vamp lord)
Another thing about KB is that you only have to get through one wardsave/regen.
I'm not saying bow of loren/arcane bodkins isn't a fantastic combo, it's just not suited for taking out characters. Waywatchers may be, but all this talk about shooting down characters assumes we can get a shot at them. When was the last vamp lord you saw out of his unit with waywatchers around? I'd prefer to use the unit (with waywatcher chracter) to destroy knights. They'll be nailing 4 or 5 a turn together.
Burp Foulbreath - September 17, 2005 07:20 PM (GMT)
Yep, all the killing blow stuff aside, I think that the Waywatchers are brilliant. That Lethal Shot within a 15" range is brilliant. It's my first chosen unit. For a 1500pt tournie army I am going with a Waywatcher Noble and 10 x Waywatchers (the maximum allowed in 1500pt games. My other characters would be a Spellsinger and a general as part of the Wild Hunt... the rest I havent figured out yet.
Have nearly finished painting my Waywatcher Lord... looking nice, will post pics soon.
