I've been painting quite a lot recently - and enjoying it thoroughly - and I'm just wondering what stage the rest of you guys have got to, and how're you enjoying it?
I was lucky enough to grab an army box, and so far I've managed to convert and paint a spellsinger, assemble and paint all 16 of my dryads (2 units of 8), and get my wardancers ready for painting.
I'm actually a bit sad that I've finished all my drayds. I was having such a fantastic time painting them. All of a sudden they were done and I'm like wow! The good thing is now I get to make another plastic box. On goblits advice (after his experience with the ogre army deal) I promised myself I'd only open each plastic box after fully painting the previous one.
Like I said I've also got my wardancers ready, and I'm not going to assemble my warhawks until I've finished them, so I'll have a maximum of two units going at a time. Plenty enough to have some variety painting (not that I need it with these fantastic new models) but not too much to get overwhelmed with unpainted minis.
I'll get some pictures up when I can, of my dryads and converted spellsinger. Unfortunately I still don't have a camera, just my phone camera which sucks. I'll try and get round to Goblit's house so I can use his sometime.
So yeah, how's yours going? Enjoying it?
I havent started yet but have finished reading the army book and enjoyed all of it. Occured to me earlier and now reading about your Dryads, just how easy a wood elf army could be for complete beginners with no painting experience... or rather, a Forest Spirit army, you dont need Elves just Dryads and their characters and treemen; the entire army could just be drybrushed, no details at all!.. perfect for beginners.
Anyway, my orcs and gobbos are still my priority but my tree sculpting is looking great and I am going to buy my first Wood Elf models in two weeks time when I next visit Bristol and can pop into Games Workshop; will either go for a nice character model, or a Dryad unit.
I would seriously recommend a dryad unit, unless you really fall in love with a particular character.
Dryads are amazingly fun to paint, and quick as you said with the drybrushing (though I highlight too). You get all these little things that are fantastic add ons like mini waystones, little spites, OWLS!! Assembly is easy and fully customiseable (never seen so many options!) None of my drayds even have the same components, let alone the same pose.
I'm sure you'll let us all know, but be sure to actively ensure I know when you get these trees and other scenery pieces ready for sale. I'd love to snap some up from the first lot before they run out.
Assembled a dryad as a branchwraith (or maybe a spellcaster branchwraith) and a Glade Guard as an alter kindred hero.
I've realised this Batallion box may be the last wood elves I get, so will have as much fun as possible with them and take it slow.
