I've played to Warhammer 40K and Fantasy and loved both of them, and now I'd like to start playing Mordheim. I did researches and understood that it's like a battle of characters instead of a battle of units and regiments, a bit like a skirmish, and that there is more terrain, which means more ambushes and such. But the advice I need is about choosing an army.
The background and appearance of an army are what help me take my decision of what to choose, more than the style of play, the cost of miniatures or anything else. And I've spotted three armies that have a cool history and great-looking miniatures. So I need help to spot the strengths and weaknesses of those I think about. Here are my possible choices:
-Witchhunters. I like their background of fanatics who will burn you if you say that you don't believe in Sigmar. In a battle, Flagellants must be devastating in close combat and hounds are not too expensive. However, the lack of missile fire scares me in a war of ambushes and skirmishes.
-Shadow Warriors. I always loved High Elves, but I didn't take them because one of my Warhammer opponents had them and I didn't want to have the same army. Shadow Warriors are cool-looking. In addition, they are great archers, making them suitable in the ruins of Mordheim. They are few in number, though, and since my army list includes only seven models, they will have to take a rout test after only two casualties.
-Kislev. Those hardy men of the north who fight during winter are one of my first choices. I like their history a lot, and their miniatures too. They are cheap point-wise, meaning that they can outnumber their enemies often. Streltsi must be great in defense while a trained bear is surely devastating in offense. However, they lack magic and their leadership is below average.
Any advice for a n00b? Thank you.
The problem with shadow warriors is they have recently been made 'unofficial pending reworking'. They cannot be used in tournaments, as apparently it was decided that elves are unsuitable for Mordheim in their current incarnations.
I think the other two choices are much more interesting anyway.
Kislev's average leadership isn't as bad as you'd think. If you intend on fighting a lot of undead then the Kislev warband has an item that helps immensly...VODKA!!! :D The witch hunters don't lack missile power, well maybe they do but 3 witch hunters with crossbows could solve that. :)
